To rez or not to rez...

Featured Replies

THAT is the question.

OK, i've been accepted to Carleton University, and I know I'm going there. I just have to decide if I should go into residence first year or not. Carleton is in my hometown, so I could stay home if I wanted to.

If I go to rez:

-I pay an extra $3000

-I'm pretty much stuck with a roommate

-I don't get my parents' old car

-I get to experience rez life, and meet new people

If I don't go to rez:

-I save a lot of money.

-I buy my mom's old car for $1000 and its pretty much mine

-I get the privacy of my own room

-I get to deal with my annoying 15 year old sister

-I miss out on most social events

You should probably know I'm going into Electrical Engineering, so the work and study habits are affecting my decision a bit.

So who here has gone into residence? what are your stories?

i guess it all depends on how comfortable your are living at home. it sucks having a roommate, even if you're good friends with him, because you get no privacy at all. but it's nice to live around friends and be away from your parents and all. for me it would be an easy decision because i get little to no privacy when i'm with my parents anyway, plus i have a lot of... uh.... issues with my dad.

in conclusion, live off-campus. :P

sorry i can't really help any.

no, thanks tom. every opinion helps. :)

yes you should because despite the niggles of living with people ultimately you will have a community around you which will give you some of your best memories when you look back :)

Hey Kyle!! hehehe...anyways, um, i would say Rez it. The reason being that my sister didn't do rez, she commuted everyday and she missed out on so many things. I was always one to believe that rez was essential in fully experiencing everything. However, if it was up to my parents, i would be living at home. hehehe...

What are your parents leaning towards? :)

Sweet One, my parents are fine either way. i think my mom is leaning towards rez, but my dad didnt do rez, so i think he's partial to staying at home.

whatever happens, im moving out by 3rd year.

Well, that's good then. I think the whole aspect of being away from your parents gives you a sense of independence- whether you're in res or not. Is an apartment in Ottawa cheaper than res? :)

umm, probably not. but its close. Ottawa has a big-time housing crunch right now. its tough to find a place. you know, i think im pretty much sure that ill go into rez now. whats funny is that if i had gotten accepted to queens or toronto, i realize id be going into rez no matter what. at least that im going to carleton gives me the chance to take a weekend off here and there if it gets too crazy on my rez floor.

with me, i made the best friends in my halls of residence... i voted yes

That is very true!! Having the ability to get away from the school atmosphere is great! That's why i wanna live off-campus. It's cheaper (montreal's housing market is insane, toronto is MAD expensive next to it) and i'll have the chance to separate myself from it if i want.

It'll be a big change, moving straight from home to your own apartment. I consider res as a transition. you have to live on your own, but you still get meals made for you.

unless of course you're already independent. :-o

and phil, simon and amanda, thanks for your opinion. :)

Kyle, i'm very independent. I can cook for myself and do my own laundry. I do everything for myself and have been doing it for a while. :)

im here.

(and i dont cook much. or do a lot of laundry. im not independent. )

then it's gonna be good for you! AND you can bring your laundry home to your mama ;) :D

Hey Ky, I totally think you should go into rez. Yeah there might be some drawbacks by having a roomate but it's a great learning experience and even though some thing might suck about it, it'll teach you a lot. And the ultimate worse case scenario is go to rez first year, and move home second year.

But definitely rez if you can. :D

hehehe...well, i guess it's good that despite being on rez, you'll still be relatively close to home..hahaha

If i need any help in montreal, i've got my big brother there, so it's all good. :)

so he can come and beat up all the guys who are hitting on you...? :D

That's what he said too!! hahaha..come to think of it, they're may be some downsides to having him there.. :P

hehe... aaawww at least you're protacted  :) is he looking out for you?

Yeah, he looks out for me....my parents told him he had to.
