great to have them back to their old name.

Pacifier Are Shihad Again

By Paul Cashmere

18 September 2004

Pacifier is no more. Shihad is back. Jon Toogood, Tom Larkin, Karl Kippenberger and Phil Knight have announced that they have reverted back to their band's original name.

Shihad became Pacifier after their American label refused to release their album as Shihad after 911 because they claimed it sounded too much like Jihad.

Although Shihad had been Shihad for more than a decade before that, they reluctantly changed the brand name that they had established over the years with the hope of cracking the American market.

It wasn't to be. Not only did they change their name but then the label who insisted they change it refused to release their record anyway. The album came out though a P&D deal with Arista.

In a statement at their website, Shihad say "The events surrounding the name change and our choice to be known as Pacifier are well documented. As much as we believed in what we were doing, and the reasons for doing it at the time - the truth is we were wrong.

We have always been lucky to have such a strong group of supporters who have stood up and stuck with the band through some very turbulent and emotional times. We are particularly grateful to those that embraced us during the Pacifier years, and we look forward to seeing you all when we return in November."

On Monday (September 20), Shihad head to Vancouver to start work on their sixth album. They have been rehearsing the songs for the record over the last 12 months in Melbourne, Wellington and at a remote location on the North Island of New Zealand.

Aussie Rolf Harris has led a group of more than 100 artists to recreate a giant canvas of a famous portrait of King Henry VIII in London's Trafalgar Square. Most involved were keen amateurs who painted panels, which were then assembled. Rolf on Art:The Big Event was broadcast live on Britain's BBC One. the picture is based on a potrait by Bavarian painter Hans Holbein the Younger. "It's a great oppurtunity for people to try out their artistic flair," Harris said.

I'm familiar with that - he has his own "art" show on the BBC at the moment. I don't watch it, though! :P

The panics

  • Author

While everyone else is crunching "new rock" or nervy "post-post-punk", two Australian bands drop anchor in mellower waters.

THE PANICS

Sleeps Like a Curse (LittleBigMan/MGM)

*** 1/2

While everyone else is either ploughing the crunching "new rock" or nervy "post-post-punk", these two Australian groups return with their minds on calmer pursuits that don't need inverted commas around them.

For the Panics from Perth, this means an album that comes with its own heat haze. Sleeps Like a Curse feels like early evening in summer when you can still feel the warmth coming off the ground as you lie on the couch on the veranda. Jae Laffer's vocals have both a hint of huskiness and shot of drawl, coming across like gentle cycle spin-off of Machine Translations' J Walker, the Go-Betweens' Grant McLennan and the Church's Steve Kilbey.

Musically, that's pretty much where the Panics fit in, too: country and whispers of psychedelia laid over the kind of melodies you could pour from a jug.

Twin Sisters and One Too Many Itches are simply gorgeous. Sleeps Like a Curse and Speak It should accompany classic surf footage. Minor A shades the day with sadness
