I got a guitar today. Fender acoustic. It's very nice :D Got sore fingers already.

Guys I have a questions tho. Those riffs you mentioned. What strings do you hold down? and which ones do you strum? :/

if you look at u2phan's little speed of sound riff look at the first zero, that means that you play the 'e' string (the thinnest one) without any fingers held down. Then with the 3 you put your finger in the 3rd fret (frets are the spaces between the lines on the neck of the guitar) on the 'b' (second thinnest string) and so on. Hope this helps.

I can play it! ISH! having a little bother getting to the D string :/ ANd my fingers hurt a wee bit!

THANKS for the help!!!! :D

any more riffs? (in easy format! )

realy easy song that every guitar player knows

SMOKE ON THE WATER - DEEP PURPLE

any string:

0---3---5-----0---3---65----0---3---5---3---0

cool, thanks! :D

Im so excited' date=' just looking on ebay now....pink electric [/quote']

pink...pink like this? and with a little bit of this?

great. that will be great..*dreams*

:stunned: Similar to Jonny's - niiiiice!!! Hehe yep im sad' date=' i love pink, so i think it would be pretty cool to have a pink guitar :D ! Im off now, but cheers for all the info. I'll let you know when i've (eventually, im so broke) got one! :) x[/quote']

Cheers to pink guitars. I'm probably gonna buy one too. Nothing to be ashamed of even if i'm a guy. John Mayer has a pink stratocaster. However, my guitar's gonna be a "bergundy mist" strat. Look it up guys, sweet sweet color

best of luck to learning guitar, I taught myself using the Internet and books over the last year, and I am quite proficient by now on my acoustic. Coldplay's an alright band to learn songs, guitar is pretty simple compared to other bands. Get into the Beatles too, they have a lot of easy (and hard) songs as well. My tip to you is, if you want to be good at guitar, all you have to do is practice, practice, practice. The first few months are the hardest, but you don't have the will to play, then you'll never be good. My main motivation is U2, and my desire to play "Where the Streets Have No Name" on a Fender Strat helps me practice a lot so I can eventually ask my parents for an electric...anyways GOOD LUCK

i agree. Coldplay's guitar work is pretty simple. so they'd be a good band if you are just starting out. The Beatles are another good band with easy songs to learn (and some harder, yes... so there is your challenge!). :) i think the first song i learned to play on guitar is "Day Tripper".

i learned "where the streets have no name" but i need to practice it more. i haven't gotten it down perfectly... but that's cuz i haven't played it in awhile.

Cool. I did not know Squier did thinlines.

i tought myself how to play guitar and two of my friends all you need to do is learn how to read tabs and chords... their written very simply... for example... (e is the thinest string, on the bottom) this is from "speed of sound"

e-0-------0------0---

B---3------3------3--

G-----2-2----0-0-----

D--------------------4

A----------------------

E----------------------

the numbers tell you which fret to put your fingers, 0 means open note (just the string)

you should go to a site like http://www.mxtabs.net and you can learn the gutiar quite easily

Only 23 days til i get my guitar! Woooot! Its around this shade pink with a white scratchboard. Im so excited! Got AROBTTH tab book - cant wait to start learning!!!! :) Thanks everyone for your posts on this thread, it's been very helpful reading them all!

I know, apparently I am blind and stupid. :)

As to easy songs to learn, two of the first three songs I learned on guitar were Coldplay songs, in The Scientist and In My Place. For The Scientist you have to have a capo, but for in my place, you should be able to play it no problem.

--12------12-------------9---------9---------

---------------------12--------12--------(3x)

-------9-------9------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

then on the last time, you'll play

--12------12----8/9--------9------9---------

-------------------------12-----12------10---

-------9---------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

that '8/9' part means you'll slide the note from a C to a C#, meaning you'll slide your finger from the 8th fret to the 9th fret without picking the note a second time. It's fairly easy on an electric guitar.

Oh, and that smoke on the water riff is wrong. It's not played on one string. You can play it two different ways, but that isn't one of them

If you want to play it full chords, you take an F fingering, then play it in this context

F G# Bb F G# B Bb F G# Bb G# F

Or the other way goes

-------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------

--0---3---5---0---3---6/5---0---3--5--3--0--

:) great song to play. first song my dad learned too.

This is how it can be played, if you want to look for easy songs. You can also play it without the hammer on and changing the note from an F# to a G on the E string, but this is how I prefer for the opening riff.

-------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------

-----------------2--0-----4-----0h2------------

--------------2--------2-----2------------------

----0---2h4-------------------------------------

Quite simple but really good song to play. You move it down a string later in the song, and you can work out the rythm portion on your own.

Another great song every guitarist knows is Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream. This is the intro to it, instantly recognizable and a good song to work with. You play this twice, the first time playing the D note in parenthesis and the second time you don't.

isaac, thanks very much for all that info!!!

Dumb question here...but whats a 'capo'? :/

Hehe Steph i just saw this thread since im buying an acoustic guitar on sunday and gotta say WOW wt a cool adventure u had :P

Anyways, would it really matter if i get an electric guitar or and acoustic 1 to play most of Coldplay songs? since thats the reason im gettin me one :D

A Capo is a little device that goes over a fret and I think (not very musical me) that it changes the tone or pitch...something like that. It depresses the strings and makes a different sound...put it that way. So to play Moses, you put this thing on the second fret and then count 1st, 2nd, 3rd fret etc from the capo.

^Aaah i see! :) Cool! I've seen them a few times but had no idea what the heck they were! Ta very much for the info Ted!

I recommend an acoustic to start with. It's easier to pick up and play, don't have to worry about messing with distortion or reverb or any of that. Also, as most players start off with chords and rythm, that's easier to get a grasp of on acoustic.

You might hear different things from different people, though. As to actually fingering chords, electric would probably be easier. Coldplay songs are generally played on electric, but sound fine on acoustic, because they're typically done with little to no effects.

By the way - something that will help you a LOT as a guitarist will be taking time and learning musical theory. That will help you more than you know.
