World Cup Young Player Award

Featured Replies

German Player Lukas Podolski won the "World Cup Young Player Award" awarded by the FIFA. Other "nominees" were Lionel Messi (ARG), Cristiano Ronaldo (POR), Wayne Rooney (ENG), Luis Valencia (ECU), Tranquillo Barnetta (CH) and Besc Fabregas (ESP).

With three goals in the tournament to date and a series of impressive performances alongside fellow attacker Miroslav Klose, the 21-year-old Podolski, who is about to join German champions Bayern Munich from FC Cologne, has been chosen by FIFA's Technical Study Group (TSG) as the best young player in the competition.

Podolski still has another match to play, of course, when Germany face Portugal in Stuttgart's Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion on Saturday in the match for third place. A win, and perhaps even another goal, would be a wonderful way for the affable youngster to bring his first FIFA World Cup to a close. Here, in an exclusive interview with FIFAworldcup.com, Podolski gives his own impressions on how he thinks he has fared.

What do you think about him winning? I think it's well deserved, he did a great job!

I also think he did a great job...although he was not that good at the beginning...

I think Philip Lahm would also have been a good choice....

Messi is from Argentina...anyway I agree with Julia, maybe Lahm was a better choice, but hey they're both Germans in the end :nice:

Lahm is "too old" for this award, but he would grab it without any doubts.

i think Podolski deserved the award if we take a look at the list

Lahm is only a year older ... O.o but yeah, i think he'd deserve it a lot more since lukas is a good player (no doubt) but Lahm is better :P

Well I think Lahm simply isn't "famous" enough.. Who the hell knows Philipp Lahm except the Germans? :P

Lahm would win it, but............

How does a player qualify?

All players born on or after 1 January 1985 who play in the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 will qualify for the 2006 Gillette Best Young Player award. When the 736 players are selected for the 32 squads at Germany 2006, FIFAworldcup.com will create a voting form for the public to register their choices once the tournament kicks off. Football fans from all over the world will then be able choose the young player they feel has left the biggest impression on Germany 2006.

Lahm was born in '83...

end of discussion

well, i think Lahm presented himself during the wc and i guess some more people know him now :) cause there are already some offers from different clubs

And RIBERY?Where do they put him?????

he is already one of the best DLs and not only in Europe. and it's especially great to see him back after a terrible injury that he suffered 1,5-2 years ago (he broke his leg if i'm not wrong)

he will be a key player for the Nationalelf and Bayern in the next 5-6 years ( i can't see Bayern selling him to abroad)

T.Barnetta was nominee, but I think that Frank Ribéry deserved it more!

Well' date=' like Ondes Martenot said, he's too old to be qualified![/quote']

owwwwwww....Yes thanks! I had to read better!

Excuse me!

Aucun problème! :D

C'est cool, tu parles français!

Seulement un peu ;)

C'est très bien, tu es meilleur en français que moi en anglais!

oh i didnt realize Lahm and Ribery both turn 23 this year! Lahm looks so young for his age, while Ribery so old!

Yeah, I agree, I was shocked when I heard that Ribery is that young.. He looks much older and.. sorry to say that, but he's definitely the ugliest player in this World Cup :P
