The Oasis Thread

Back in fine form

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FIERCE loyalty from their fans and matured professionalism from Oasis overcame early technical hiccups during the band's triumphant return to Sydney last night. Manchester brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher and their musical cohorts delivered a stirring set which was more about communal rapture than rock star posturing.

But Liam's hand-on-crotch stance, which he maintained for the length of the concert, was a tad perplexing - as was the tambourine-on-head balancing act.

The band opened with a run of songs from their latest album, Don't Believe The Truth, including Turn Up The Sun and Lyla, during which Liam's microphone appeared not to be working.

After the sound problems, the crowd went from simply enjoying the show to a full scream-along session as Oasis dipped into early hits, including Wonderwall, Champagne Supernova and Live Forever.

The energy did not cease during the brief wait for an encore before Noel delivered the night's highlight.

Cheekily dedicating the song to the Australian cricket, rugby and soccer teams, he started the anthemic Don't Look Back In Anger and the capacity crowd sang the roof off.

Oasis play a second gig at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney tonight.

Oasis set to star in Easter spectacular

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Noel Gallagher RELIGION and rock have never mixed that well, but the BBC is hoping to change all that with a spectacular live televised event in Manchester this Easter.

Manchester Passion will be a huge public spectacle, with streets closed to traffic as a Good Friday procession makes its way through the city centre with the promise of music by major Manchester bands being involved in the parade behind a huge crucifix.

It's the BBC's follow-up to award-winning public opera event Flashmob that caused a stir in London and Sheffield, and will be produced by the same TV team.

TV bosses hope "major artists" will be involved in the contemporary retelling of the last few hours in the life of Jesus - and are targeting the likes of Oasis, New Order, The Hollies and ex-members of 10CC.

Spectacle

"It should be an amazing public spectacle," predicts outgoing BBC3 controller Stuart Murphy.

"We plan to tell the story of the crucifixion in a way that is a lot more modern. It will involve lots of crowds and an enormous cross - and, hopefully, a lot of big names."

The event, to be screened live on Good Friday evening, will mix the words of the Bible with versions of popular songs by Manchester bands from the last 30 years - perhaps the likes of Stone Roses' classic I Am The Ressurrection would be fitting.

Explained a BBC spokeswoman: "The music will be given a vibrant new twist and is performed by the characters in the drama, accompanied by a string band and well-known local musicians. It takes its inspiration from the way Bach and other composers fused music and the Passion story."

The digital channel won a Golden Rose award for Flashmob - The Opera, which staged a contemporary opera on the busy concourse at London's Paddington station in October 2004, including a 62-piece orchestra, choir of singing policemen and chorus of football fans.

A second event was staged last April at the Meadowhall shopping centre in Sheffield, involving professional performers, local schoolchildren and other members of the community.

The public will be encouraged to join the Manchester procession, which will pass through several streets before ending up in Albert Square.

BBC Commissioning Editor for Arts, Music and Religion Adam Kemp says: "We are excited by the possibility of introducing a new audience to the rich history of the Passion Plays.

"We're looking forward to involving the people of Manchester in this moving live event and hopefully encouraging them to look on familiar songs with fresh eyes."

I love oasis' date=' but I really hate it when they slam other bands publicly. I hate when any band does that. Yea noel, you're in a great band, but dont criticize every other band that you dont happen to like. Keep your opinions to yourself.[/quote']

Why should he? Because you don`t agree with them? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and voicing them is what freedom of speech is all about.

I happen to think he maybe has a point, sure, some of the song s are catchy, for example, I love Kaiser Chiefs "Modern Way" but as a band they are nothing special.

Then again, I don`t think anything from this century can compare to 90`s, when britpop etc was happening, that was the best time to be into british music.

Then again, that`s just my opinion, and surely people will disagree with me, but that doesn`t mean I shouldn`t talk about it does it?

Actually, I agree with him about some of the bands. I just dont like it when great bands like oasis start slamming other bands. Its just not a nice thing to do. I'm not saying they should keep all their opinions to theirselves, just the ones that bash other bands for no reason. Its just that most of the things noel and liam bash bands for are unprovoked. What did they do to you noel? Nothing. They can have their opinions, and tell them to everyone, but how would you feel if you were in one of these bands and oasis...freaking oasis was saying you suck. Talk about a blow. Just think about it.

Oasis to topple Madonna from top spot ?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oasis are reportedly outselling Madonna this week and are set to knock ‘Hung Up’ off the top of the charts.

If the Mancunians manage to claim the top spot with ‘Let There Be Love’, it will be their third consecutive number one from ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’.

It would also be their ninth number one putting them on a par with such musical greats as Abba and The Spice Girls.

However, apart from Madge, the Gallaghers have also got the lovely Pussycat Dolls breathing down their necks.

Oasis beats U2, says Noel Gallagher

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OASIS guitarist Noel Gallagher has declared that his band is better than U2 and Coldplay.

And he insists the other bands know it.

"They know that we s--- over them," Gallagher said yesterday on the eve of the British band's sold-out Festival Hall show.

"We've got two guitarists in our band. They've only got two between them. End of story.

"Me, Chris Martin (Coldplay) and Bono (U2) have a friendly rivalry. Not that we're in some celebrity club, but I do talk to them on a regular basis and they know we're the bollocks.

"They were on their hands and knees begging us to play Live8. It wasn't a big enough show for us."

Oasis has had a remarkable comeback this year. Next week its new album Don't Believe the Truth is set to be the band's third consecutive British No. 1 this year with the Noel and Liam Gallagher duet Let There Be Love.

"Coldplay and U2 haven't had three No. 1s in a row," Gallagher joked. "Coldplay haven't had any No. 1s in the UK, actually."

Gallagher scoffed at rumours he's feuding with brother Liam after an incident in Brisbane.

"It's bollocks," Gallagher said. "It's quite preposterous. Things are fine."

Gallagher is a fan of Australia. "I'd move here if it wasn't so far away. It's like America weather-wise, but it's not full of fat idiots," he said.

Oasis's final Melbourne show is at Festival Hall tonight.

Well lets face it, most bands return fire when Oasis start the salgging, simply because they get alot more puplicity when the Gallaghers start flinging the shit around, so don`t feel sorry for them, the more the Gallaghers go on about them, the more people that hate Oasis will give these bands a chance.

I personally think Oasis isn't as great as everyone says. I honestly did try to get into them and listened to them with an open mind, but unfortunately they have only two good songs: Wonderwall and Morning Glory. And they truly are extremely cokcy bastards.....well the two brothers anyway.

Oasis are dead. They've been dead for almost a decade. Even the Rolling Stones have more life in their music right now. And they've been makng music since the Beatles.

Odd that a "dead" band can continue to be putting out number 1 albums and singles in the UK (as well as other parts of the world) I'm curious as to what songs you listened to in order to judge they only have two good songs (especially since Live Forever didn't make your list of two good songs which even most non Oasis fans seem to like) I'm not bashing on your opinion as you're welcome to it and nothing I say is gonna change it. I'm just curious how you came to your decision.

Oasis and Pussycat Dolls are fighting for No.1 spot today, with both on 27K sales, weve already had one injustice this year with the whole crazy frog shananigans, lets not have another, if you haven`t got it already, go buy "Let There Be Love" on any format, it all counts, even the 79p download from here:-

http://www.7digital.com/stores/productDetail.aspx?shop=77&product=20550&sid=263343

Ive just done that, so that means I now have the cd single, DVD, and digital download.

People say the charts don`t matter, and they are right, but for the lads to have 3 No.1 singles back to back from the same album would be amazing, what`s the alternative? Pussy Cat Dolls.

Oasis track crowned best of the year 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coldplay have cemented their position as Britain's biggest band, with their album X&Y named the best of 2005.

The recording, which went straight to number one in 28 countries and became the second fastest-selling album in British history after its release in June, was given the award by Q magazine.

Runner-up was Demon Days by Gorillaz, the second-album from the cartoon-hip hop group createdby Damon Albarn of Blur.

Kaiser Chiefs were third with their debut album, Employment, which has sold 2.5 million copies since March.

The Leeds g roup exploded onto the music scene this year with the re-release of a demo single-Oh My God, and went on to perform at Glastonbury and Live8 in Philadelphia.

Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson said: "I'm actually dead chuffed. I would have hoped it would have been in there to be honest - which I know sounds arrogant, but then being in a rock band you have to be arrogant, don't you?

"Glastonbury was a big turning point for us - the first show I didn't get nervous at and the first show I really thought we proved ourselves to everyone that we were contenders, a lot more than just eyeliner and blazers."

Fourth place went to Oasis's Don't Believe The Truth, which Q said was "their most vital since the Britpop glory days".

In fifth place was I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning by the little-known American band Bright Eyes. The top female artist in the list of 50 top albums was Scottish newcomer KT Tunstall for Eye To The Telescope.

Meanwhile, the Oasis return to form was confirmed with their single The Importance Of Being Idle at the top of Q's 100 Greatest Tracks Of The Year, which were voted for by the magazine's readers. The song topped the singles charts in August. Coldplay's Fix You was in second place and the Kaiser Chiefs took the third and fourth spots with I Predict A Riot and Oh My God respectively.

Welsh concert will be emotional one

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHEN Oasis take to the stage in Wales on Saturday, there'll be one Welsh voice cheering louder than all the rest - Ebbw Vale-born Marcus Russell, their manager and friend.

The softly-spoken former school teacher, also chief executive of Ebbw Vale RFC, has been managing the band for the past 12 years.

And despite having toured all over the world with the Gallagher brothers, the Noise and Confusion gig at the Millennium Stadium is the one that means the most.

Marcus, 45, said: "It's going to be a big day for everyone.

"Obviously I'm really pleased, coming from South Wales there's no greater venue for the band to play.

"Liam and Noel have been very keen to play at the stadium ever since it became available. This is the first real opportunity they've had to do it, the first time it has fit in with our touring schedule.

"It's great for them because it's fulfilling an ambition.

"They have never been in the stadium before. Everyone knows they're huge football fans but they've never even caught a game at Cardiff so this will be something incredibly special.

"People who've been there keep telling them the atmosphere and noise in there, with the roof on, is incredible. It'll be an emotional, fantastic night."

Marcus played a pivotal role in Oasis conquering both the UK and America.

But despite his globetrotting - he boards almost as many planes for far-off destinations as Liam and Noel now - his heart remains in Wales.

Speaking from Australia as the Gallaghers left the stage in Melbourne this week, he said: "I was actually at the stadium for the Wales v Australia game last weekend, just before flying to Australia to join the boys on tour.

"I've lost count of the number of games I've seen at the stadium but, strangely enough, I've never seen a concert there so next weekend will be a new experience for me too.

"I'm back and fore to Wales a lot because my family are still here. I probably make it back around twice a month."

In an amazing comeback year, Oasis have played 77 sell-out gigs around the world - from the UK, to Europe, Japan, America and Australia.

Their album, Don't Believe The Truth, which went straight to number one in the UK and Japan when it was released at the end of May, has already spawned two number one singles in the form of Lyla and The Importance Of Being Idle.

And with Scottish and Irish sell-out gigs taking them right up until December 22, a European tour planned for January and February next year, and Let There Be Love looking set to chart high in the singles chart this week, it seems there's no rest for Oasis or Marcus.

He says: "I think you can safely say 2005 is the best year we've ever had. We're just loving it. It has been a very successful year. The boys have a very good work ethic. They're still working hard."

So are the once-brawling brothers now all grown up?

"Yes. And I'm sure their families will be in Cardiff next weekend to support them.

"I think, if anything, they appreciate what they have got and where they are, as artists and individuals, now more than ever.

"And they definitely appreciate the fans. So getting out there and performing has been excellent."

As for Marcus, music has been a part of his life from his early teens, when he remembers his brother bringing home Rolling Stones singles.

He first left Ebbw Vale in 1975 to study education at Middlesex Polytechnic. While there he promoted several punk bands and even staged a show for the Sex Pistols.

When he finished college he settled with his wife in Essex, where he took up a teaching job. But when they split years later, disillusioned with teaching, he drifted into management with Eighties hopefuls Latin Quarter.

When the Smiths split in 1987 he managed guitarist Johnny Marr. And then he saw Oasis.

But his monumental success doesn't mean he's neglected Wales' music industry.

He said: "Oasis recorded their first two albums in Wales. The massive album, What's The Story, Morning Glory? was recorded at Rockfield and we've recorded at Caerleon and Monnow. But the boys have not been back to Wales since then.

"In January and February we are touring Europe and the band have invited the Stereophonics to tour with them. They've never played with them before so that looks set to be a great tour.

"The Super Furry Animals have also been with us for the big UK stadium gigs we did back in June.

"And there was a good relationship with the Manic Street Preachers.

"I don't think it's a conscious decision to keep the Wales connection but over the years everyone gets to know each other. Plus, you know, there are good bands in Wales and all of those who become successful deserve a place on the big stage.

the pussycat dolls at number 1 instead of Oasis, another sad day in modern music.

Noel pays tribute to Best

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OASIS star Noel Gallagher has paid George Best the ultimate compliment - saying the soccer legend was cool enough to be in the band.

Guitarist Noel, 38, said: "Georgie transcended football. He was called the fifth Beatle and he looked cool as f***.

"He owned a nightclub and a clothes shop, drove a Ferrari and he shagged Miss World."

Asked whether George was cool enough to be in Oasis, Noel replied: "The only thing he didn't do in his life that was cool was play music, and he probably would have been good at that, too."

Noel - a staunch Manchester City supporter - became pals with George after meeting at a charity function. They remained in contact after the Manchester United icon was diagnosed with liver disease.

Noel and his ex-wife Meg Mathews sent flowers in 2000 when George was taken to hospital for tests on his liver. He later had a transplant.

Noel missed George's Belfast funeral on Saturday due to tour commitments in Australia.

I don't know. Oasis are definitely the kind of band I would like. I heard live forever, cigarettes and alcohol, stand by me, the importance of being idle, lyla, rock and roll star, and a few others. But none of them I really liked that much aside from the other two. It all sounds really hazy and annoying. But I guess if you guys can see beyond all that, maybe they do have some talent. But in my opinion, they're really overrated and if anything, their sophomore album was somewhat of a fluke.
