Gnome, gnome on the range

A look at the popularity of garden gnomes.

Dorothy Dick near Wakefield has had her gnome Norman for about 30 years.

She found him discarded at the rubbish dump, all muddy and chipped. "He looked so sad and lonely and his fishing rod was bent and twisted. He had a sort of wistful look in the only eye he had left," she says.

But after a complete makeover and repaint, he became a much-loved friend of her grandchildren. While they have long since grown up, Norman remains a family favourite and keeper of precious memories of when the children were young.

These days he stands by the fish pond, rod in hand and keeps watch over the water.

"And if you look carefully, he'll wink at you," says Dorothy.

In a few weeks you might notice scores of weekend visitors rushing about Charlottesville with quizzical expressions on their faces.

They may be holding sheets of paper that look like something Captain Hook might have drawn. Don’t worry, the people poring over the flame-singed treasure maps aren’t latter-day pirates looking for a buried chest filled with gold doubloons.

These searchers will be seeking gold, all right, but not the precious ore. No, these folks are interested in gold sprayed from a can.

Actually, they’re interested in a statue of a gnome that happened to be the target of the aerosol-propelled paint. You know, those hardened-clay fellows people put in their yards and gardens to liven things up.

This particular gnome stands about 2½ feet high and is the grand prize in what is hoped will be an annual event in Central Virginia. On June 25-26 as many as 100 contestants will participate in the first “Great Virginia Race: Quest for the Golden Gnome.”

The customized treasure hunt will lead participants from Richmond to Lexington and ultimately to Charlottesville in search of the glittering piece of yard pottery.
