Is the Muslim world really that nuts?

Featured Replies

People chanting death to Denmark and Europe over a cartoon? Does this actually represent the feelings of Muslim's in the middle east or is this some crazy media spin? If this is really what these people are going to act like in a world of free international press, then fuck em, they are acting like children. It really makes me sad. I and others I know who normally empathize with problems of the muslim people in the middle east are losing alot of respect for them over this.

But maybe its all a hype, maybe its something the media focusses on.

Same here.

The media certainly knows how to take one story, run with it then blow it out of proportion. But this is actually happening, so I doubt it's all a media spin on the situation.

Is it true that Iran (correct me if I'm wrong on this) is running a contest for cartoons mocking the Holocaust?

The entire situation is getting more and more fucked up by the day.

Well of course its happening, but in the same way, a lot of things are happening. Haha bear with me.

There are neo-nazist's in America, or in London, if the media focussed on this small, tiny minority, would Americans and English people be seen as Nazi's?

Its hard to know how to see it because everyone is so badly educated on Muslim people generally.

I see what you're saying now.

I can't speak for the Muslim world, and I won't even attempt to. I don't pretend to know these people, their situation or what they're going through.

I think that if the world did take a very close look at this region (which it HAS TO), we would find that it is indeed a minority. The overwhelming majority, I'm sure, is just as perplexed by the whole situation as us. Of course, I could be wrong. But I sure hope I'm not.

This is what disgusts me about war. We're waging a war on a country where there is a VERY VERY small amount of people to fight. It's almost like a minor racism... I don't know how to describe what I'm thinking, sorry. But am I making a little sense? We're making a lot of enemies in that region of the world because it's so blatantly obvious that we don't know squat about the people who we've involved in our fights.

Well you could see it as fighting against a small minority of people, or fighting with them against their oppressive leaders, but I dont even wanna get into that right now hehehehe.

;) Ok

Well, no, what I was really trying to say is that a lot of people in America view Iraqis or Muslims as terrorists. And these cartoon riots certainly aren't helping their reputation. I really didn't want to bring the war into it, but it was a quick and easy example I had.

I just wonder how everything there can ever settle down. Or will it always be like this?

I think things are beginning to settle, the minority terrorist groups have made their point, and now there appears to be less demonstrations.

I dont know for sure, just seems that way.

The measures they want to take seem a little extreme, I mean, death to the drawers? It's ridiculous. But still,it's their religion and their believes, and they felt offended by Mahoma cartoons.

I think what the debate is is the lengths to which you should go to state your point.

I mean. I've found things offensive before but I don't go burning government buildings over it...

Yeah but you could probably say most Muslims wouldn't do that, but some will. Just like how YOU wouldnt do something so nuts but other American's would, the difference is, because we are less educated of Muslims we kinda lump every Muslim into one category.

I know a few Muslims, one of them is particularly a good friend, and he's embarassed by the actions and says that most of the people in his area back home feel the same way.

Yeah, it's sort of like how I'm embaressed by my country and fellow Americans every day of my life.

That's the spirit

What do you think about this cartoons?

heyyyy^!!!

;)

Well...I think it's safe to say Islamic-Americans do not riot and protest in the US because they are a minority and would simply bring themselves unwanted attention and backlash.

Last winter, I actually did a project on Islam for theology class. I visited 2 mosques, watched 20 men pray at one mosque and watched 300 men pray at another mosque. I met with the imam (person who leads the prayers) of each mosque and talked with them for at least 2 hours apiece. I shook hands with most of the Muslim people at the mosques and they were very hospitable...especially since they knew I was there to actually learn about their traditions and that I was respecting them for who they were. At the mosque of 300 people, the imam wouldn't let me leave without eating lunch with them, and so I sat cross-legged in the room with them and ate curry rice and chicken with my hands like they did. They enlightened me on the connections between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam...and how they are all branches of the same tree.

I think people tend to hate or speak in generalities about what they do not understand, and for me to get to experience Muslim traditions first-hand made me completely put to rest any prejudices I had. Add to the fact that my uncle is a Muslim and was born in Iran, it only made me respect his religion even more. The majority of Muslims are kind people who follow the peaceful life the Qu'ran instructs them to...yet their entire tradition is tainted by those who adopt extreme interpretations of their religious text. It's a shame.

To anyone wanting to learn more about Islam, setting up a visit to a mosque and talking with Muslims face to face is a life-changing experience.

first of all i'd like to say that i respect everyone's religion...

well, my moto is that you must work hard to be successfull and get what you want/need... there's nothing more ridiculous that spend a bunch of hours in church, mosque or whatever, praying for a better world, peace and shit...

damn... make a better world yourself instead of praying!!!! ACT!!!! it's easy to seat in a chair and wait that god solves everything...

right..I am not going to read so much :P

right..I am not going to read so much

So lazy man!!!!!!!!!!1:laugh1:

Soo lazy WOMAN! :P

At least this is a usefull thread... too complicating for you Marina?

I agree that people are making way to much out of this.... You should respect everyone. I haven't seen the comic they were so stressed about, but it was all over the news here in Holland. So the Muslims didn't think it was funny? Then they shouldn't pay attention to it, they're only making their culture look stupid. Not all Muslims were mad about it after all, there were just some who overreacted (in my opinion) Many comics are written about Christians as well, so what?

its not complicating..Im a lazy WOMAN! :P

let me say something about that "famous" Muslim world, at least about Turkish Muslims. we do not draw our prophet's face.we do not want somebody to draw his face.also there exists some cinema films about Islam and Muhammed's face wasnt seen in them.one reason for that is; if people were allowed to draw his pictures, those pictures or sculptures whatever would probably be sacred and most probably there would be a picture of him in all Muslims' houses or some would wear a necklace on which Prophet's face is seen.and so this would be used as a god or idol (i dont know if idol is used for this expression. before Islam people were using idols and believed that idols were something like bridge between the God and people or they directly saw idols as Gods). another reason is that we dont want such "cartoon" like events.

i know everyone has -should have- the right to do whatever s/he likes.but as i stated earlier in the News&Sports section, those cartoons shouldnt have been published, in my opinion.because if you are looking for respect from others, you should respect them or their beliefs first.of course i dont mean that they didnt respect our religious beliefs so we will kill them or threaten them or bomb their buildings. i find those attacks stupid and outragious, like many Turkish people or like many Muslims.those who dont think so are extremists or provocators...

Reilley, I have thought that same question recently. It really does look pretty crazy over there seeing how they are reacting to a cartoon!?! I mean I think every single religion goes through its share of poking and being made fun of. As a Christian I have to listen to people use Christ, Jesus Christ, Oh my God, and the like all day long and it is painful but I don't say to other Christian friends lets go burn stuff and make a statement. I don't think burning flags and embassies really represents true religion but rather twisted religion.

That's my opinion.

I think the western world should accept that they are not allowed to draw the picture of Muhammed.................and well they apologised...........I also think the muslims are just overeacting...I can understand that they are angry.....but not in that way....
