Eric Clapton hits out at Coldplay and U2

Featured Replies

eh..... He's done 2 albums in the past 2 years and is currently doing a world tour as well as working on another new album. So you can't be that big a Clapton fan. As far as writing music goes, he's had his best days. I don't think you can expect a guy who's been playing for more than 40 years to write another classic album like Disraeli Gears with cream. The guys 60 years old working harder than any other of the big time older musicians. Sorry can't be bothered to write more, but the bottom line is he still does a lot. More than anyone i can think of. the guys battled alcoholism, heroin addiction and the death of his son to name a few things. I don't agree that coldplay sound like U2, even though i've heard that a million times. All i'm saying is the guy deserves respect.

I'm not SAYING he doesn't deserve respect. No, I'm not that big of a fan anymore. I was a HUGE classic rock freak about 2 years ago now. Really, I listened to NOTHING that came out in the 80s on. I loved Clapton's old stuff, loved Cream and Derek and the Dominoes and all that. Sessions for (with?) Robert J just bored me. Clapton's become a nostalgic item to me now, someone who has earned my respect but not my endearing devotion. I do not deny that he has been through a LOT. His recovery and battles have made him a great person, I'm sure...

I just think that a lot of the old rock stars are dickheads now. They don't fit in so they end up alienating whole portions of their fanbase (like me) because they don't know when to shut the hell up. He obviously doesn't get that he's not going to let people even want to hear the past if they think that he's the voice of it.

ok fair enough. i don't think he should have said all of that stuff either. It just annoys me when you get idiots calling him a tit or whatever. to be honest though, it was probably very off the cuff. i've never heard him criticise anyone in an interview, nor have i ever heard him be anything but modest in the extreme when people label him as the greatest guitarist or as a god. after all, he only said that they sound like U2 and that Chris dances like bono. That does not necessarily mean he doesn’t like them.

you won't see him do a paul weller thats for sure, who by the way i think is a wanker.

i was never really a fan of clapton, he's over rated. maybe he should look at how famous he was and if it got to his head. i still dont see coldplay acting like that though.

What exactly is that' date=' anyway? Those types of labels are so unnecessary.. as if a band is only limited to what's "in their character" somehow. Chris can dance and very well should if he pleases. He's said many times that he not embarrassed to do so anymore.. "even if it does make him look like a twat."[/quote']

Yeah, I agree! So Coldplay members are too tough to dance or whatever? People shouldn't be confined to labels. You can tell that even though he does look crazy, he's just doing what comes to him.

Which is just how it should be!! Far better that than something perfectly choreographed à la Madonna!!

Madonna is a totally different type of entertainer though. :laugh3:

Exactly right - an "entertainer" rather than a "singer"!!;)

it doesn't matter if it's true or not, Eric clapton can say whatever he wants to say because he has earned that right. if it was ashlee simpson that would be not fair because she is just a stupid girl who tries to make music and ends up making the fool of herself everytime. but if we talk about eric clapton it's different, no matter if we agree or not

exactly, well said. After all it's only his opinion, does not necessarily mean its true. I think Eric and Coldplay are both great.

"coldplay_97 i was never really a fan of clapton, he's over rated. maybe he should look at how famous he was and if it got to his head. i still dont see coldplay acting like that though. "

Thats a load of bollocks Eric is not over rated. He's probably the most complete guitarist that's ever lived. He deserves more respect than just about anyone who's still alive in the music industry today. He's always been a man of principals and never been one "to sell out" for a hit record. The guy was asked to be in the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. That's not a bad CV.

Even if you don't like his music, you could still watch him and be like.. shit, this guy can really play the guitar and for that reason alone no one can claim that's he's "over rated"

Whaaaat.

No one "earns" the right to bag on anyone else, it doesn't matter who you are. Doesn't help any that Clapton's comments are completely off base and reek of some sort of jealousy.

I agree, Tania.

A person can only earn respect in one way, but he's lost my respect in others. I can't ever deny the fact that he is a guitar genius. Who would? I've heard him play, and he's absolutely brilliant.

He shouldn't feel a need to shoot his mouth off, though. It's too bad artists like him can't move forward and try carving out new territory in the music industry, instead of examining and re-examining the past.

he wasnt all rude about it, he didnt say "fuck coldplay!, fuck U2!" it was just an opinion and everyone has the right to have one specially someone who has a respectful career as a musician.

Have you ever heard any of the CP boys slag other musicians off? No, and long may it continue.

It's pointless and always backfires.

Then he must be deaf and blind if he can't hear and see the difference btw U2 and Coldplay :dozey:

Anyone can say what they want but at least they should prove what they say, it's not just an opinion like yours or mine can be, he talked with journalists ;) and well it's sooooooo easy to hit these two bands nowadays, it seems that if a band is successfull it's always because they sell themselves for money

Some of the simplest songs lyrically can be the best.

Some of the most complex songs lyrically can be the worst.

Swallowed in the Sea succeeds because of its simplicity.

If you only want to hear complex lyrics go listen to some poetry, or Morrissey or something!:smug:

I understand that, the lyrics in A Message are simple and they're really nice, plus they make sense:

My song is love

Love to the loveless, shown

And it goes up

You don't have to be alone

Your heavy heart

Is made of stone

And its so hard to see you clearly

You don't have to be on your own

You don't have to be on your own

And I'm not gonna take it back

Well I'm not gonna say I don't mean that

Your the target that I'm aiming at

And I get that message home

...etc

But Swallowed in The Sea...

You cut me down a tree and brought it back to me

and that’s what made me see where I was going wrong

I'm sorry, WHAT?!

Does that actually make sense to anyone? I like simple lyrics, but they need to make sense to me, and that just doesn't.

And I prefer The Smiths to Morissey's solo stuff anyway.

Yes - it's obvious. It's a song about conservation!!:laugh3:

i very much like and respect eric claption, but WTF??? i dont believe that is true AT ALL. i think we're all VERY VERY lucky to have coldplay and U2 and like bands leading the music industry. what the hell is he talking about, "people dont know where [rock and roll] came from?? both U2 and Coldplay are huge fans of the classics and have performed songs from Jimi Hendrix, Jonny Cash, the Beatles, and the Stones in concert over the years.

Poor eric. i think hes becoming senile.

:laugh3: Anytime someone says the word senile, I crack up... ahahahaha

What really bugs is that the guy says they just attend award shows. Just, attend award shows? The two bands that are most heavily involved in bettering the worst parts of world by supporting admirable organizations, and they just attend award shows. Wow.. for him to have the face to say something like that speaks so low of him.

Meh.. it's obvious to me that line refers to someone that does amazing or grand things for him, and those actions made him "see where he was going wrong." Though.. even if one doesn't see the metaphor, one line doesn't mean the entire song doesn't make sense.

The 61-year-old guitar legend told The Times: "Right now, the power of music sits with Simon Cowell and Coldplay and U2, who are really people who just attend awards shows.

How dare Clapton mention Simon Cowell in the same breathe as Coldplay and U2

Cowell is single handedly killing music with his manufactured shite, ramming all his boy and girl bands down our throats through the media all the time,i definitely sense a large dollop of jealousy from old slow hand.
