Estonians Enjoy Skype Conversation With Coldplay

Featured Replies

Two Estonian university students enjoyed a private 20-minute Skype call with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin yesterday.

Edging out 6,000 other hopefuls, the pair was handpicked by band members from a worldwide pool of contestants who left a message in Coldplay’s Skype voicemail to tie in with the release of “Talk,” the hypnotic hit single released from Coldplay’s multi-platinum third album “X&Y” a few months ago.

The contest was a joint promotion by Skype, the global Internet communications company, and EMI, the world’s largest independent music company. The promotion was open to all Skype users through a dedicated contest website at http://www.skype.com/campaigns/coldplay. The site also features a streaming video of the “Talk” single, directed by Anton Corbijn.

The winning entry by 22-year-olds Kaisa Männik and Tiiu Laks, chosen for its originality and character, passionately highlighted the difference between the way bear sounds are impersonated around the world (“Rawwrrrggghhh!”), and the way it is done in Estonia (“Mõmm-mõmm!”).

“Turns out Chris Martin actually is as friendly and cool as he appears on the Web, TV and magazines,” Kaisa Männik said after the Skype conversation with the Coldplay singer. “There were no awkward moments. He was just the way we expected him to be: famous, but down-to-earth.”

“The next Coldplay album will be very interesting and experimental,” added Tiiu Laks. “Which is great, but we also got him to promise to meet us, should they ever play in Estonia. I told Chris I’ll be a lawyer soon and he better keep his word. He agreed.”

Skype allows anyone with an Internet connection to make free Internet voice and video calls.

Available in 27 languages, Skype is used by people in almost every country around the world, and Skyping has become a global phenomenon.

How cool! I was wondering what heppend with that. Figures the guys would best love a message involving strange noises. They probably laughed for hours about that. :P

Thanks for sharing!

(*Waits patiently for next album*)

im surprised they promised to meet them if they ever go to estonia. pretty cool

If they every go to Estonia they absolutely should come to Finland too  Chris promised :wink3:

Hey guys! I know I haven't been around much, but I have been super-busy with uni-work (I'm graduating in few weeks). But I just had to make an appearance now 'cos well, I was one of the two lucky Estonian girls who got to talk to Chris over Skype! Just thought I'd let you know that all the cool ppl hang on coldplaying.com (even if they ain't too active). ;)

Kaisa

Ps. I never thought we'd win. Now I believe in miracles. :)

Kaisa, I didn't even know you were registered here, hehe. I'm still so happy for you :nice:

Nice to see you here, too! :) I have been reading news here, but I haven't posted anything in a looooong while.

Woot!!! Im from Estonia too! :D Oh dear.. I sure hope they come around here too. :P

hehe.. kust teil see "mõmm-mõmm" idee tuli? :)

How you've been so lucky...but hey I think I wouldn't been able to say a word if I were you :laugh3::laugh3:

Yay, more Estonian fans! :D

Mõmm-mõmm tuli Tiiu õemehelt, kes on austraallane, ta leidis, et see on jube naljakas. Juba vana nali, meil tuli see lihtsalt meelde ja mõtlesime ära kasutada. :P

How you've been so lucky...but hey I think I wouldn't been able to say a word if I were you

I did worry not being able to say a word (I used to joke to my friends that if I won't faint then I'll get to talk, maybe  ), but Chris is one of the easiest persons to talk to! ;) And doing it together with Tiiu (we have been very good friends for almost 7yrs) made it even easier. :)

Oh lord, I would have pissed my pants in your position ;) And afterwards I'd bang my head against the wall for all the stupid things I'd have said!!

Congratulations to you both lucky girls, we all envy you :D

Thank you, thank you! :)

Being envied for once feels so great! :p :D Now I can truly say I've had my 15min of fame. LOL.

What did you talk about with them?

I was just about to ask that

btw Kaisa i sooo envy you!!!!!

Well, we just talked about random things and joked around. I think the coolest bit was that we were told that we have 10min, but Chris talked 20min to us! :D We told them to come to Estonia (I managed to do it more than once :p) and reminded him how they said in one interview a year ago that they will. At first he joked that they always lie, but then said that they really mean what they say, but all the planning is not easy. But they really would like to tour Eastern Europe. He said he hopes to meet us when they come to Estonia (haha, I will keep that in mind for sure ;)). We talked about music, he asked what new music we liked (we said The Feeling - I think he hadn't heard of them before), he asked us if we like The Raconteurs and that he likes The White Stripes a lot (and he told me to give him a call when I've made up my mind if I like The Raconteurs or The WS more - haha, we mocked him a bit how easy it'll be to call him :p). We talked about R.E.M. and Estonian music (though we didn't really manage to name him any good Estonian bands, I did however mention Brainstorm - my other favourite band from Latvia).

Also, we talked about the Hardest Part video (as I don't really like it much). We asked him why they picked our voicemail. Hih. He said 'cos they were looking for character in those things and we had it. At first he answered: That's a good question, I've started wondering it myself. LOL.

I mention how their promoting Fair Trade is really working 'cos I found about it 'cos of them and my friends have learnt about it from me etc.

We talked a bit about uni, thesises ('cos he asked what we do on Tuesdays and well, both Tiiu and me are graduating this year, so we have exams and stuff). Chris said that we are going to be hard to forget.

Hmmm...what else. Oh, right he asked what language we speak in Estonia and let us speaks some Estonian.

Also, we had been to the CP gig in Dublin last year and we told him that and then we told him how we were in the front row with the Estonian flag. Then I told him to lie that he remembers us. LOL. He managed that very well. :D

Guess that's shortly about it. Oh, we did ask about the new album, but of course he told that he has ideas, but he can't tell us. All in all the whole chat was very fun and friendly and with jokes. Beyond all I could ever wish for. Just perfect. :)

So, I want to talk with them too! It's my best dream :)

WOW~That is sooooooo awesome. Good for you!!

:D :D :D

Ps. Kinia, it's a very good dream to have! ;)

But they really would like to tour Eastern Europe.

I wish.....but i don't really believe it!!

But , Kaisa, I am so glad you were the one to win coz now the Eastern Europe tour looks closer than ever . (haha i won't mention that the next tour will be at least after 2 years, when they release their 4th album) :D

lol

hope springs eternal...
