my thoughts on the grammys

Featured Replies

Ive tried to find the positive reason why coldplay didn't win a grammy and i think i have a good idea why. the very fact that they were beat out by U2 shows the fact that U2 is still the reigning super power within the music world and it shows how much farther Coldplay still has to go to reach their pinnacle and although they are in my opinion the greatest and most brilliant band on earth they still have a lot of growth to do in order to overthrow U2 as the world-wide acclaimed best band in the world. By not winning a grammy i think that Coldplay will put extra effort and brilliance into their next album and will therefore perhaps create their best effort yet.

They already got song of the year in 2003 for Clocks, if they wouldnt have gotten that it would have been a robbery. And lets not lie to ourselves X&Y is not as good as AROBTTH, so im not too angry.

Naturally I really wanted to see Colplay get it, that would have been awesome and it would have made my day. But I do think U2 deserved it. :)

U2 did deserve it, Every single of their current album is a hit...

No, they didn't. There are absolutely tons of bands who have done far better albums....in truth...the grammys short lists are terrible....I really think award shows are pretty pompous affairs overall and having U2 win is probably about right...there last album wasn't even that good...come on....I don't mind people who like it but really believe it to be pretty shit. I like U2 but I liked them when they used to write rock songs that actually sounded like they meant it. New Year's Day, The Unforgettable Fire, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Where The Streets Have No Name, Pride (In The Name Of Love) are all songs that U2 need and if they didn't have those songs to play live then they really wouldn't still have the older fans, well, they would have some=those who really are blind to see anything bad that they do because they have become so obsessed. They didn't deseve it, Coldplay really should have got at least say 1 award and there should have been a focus on much better music rather than the size of the bands fanbase who will all gladly tune in on TV to watch them....typical.

The U2 special treatment makes me sick.

I disagree. I admit, I havent been a U2 fan for very long, but over the past couple of years, they have become one of my favorite bands. I now have all their cds, and I like each of them in their own way. I guess not being old enough to appreciate U2 until a couple years ago, I wasnt really aware when the whole Joshua Tree/Achtung baby craze happened in the late 80's early 90's. I was only a couple years old. With that said though, I still enjoy all their cds, and I do believe that they had the better album here. X&Y is very, very good IMO, but I agree with others, that it is not as good as A rush of blood to the head. U2's "new" cd I really enjoyed. I listened to it pretty much nonstop for a couple months. Its got some really, really good songs on it. Although I'm a bigger coldplay fan, I hate to say that U2 deserved what they got.

theres a lot of good songs, but every song is not a hit..

Well I wasn't really trying to say it was U2's against Coldplay's.... :/ BUT.. the fact that it's so obvious that these albums would get nominated at such overly hyped and pretentious awards just because the bands are the biggest....whatever type of drab U2 want to put out...if they tour it enough and put on huge shows that are filmed and attract alot of attention - they are always going to get nominated for such awards and probably win.....and it isn't a great album, it just isn't.....people can like it but it's not great. Great albums are remembered and referenced as fantastic moments for years to come (and not just by idiots)...and I can say without doubt that the last U2 album rates pretty low. I think Coldplay made a pretty good album and I really love alot of the songs but it could have been "great" if they had chose to go start with "square one" and make the album rise even futher from there...oh and not had Twisted Logic, What If and maybe even X&Y & Fix You as album tracks this time....I think the style of tracks like Sqaure One, White Shadows, Low, Talk (perhaps leak version) are really what the album should have been like this time. (I probably am gonna get slated for that last bit, but fuck it)...Coldplay always have the sense about them that they can go on to do even better things though. Other bands apart from U2 really should have been recognised...and giving all the awards to U2 means nothing really, except to give them more album sales to idoits who see the "Winner of Grammy 2006" stickers on their CD's and other products... :snore:

Nice to hear from you Gareth... ;)

 yes :D , shame that it was when I was giving a well deserved rant :smug:

u2 deserved it for sure, sad coldplay's run of album grammys comes to an end. And personally x&y is my favourite album of all, i mean hey it was nominated and very likely came second to u2! thats pretty damn good.

u2 deserved it for sure

No......they didn't.

And I'm not nessessarly saying coldplay deserved to get them all either.

I think Coldplay should've been nominated for at least 6 awards ("Speed of Sound" for Record of the Year or Song of The Year), but you can't change the past. I still love Coldplay forever.

My 2yr old little sister spilled mango juice all over my U2 CD the day I bought it. I listened to the entire album in the parking lot right after I bought it. I can tell you that I didn't break it in half and toss it because of the mango juice.. I broke it in half and tossed it because..

1) I couldn't believe I payed for that bullshit.

2) I actually tried to like every single track.

Mango juice just sealed the deal for me. Either way.. I'll say it again. That album is bullshit. I've enjoyed every other album fine. But good god.. b-u-l-l-s-h-i-t.

and the grammy goes to.. U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bullshit Bomb.

I WANT MY MONEY BACK.

They just gave it to them because the Grammys are predictable. They always give adwards to the perennial favorites despite all the amazing stuff out there. I don't necessarily think Coldplay should have won, but U2 definitely shouldn't have.

I just wish that they wouldn't ignore lesser known bands. I mean, Death Cab were there and did anyone even see them? At all??

This argument is slightly pointless for two reasons. A) When have the grammys ever given awards to those who actually deserve it? I love the grammys and I think that they are a big symbol of popular music but at the same time its all political and incredibly predictable. B) I don't think anyone on this board thinks that either of U2's or Coldplay's latest albums are the best of thier careers. Therefore neither of them honestly deserved it but U2 deserves it over Coldplay because they have proved themselves to be a more prominent rock band. You can say all you want of how Coldplay is the greatest rock band in the world but they haven't exactly stood the test of time just yet, maybe in twenty years it will be different.

It's really bothersome that some people think that because you have "stood the test of time" you should get awards over a younger band, despite your latest album being nothing of excellence. Really dislike this type of thinking.

Yes, I know - I'm with you on that one.....I can't believe people actually use that in arguments. It's like when elderly people use the "You should listen to me, I've been here alot longer than you". Then even when you explain to them why they are wrong, they say "Don't talk back and respect your elders".

Well, I'm here to slate you! Just kidding, but imo these are the types of songs that set Coldplay apart from everyone else...their "ballads", and this is why we love them so. Take that away, and you don't have a musically diverse and multi-faceted group of artists.

I could have done without Hardest Part, but other than that X&Y is very balanced and has an aestetically pleasing sound, having emotional highs and lows which make all great albums. You take off the ballads, you change the dynamics of the album as a whole, and that changes everything. What would The Joshua Tree be without "With or Without You", or OK Computer be without "Lucky"?

One other comment, in that like the American Music Awards, the Grammy's are more of a popularity contest than anything else. Rarely do one year's winners win the next year they are nominated as well. I never put much stake in award shows anyway, as artist are all different and to have them compete vs. eachother is nonsense to me.

I am also tired of hearing that X&Y was not as good as AROBTTH in terms of song quality and album sales, because both albums are genius and far better than most albums out there (at least those that are marketed to the masses). I like the fact that X&Y did not sell as much, because there is too much pressure to follow up a platium selling album with another platium selling album. The follow up albums always seem to suffer artistically.

I can't wait for their sound to evolve....as whatever it becomes, I have no doubt it will be genius.

haha. Yes, I hope :)

Also.....Lucky by Radiohead might seem a 'ballad' but it has a much darker sound with very good lyrics and also a more sophisticated and clever composition and musical parts.....and really isn't a ballad in the same way. I think alot of very early original coldplay fans, including myself, would prefer coldplay to go this way as alot of their earlier songs (including the Parachutes album) have some pretty cool and clever chords and musical parts and some of their songs have driffted a bit from that. Songs like X&Y are ok and it starts well, the verse melody is great and jonny's guitar parts in the instrumental break are great too but that song could have been soo much better. I always think back to the great musicallity they showed on early songs and I really was drawn to that when I first heard songs like such a rush, and shiver etc....I'm not saying that they have lost all that now but certain songs from X&Y just needed that bit of extra work & Twisted Logic is lacking something and really didn't need to be on the record. They have some very, very good work outside of their albums, crests of waves, I ran away, idiot, murder, careful where you stand and songs like easy to please are top notch songs.

Well stated Gareth, but I do think that twisted logic is a great song and belongs on the album as much as any other (except hardest part of course). Rhythmically and lyrically it sounds great, and I like the fact that it constantly builds until the end. It is dark like "lucky", and is different than anything else they have released. "Such a rush" also builds to the end, but is not nearly as good as twisted logic imo. Even though clocks is my all time fav song, I just don't want to hear 50 similar versions of clocks in the future.

BTW - how did this thread go off on this topic? I like it.....
