ooh and at the end chris does a five second rap called Empty Shelf, and Guy tries to make some sort of announcement to end the program and it's very cute. :)

SONG OF THE WEEK: X&Y

I’ve always loved this program where Coldplay discuss their last album [X&Y] in terms of releationships, both internal and external and how making the album brought them back together as a band. According to Chris Martin, the title X&Y is based on the ups and downs of everyday life. He says:

“My whole day is a mixture of optimism and pessimism in its most extreme forms. And that’s what X&Y is to me. It’s two sides. I like the fact they’re very strong letters, very clear.”

X&Y also explains the unexplainable, which I feel it’s very apt in the circumstances…

Also, here’s the song ‘X&Y’ performed live in Washington DC [thanks saku17]

Trying hard to speak and

Fighting with my weak hand

Driven to distraction

It’s all part of the plan

When something is broken

And you try to fix it

Trying to repair it

Any way you can

I dive in at the deep end

You become my best friend

I want to love you but I don’t know if I can

I know something is broken and I’m trying to fix it

Trying to repair it any way I can

Oooh, oooh…

You and me are floating on a tidal wave

Together

You and me are drifting into outer space

And singing oooh, oooh…

You and me are floating on a tidal wave

Together

You and me are drifting into outer space

You and me are floating on a tidal wave

Together

You and me are drifting into outer space

And singing oooh, oooh

Oooh, oooh…

Classic Clip: 'Clocks' Live In Manchester, UK for MTV (2002)

Coldplay’s concert in Manchester, UK in October 2002 was filmed especially for MTV and was one of the best performances the MEN Arena has ever seen. The gig was shown on MTV on Sunday, October 20th 2002 (did you see it?)

At the time, 'The Scientist' proved too elegiac for American audiences, so they got Clocks while the UK lapped up The Scientist. Then the UK got Clocks too - and it's so tense it sounds like it has been wound up. Chris Martin's piano again dominates with a catchy little phrase, the rest of the band filling in the surrounding sonic blanks with understated guitar, bursts of bass and an off-the-wall drum rhythm. And Martin's voice is as impassioned as we've come to expect. "And nothing else compares," he cries, and as far as Coldplay go, it's difficult to argue.

The MEN Arena has been the largest indoor arena in Europe since opening in 1995 and has remained one of the most structurally advanced venues on the continent. The arena was built to coincide with Manchester's 1996 Olympic bid, and was heavily promoted in the campaign for the 2000 Olympic bid. When opened the arena was the first large venue in Europe to follow the traditionally American arena layout of 360 degree seating and its style has been a prototype for many other arenas in Europe such as the Kölnarena in Cologne, Germany.

It seems that Coldplay and the MEN Arena go hand in hand.

To celebrate the launch of Casino Royale today on DVD, here’s Coldplay performing ‘You Only Live Twice’ - another Bond theme tune. Jonnyboy rocks the guitar on this song muchly. While staying true to the song, Coldplay nevertheless makes it their very own. A great example on how to treat a cover song. Thanks to DrkStalker for the upload. Sorry it’s slightly ropey…

You only live twice or so they say,

One life for yourself, one for the rest.

And you, drift through the years and life seems strange,

Till one dream appears and love is its name.

And love is a stranger who’ll beckon you on,

Don’t think of the danger or the stranger is gone.

Oh you, you only live twice or so it seems

One life for yourself, one for your dreams

And love is a stranger who’ll beckon you on,

Don’t think of the danger or the stranger is gone.

Classic Clip: Coldplay Perform Daylight On Top Of The Pops (2002)

Piano-led 'Daylight' is track 6 from Coldplay's sophomore album 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head'. This album had greater use of piano than Coldplay's debut album or most other rock bands popular at the time. The use of piano on A Rush of Blood has been subsequently credited with influencing the sound of bands such as Keane and Athlete, although this was in dispute at the time.

Daylight has a wobbly Eastern guitar intro - think Love-era Cult, Porcupine-era Echo & The Bunnymen. Another burrowing hook that fleshes itself out as the song progresses. This song was first played live in 2002 at Queen's Hall, Edinburgh, and recently re-introduced at the Latin America Tour of 2007.

Top of the Pops, also known as TOTP, was a long-running British music chart television programme, made and broadcast by the BBC. It was originally shown each week, mostly on BBC One, from 1 January 1964 to 30 July 2006. Each weekly programme consisted of performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music artists.

Top of the Pops has also been made available to television broadcasters in many different countries in the form of a franchise package. However, after some success, the majority of these have now also been cancelled.

Classic Coldplay Clip: Yellow (Video)

The music video for "Yellow" was filmed at Studland Bay, near Swanage, England. The area is known for its beautiful beaches and is a National Trust location. The video is very minimalistic and simple, featuring only lead singer Chris Martin singing the song as he walks along the beach. He is wearing a raincoat with his hair wet, suggesting that it had just rained. The video is one continuous shot with no cuts. Also, the entire sequence is in slow motion.

Originally it had been intended for the whole band to appear in the video, in a sunny setting. However, band member Will Champion's mother's funeral was held on the day of the recording, so it was decided that only Martin would appear in the video. The weather also opposed the original plan, with harsh winds and rain instead of the sunny day that had been envisioned. It had also been originally intended for there to be moving stars in the sky, as if in a time-lapse. The directors however agreed that this would have been too distracting for the focus of the video, which was Martin.

The video was directed by James & Alex of The Artists Company. The video was shot at 50 frames per second, twice the regular speed. At the shoot, Chris Martin had to sing the song at double speed so that the audio and visual content would sync up. The final product is slowed to 25 frames per second, giving the slow motion effect of the video. The transition of the video from night to day was achieved through telecine. During the transfer from film to videotape, an operator manually adjusted the amount of lighting for blue in the beginning, red in the middle, and yellow at the end of the video. Shooting was completed in a single day, with five takes for the video.

Yellow is the track that propelled Coldplay onto the commercial airwaves and into the headphones of millions.
