'Teenage girls binge-drinking more than boys'

Teenage girls in Britain are now binge drinking more than boys, it emerged.

Research suggest almost a third regularly drink to excess, while women of all ages have doubled the amount they drink since the last decade.

Experts said the binge-drinking culture is 'spiralling out of control', turning town centres across the country into 'mini Ibizas'.

Martin Plant, a Professor of Addiction Studies, said British teenagers and young adults are among the worst binge drinkers in the world.

Britain and Ireland are the only two countries in Europe where girls binge drink more than boys.

The disturbing findings, released by the European Schools Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs, revealed that 29 per cent of British female students admitted to drinking excessively at least three times per month.

The figure for male students was 26 per cent. Binge drinking has also dramatically risen in younger children.

In 1992 15-year-old girls who drank alcohol consumed an average of six units per week compared to nine for the boys.

This has now doubled to 12 units per week for girls and 14 units for boys.

Speaking at the conference on Young People and Alcohol, Professor Plant said: "The UK and Ireland are the only countries where girls binge drink more than boys.

"Years ago this wasn't an issue but the cheap alcopop market has changed this.

"Now bars specifically target women with cheap promotions as they compete for business. It is irresponsible."

He also claimed cheaper alcohol and extended opening hours had both contributed to a situation he described as 'desperate'.

Professor Plant, who works at the Alcohol and Health Research Trust at the University of the West of England, added: "Thanks to Government policy, alcohol is cheaper and more widely available than ever.

"They pushed through legislation on licensing hours despite misgivings by doctors, judges, and police chiefs, and against the wishes of two thirds of the population.

"Now we have a situation where every town across the UK has a 'mini-Ibiza' at its centre. Something has to be done.

"We are one of the worst countries for binge-drinking in the world. And the situation is getting worse. It is spiralling out of control.

"We are drinking double what we drank in 1992, and there are twice as many alcohol related deaths."

He added: "The growing epidemic of alcohol problems in the UK now requires courageous political action to deal with a huge and tragic toll of accidents, violence, public disorder illness and premature death.

"The driving force behind this epidemic has been rising alcohol consumption.

"Current Government policies on alcohol now need to be revised. Action is urgently needed to protect the health and safety of the public.

Earlier this year a shocking survey revealed that teenage girls are now more likely than boys to smoke, steal and take drugs.

In a disturbing confirmation of the spread of the 'ladette' culture, it found violence, aggression and self-destructive behaviour has spread alarmingly among girls over the past 20 years.

yeah i'd agree with that! ;0)
