How Crazy is your Country about the World Cup?

Featured Replies

people here in germany are going freakin bonkers because of the world cup ...

there are flags everywhere ... (not only german flags though)

i like the fact that we're kinda patriotic again ,... since we weren't very proud of being german before ... (that's what they're all writing in the newspapers; we won back our patriotism)

:)

today i went to that tiny little shop to buy a german flag.

it was sooo cheap (1,90€) since everybody wants a flag and all the other nation's flags are expensive (except for brasil; it's 1,90€ as well)

i went there with my friend (who is portuguese) and she wanted to buy that portuguese flag and had to pay 9,90€!! :D

I don't know where this atmosphere will be in the end...I mean it's increasing everyday...

and about the patriotism....one thing that annyos me is that there are many people critisising it because of our past...we are a new generation and should at least forget this for these 4 weeks....

i agree. i'm happy for germany, winning back their patriotism. there was too much negative energy surrounding the country before, and it's not the people's fault at all. good on you guys :nice:

Holland is crazy about the World Cup.. a study showed that from all European countries, the Dutch spend the most time at work talking about the Cup, logging on to internet sites, betting, etc. :P

Yup... we're obsessed...

If you already havent guessed already, England is completely mad, nutty, and the rest

I swear the country still goes on about 66 endlessly

Awwww...thanks Bonita:nice:

our country would be crazy about the WC if we were in ... although the last good result was in 1986 (4th) we still believe in our footballers :P we'll be back next time and surprise everybody ... i believe in belgium

Well it's a shame the Chinese team aint playing in the WC!:(

But people in my country are really concerned about the WC, though not so crazy as the Europeans. Many people get up at midnight to watch the fantastic matches! When the last match is over, we can already see the daylight!

haha you are most welcome jules. but i'm serious. people who slag off germany because they are being patriotic and are proud of their country have no grounding for saying so. it's unfair to say it, really. we've been studying germany for half a year hahaha and really, seeing germany's past, you guys really had a black mark against your name, when it was not the people's fault at all. you can't blame your country for its leaders.

germany deserves to put the past behind them now, they deserve to be patriotic, and they deserve to be genuinely happy about what's going on now, and stuff like the world cup, stuff like the olympics help generate such a great spirit, and i'm really glad it allows germany to showcase their country, and exude such positivity. :nice: anyone who says they're being too patriotic or being too celebratory needs to realise what this country went through, let them bask in their glory :)

Hm..well although this is a really nice comment by you I have to say one thing against it:

It really was Germany's main fault in the past....they elected this leader.....and I can't see a reason why they shouldn't have done it....he promised the people so many nice things....when he was chancellor then he began to kill all those people (the jews and the handicaped persons)...and many germans knew about that but didn't do anything against it and just said they didn't know...so.....it really is a shame for us....but when I think about myself...actually i have nothing to do with that....we are a new generation...of course all these things that happened in the past can't be forgotten and shouldn't be forgotten...

but if people critisize us for our new patriotism....then I'm not pleased about it!

they were hypnotised by him, he was a great orator, and had people bound under his 'spell' you could say. people may have followed him, but i still don't think it was necessarily their fault, with a leader such as himself. but you are right, you guys are a new generation, and deserve to be happy about being german

Ok, Ive seen threads about the world cup already, and i already knew how crazy brazilians were about the World Cup (or just football in general).

But today i was at the airport waiting for my flight to come back home and watching Australia vs Japan, and i started noticing how EVERY single person in the food court wouldnt take their eyes from the television. Old people, young people, guys, girls, kids... everyone was concentrated on the game, and it wasnt even Brazil who was playing!!

But that just doesnt show how INSANE brazilians are about the World Cup! The country is gonna stop for this event, and i mean it LITERALLY ! Malls are closing half an hour before brazil's games and re-opening half an hour later. I dont have classes on the days Brazil plays. Companies are leting their employees get out earlier. Buses are gonna stop during the matches, etc, etc, etc.

I just started wondering if theres any other place where a country actually STOPS functioning because of the World Cup... So, is your country as crazy for football as mine??

i wish Usa was like that.

:bigcry:
