Have Coldplay lost it?

Featured Replies

^ Contrioversial title I know - it really is a continuation of a post I put up on another thread - but what I really meant to ask is... Does anyone think that Coldplay seem to be putting less and less heart into their music?

I agree that their musicianship has improved, by leaps and bounds at that :D but it seems to have come at a cost - they just seem to be reaching for technical brilliance and in the process have had to let go of what made them so special (at least in my eyes) in the first place - that unique earnestness - best crystalised by Chris singing his heart out :smug: He still does sing his heart out, but somehow all that emotion gets smothered out by all the other things going on in their more recent songs. It used to be that their music complemented his singing, but lately they seem to compete instead, which is such a shame :(

no I like all the new songs.

I think they are great like the old songs...and maybe even better

They haven't lost it, but the new songs are a lot different from the old ones. I really like the old Coldplay (Such A Rush, Only Superstition etc.) and I wish they still made that kind of songs.

I understand the fact that they must avoid repeating themselves though, and that they have to move on..

Totally agree.

Judging by the leaked live tracks and the studio version of the single, the new material is even more souless than AROBTTH. They are much better performers now, but the lack of life and freshness is stunning.

Experimentation is not always equal to progression, sometimes is just a way to overcome the lack of ideas. IMHO they should have go for more variated sources to inspire their music and stop worring so much about getting improved skills on the use of the instrumewnts and the electronic.

Its like they can't get the deal right to get to the basics naturally. Alas, the key songs starts to fade like a pale reflection of the previous ones.

Sometimes, somehow, over the last 3 years, i got the annoying feeling that they are pretending to be something, just for the sake of being a "worldwide phenomenon" but with the likes of their hearts not being in it.

My hope is not lost yet, since a band that made such a big album as Parachutes should be back sometime, but not yet according to the signals on X&Y. Fingers crossed on the unleaked tracks, thou.

you're wrong

this album will be the greatest

you can't judge an album just by it's single

you have to hear the whole thing

i've heard the single and 5 tracks more. Half of the album. Maybe not enough to make a judgement but i'm not judging it yet.

If you read carefully my post, i emphasize that my opinion is bases in a feeling about the progression from the last album to the known songs. I got no opinion in X&Y 'cause i can't -i haven't listen to it. (I suppose you have, since you have made your opinion perfectly clear yet 'this album will be the greatest').

All i know is that i dont like where coldplay is going, and better i don't like where they are not going. I'm not saying they are going to flop, just i agree they seems like they have totally lost it.

No, they haven't

After a few hundred listens!!

After listening to SOS a few hundred times i feel Chris Martin is trying to hard with regards to the lyrics, With 'clocks' the lyrics weren't that brill HOWEVER the music was awesome the amount of times i closed my eyes and just let it take me! That said you cant judge X & Y on one single so I eagerly anticipate the album. Dont disappoint me coldplay!!!!!

all right... you're really scaring me.. who are you.. and what have you done with the old Albie!! :laugh3:

good point btw... i shall wait to hear the entire album before I can sy they have lost it.. but from the sound of this one single.. its sounds classic.. ;)

yeah, you're crazy, i love every new song they have

not at all..if anything, there hearts are in it more than ever....they said they want to make the third album the best thing anyone has ever heard and so far so good...they dont do it for the money or the fame, they do it for the love of it

i don't agree with you AT ALL. in clocks, there was so much going on, and chris was singing so hard, i beleived and fealt every word he sang, and inother robtth songs, like scientist, amsterdam, blah blah blah. i just think you are dwelling on the fact that they haven't wrote another yellow, which i think does not matter a bit. they've done that, now look at all the gorgeous songs they have done.

Erm, no. If anything, this thread should be made after the album is out so everyone can have a proper opinion. One single and 5 badly recorded live tracks doesn't solve a thing.

Speed of Sound is great, it's on par with God Put a Smile on Your Face in my book. Judging by the first experience I had listening to AROBTTH, there will be tracks that are nothing like SOS and many of the tracks that don't become singles are sometimes the best.

It's too early to judge. I'll wait until June 7th.

do people really believe AROBTTH was lacking in emotional connection? i refer to the soul's post, there...see, that i find surprising: warning sign, politik, the scientist and (especially) amsterdam were, i thought, emotionally accessible songs. i can understand that people might have been a little put off by the more mysterious lyrics behind the songs as opposed to the open simplicity of parachutes, but i always thought it was about what the imagery of the lyrics conjured up in one's mind mixed with the right reflection of music that made those songs for me...

regardless: i won't judge an album on one song. was in my place really that representative of the whole of AROBTTH? things are going to progress, they have to and if their new style is really as alienating to older fans as some expect it to be, then that is that, really. they'll access a different audience who do connect. look at radiohead, i mean, it's not about creep anymore, is it?

I dont think they have lost it. Sos is a great single, and like chris said its a good way to bridge the gap from the previous album. If you look at how long and hard they have worked on the new album and how much they pushed themselves to make the best possible music they could then you will be amazed. And hopefully it will be shown when the album finally comes out.

They will have a hard task to follow a rush of blood but i think they will do it. they still have the same class they did back in the days of yellow. oh and they rock!

the old Albie is gone :smug:

What a heart?? if they just do everything for money, as every artist/band in the media.

See my signature btw.

how can you say they do everything for money? after all the charity things they have done especially make trade fair

So what? I haven't say they're bad people

Today's music is just business, a simple way to make a lot of money, and Coldplay is not the exception. I just feel quite sad how they're getting rich through us, yuck
