Have Coldplay lost it?

Featured Replies

In my opinion coldplay are the exception, they may be making money through record sales, but im willing to pay thousands more to pay for the amazing music they make. They are putting money back into the places where its needed like africa, they are making peoples lives better with their music.

So what? I haven't say they're bad people

Today's music is just business, a simple way to make a lot of money, and Coldplay is not the exception. I just feel quite sad how they're getting rich through us, yuck

Have you been living under a hole or something? Doesn't everyone gain money through everyone else? Do you not know the concept of "Working"? I'm sorry if I sound sarcastic, but I have no idea where you're getting at. Every single person gets money through someone else, somehow!

Have to disagree. Yeah according to you are the same same the poor mother who works so hard to keep the miserable existence of her family and the famous and very rich actor, model who actually doesn't do anything.

Well Coldplay sing beautiful songs... but

but....?

It's simple really. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it. No one is putting a gun to your head. They were once your average middle class people too. By the way, anyone who works in the music industry will tell you - It's not quite so simple, my friend. And if Coldplay wanted to get richer through us, they would've dropped the album in december like planned, made an official album with all the b-sides and appeared in commercials selling ipods. Not so much the case.

So to fully understand you, what your saying is...their music isn't as good now because their rich? Because you're completely missing the point if that's what you mean.

lol, obviously some artists can get into their songs and express what they feel witn them, bla, bla... yeah I know Coldplay is not the type of band that would get out a wrecked and repetitive song. Please don't misunderstand me, I'm not against Coldplay I'm just against people who make idols out of them. Just that.

I think they're normal people who had luck and now can get rich and so famous just expressing themselves and looking good. I wish I could do that (instead working at the coal mine :P ), and guess everyone (including you).

That's what I meant with easy

^ Contrioversial title I know - it really is a continuation of a post I put up on another thread - but what I really meant to ask is... Does anyone think that Coldplay seem to be putting less and less heart into their music?

I agree that their musicianship has improved, by leaps and bounds at that :D but it seems to have come at a cost - they just seem to be reaching for technical brilliance and in the process have had to let go of what made them so special (at least in my eyes) in the first place - that unique earnestness - best crystalised by Chris singing his heart out :smug: He still does sing his heart out, but somehow all that emotion gets smothered out by all the other things going on in their more recent songs. It used to be that their music complemented his singing, but lately they seem to compete instead, which is such a shame :(

i don't agree with you AT ALL. in clocks, there was so much going on, and chris was singing so hard, i beleived and fealt every word he sang, and inother robtth songs, like scientist, amsterdam, blah blah blah. i just think you are dwelling on the fact that they haven't wrote another yellow, which i think does not matter a bit. they've done that, now look at all the gorgeous songs they have done.

I don't much like Yellow by the way, never did :P

Yellow is exactly the type of song I was referring to at the beginning of the thread (possibly my least fav from Parachutes)... The same goes for Politik (controversial again, I know - it's just how I feel about the song  ), A Whisper, and less so for some other songs from AROBTTH. Brilliant musically, but somehow lacking soul, although I have to concede that if you listen closely enough, it eventually does get to you. Anyone notice how AROBTTH has less emotionally accessible songs (i.e. the album has less immediate impact) than earlier stuff???

This thread actually isn't meant to be a judgement on X&Y... I was just commenting on a general observation that of late, they seem to be putting too much emphasis on production and maybe, just maybe losing sight of what made them successful the way they are now :( ... I mean I don't think anyone can dispute that the thing that made CP stand heads and shoulders above many other bands and get taken-noticed of was the emotional quality of their music (that their music skills is of high standard as well doesn't need mentioning, I consider it a prerequisite for any band worth my time :D )

Sure, I can accept they'll change, but I wonder whether they are heading in the right direction in terms of their strenths? Maybe they are still experimenting and expanding their skills and this may yet be a passing phase... And somehow one day they will manage to combine everything into the most awesomest, amazing album eva! *drumroll* :drummer:

I guess I'll have to keep the faith like any good fan (seeing they do put in 100% and maybe more in all their work), and follow them wherever they take me. And of course it can't be denied that the quality of their playing is impeccable... all their tones and textures are just perfect (thank goodness they still believe in that :smug: )!

And I guess there is hope yet :P... Jon & Will seem to be taking over more emotional burden in the songs from Chris (who seems to have plateaued in this department *sniff* *sniff* --> burn-out perhaps? :o ), so there is still loads to look forward from the band! Can't wait for the whole album to come out :)

heh, when he sings that last part in politik, "oh give me love over....." gotta be one of my favorite parts on the whole CD, not so much the rest of the song, but that part. anyways, as far as lyrics and music and soul are concerned, Chris Martin was in love with a child while writing this album (X&Y), maybe that might influence in a postive/negative way?

Agree with you there... Check out my siggy :D. I almost died when I first heard that line

As far as Apple's concerned, maybe he's a bit distracted (i.e. part of his heart's shared between the music and his family - not blaming him, it's only natural since he's a dad now)?

refer you back to my post of page 2...:P

this is what i don't get about people viewing AROBTTH: the songs are emotionally accessible if you will, perhaps not so much open as parachutes stuff, but surely this indicates a growing level of sophistication in songwriting? plus, it depends what you mean by emotionally accessible. do you mean songs that touch a chord with you straight away, or songs that make the emotions they talk about clear? tis 2 very different things. the former makes you connect in a way and the latter just blatantly states any emotion without touching you in anyway (natasha bedingfield's "these words" springs to mind :D).

i'm glad the 2 albums are very different in certain ways: it's interesting to watch a band you like change and progress and try to challenge you a little more...experimentation is an odd thing. radiohead were criticised for losing some of their old fans who just couldn't get into kid a, but they managed to find a new audience...trying to think of other long-lasting bands...red hot chili peppers, for example: about 10 albums and not all the fans who adored them at the start would feel quite the same about their most recent material...

i thought politik was beautiful. just. i think all coldplay songs are perfectly controlled, and i think the arobtth songs were just amazing, theyjust grabbed you, engulfed you and wudn't le go. the songs were just dazzling, heart wrenching, haunting, blah blah blah. i think wot u sed about the music and chris' singing competing is untrue. i hink its done so well that they kind of mske a whole, rather than two parts.

I just read an article on yahoo news how Chris said it was the worse experience he ever went through. They are under a lot of pressure to release a "winning album" because their record company is not doing so well. So they count on the coldplay album to sell at list as much as the last one (10 millions)... that's a lot of pressure for coldplay, and they are not very happy about the responsability they been targeted with!

they are under TOO much pressure with the new album, and it sucks. I think it will sell like hotcakes but the band shouldnt have to go through all that pain and trouble of having to meet targets set by the record company

im guessing everyone wishes they could be coldplay, but the fact is no one can. Coldplays unique brilliance is what makes them so damn good, and if they can get rich whilst churning out great songs that frankly make me a hell of a lot happier when i hear them then good luck to them, and i look forward to helping them increase their wealth when the new album comes out

hmm, the opening lines of the nme interview were from chris about the record company people getting ticked they were playing a bit of speed of sound for the mtv ads...:

"I don't care what the record company thinks! We decide what to play, we decide when we play it and we decide who we play it to! Tell them we fucking said so!"

:P

Coldplays unique brilliance is what makes them so damn good

mmm, see the "snippet" thread :D

That album go depth in spaces that the first 2 albums didn't explored.

It's 3.00 AM here and the 6 new songs are playing perfectly well in the dark mood of the night, something unthinkable before with Coldplay.

Except for the Speed of Sound and Talk (I'm pretty sure Talk will be another single) the other songs are so deeply dark and melanconic and I'm pretty sure this album will be great (of course, maybe not so easy listening as the first 2) but when it will reach your soul, it will be the most devastating Coldplay album ever.

At this point I hope that the final mastering of the album wouldn't be so bright and clear but I hope it will keep a bit of this dark melancony mood as we can hear on the live versions of the new songs.

Bloody hell, some people are impossible to please!

"Speed of Sound" absolutely blew me away, to me it's their best song ever not including "Clocks" ... and it's only the first single. "Talk" is a cracker too, and I haven't even heard the proper finished version yet. The best active band in the world today produces what is almost undoubtedly going to be one of the best albums ever, and everyon'es worried their losing their emotion? Actually many people criticize Coldplay for being soppy and over-emotional. Most mainstream music is tragically lacking in emotion anyway. The fact is that Coldplay simply make great music and always will. I have faith in Coldplay and so far they have never disappointed me. I nearly cried when I heard Talk and SOS — in my opinion they surpass almost everything the band has done before and their only a taste of what is to come (that is, over an hour of the greatest music ever).

I think listening to the album through for the first time will be one of the best feelings I've ever had. I can't wait, hang in there and I promise you won't be disappointed! :)

now that is intriguing; as mentioned before, i'm actually rather pleased that the music is changing. i mean, you can maintain a certain style, with little change, whilst still being successdul (greenday springs to mind), but i like bands to adapt and progress. this darker side people are talking about, that i'm warming to :)

Alright, alright... Looks like this thread has stirred up quite a bit of controversy :argue:

Of course, what'd I expect? It is a Coldplay fansite after all... :P

Just heard Talk... The leaked version of course!

All I wanna say is... I take ALL that I said before (about CP losing it) back. Clearly they have not lost it... Unfortunately poor fecking souls like me wouldn't be able to tell coz it took me like three friggin' months after the fact before I managed to get Talk (thanks Steve :D)... Guess that makes me a loser :( :smash:

Yes, I agree now, fully, with what almost everyone's said... this album is gonna be f*cking mega and we'll all be blown away. I'd buy any album that had 2 songs as great as Talk (and this ain't even the finished released version yet :) ) But I still stand by what I've said about SOS- Will Coldplay stop giving me heart-attacks? :dead: I was scared shitless by SOS (good song as it is - are they trying to punish us for circulating Talk before the album's release?) :o

Anyone who's not convinced yet that Coldplay have arrived (in all manner of great bands e.g. U2), I promise you Talk will totally change your mind... If you need Talk PM me and I'll e-mail it to you...

Coldplay rule :guitarist:

you dont need to listen to talk to realize that coldplay havent lost it..listen to speed of sound!! are you kidding that isnt enough proof that coldplay are back and better then ever?

i liked speed of sound. i can't w8 4 my crap computer to hurry up and download it!

no way.

I don't care if they lose it or not, Frankly if everyone loves them so much then they shouldn't really care

Either way, It won't be as big as OK computer
