What makes a song a song?

Featured Replies

well....what makes a song a song....?Or what makes a good song a good song?

I sometimes wonder this...because people talk about "songs" which are no songs in my opinion....which are maybe shit or something like that.....

a so called "song" does not always deserve to be called "song"!

So....that's my opinion!

Song -

1. Music

a. A brief composition written or adapted for singing.

b. The act or art of singing: broke into song.

What makes a good song?

For me, lyrics matter 110%. I cant take people seriously who are talking cheesy bullshit. Case point: Coldplay

True...but if someone just says fantastic lyrics out loud with no rythm or music....it may sound slightly drab...or it will just be poetry.

1. lyrics that have actual words in them (sometimes, it's okay if there is like ... amade up word, if that is an artist's style.

2. some kind of instruments, synth or actual insturments

3. a catchy tune...well thats not true. it depends on your definition of catchy and tune

i think a good song all depends on how a persons mind listens to the music because some people are attracted to different things in a song. Like, some people won't listen to a song unless it has good lyrics, others might not even pay attention to lyrics and hope there is drum parts in it or a certain guitar part.

you know

hahaha ha?

actually Coldplay have good lyrics, some sucks very deeply, but i enjoy most of them, even if i'm not in the mood to listen to them i have to say Chris Martin writes beatiful lyrics

Well this is why lyrics are so important: Shit music with great lyrics still sounds shit, you wont waste time on it to even realise the lyrics are good. But wonderful lyrics and good music is just good, you acknowledge the lyrics only then.

yeeees

Coldplay messed up some songs on x&y because of that, for example: i think Swallowed In The Sea has a wonderful sound and pretty shit lyrics...

but i think good music exists without good lyrics (see Sigur Ros). i don't understand anything of their lyrics, but the sound lets me forget it.

i just feel like posting for no reason since i haven't posted in a very long time (emphasis on the "very")

so ignore me :)

i think it has to do with the thought put into it because if a song is about how something affected your life then it almost seems like something more personal...such as "Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own" by U2....

1.Lyrics. Personally I don't enjoy songs that talk about an event...the only example I can think of now is 'What's your number' by Cypress Hill.

2.Something about the music that makes it special, like a guitar or piano solo.

Like people, maybe songs beside good lyrics and music need that famous factor X!

Anything Coldplay.

(-_-)... i am a coldplay fan myself but i just cant stand it when ppl are ONLY INTO ONE KIND OF MUSIC!! I think that just makes it seem like you like a certain band or kind of music more to define to ppl who u r and not really because u like that music...

it's like all those damm freaks who would listen to metal and metal only and all the time...... maybe they secretly have britney spears on their computers :)

whatever, im sure u like other bands as well- at least i hope

For me the most inportant thing is when the artist/band knows how to "play" with the music.....when you can't hear a particualr style immediately...when they use different instruments etc.....

and when songs don't have a boring order like:

verse

chorus

verse

chorus

bridge

chorus (repeated 4000 times)

I think songs like "Stairway to heaven" for example.......everytime a little bit in the song changes.....and in the end there is something totally different than at the beginning........

or so many more songs...which change..and which you could make maybe 3 songs of....

This is brilliant music for me!

Lyrics are also important for me.....but if the songs are like I described above...I don't care that much about lyrics.....I mean....they could sing only 2 phrases and repeat them.....if the music changes this is not that bad....

TOTALLY agreed.

ZEPPELIN ROCKS!!!

For me, the melody and the lyrics are pretty important... both equally, but most of the times, what makes a good song is what I feel when I'm listening to it; if it's indifferent to me, surely it isn't a good song. Another important thing is, f.e, if I have a pleasant feeling when I'm listening to it, if it has a message between the lines and so on!

exactly

I think the most important thing for music is to sound different from cookie cutter music and still sound complete in some way. Everything has to have a strong harmony and fit together. That doesn't neccessarily mean good lyrics or even lyrics or even a singer. However a rhyme like "I like macaroni and cheese, it makes me wheeze" might ruin a song.

One important things for me is the title.I do not but that is really important for me

everytime a little bit in the song changes.....

I think having changes in a song a few times usually makes it sound good, I agree... like when a group has a song that sounds like it has 3 or 4 different melodies that's usually a good song. The dave matthews band does that well :smug:
