Mascherano in Kop cock-up

By STEVE BRENNER

February 09, 2007

JAVIER MASCHERANO has put his foot in it before he has even kicked a ball for Liverpool — by insisting he cannot wait to become a Red Devil.

The Argentine midfielder is still seeking clearance to make his Anfield debut, having ended his nightmare stay at West Ham on deadline day last week.

But while Mascherano is kicking his heels, perhaps he should swot up on his new club — as he referred to the Kop kings as the Red Devils, the nickname of bitter rivals Manchester United.

He said: “I have disconnected myself from West Ham and signed a contract with Liverpool.

“I can consider myself a Red Devil. It’s now just up to the Premier League to authorise me to play, something I believe should happen because it was they who made the appeal to FIFA to allow me to move clubs. I hope the situation is resolved as soon as possible.”

The 22-year-old midfielder is desperate to get going in England after a disastrous spell at Upton Park.

And he reckons chatting with Reds boss Rafa Benitez — a fellow Spanish-speaker more than did the trick.

He added: “I spoke to Benitez in Spanish and I must admit it was helpful speaking the same language.

“Benitez asked me if I wanted to stay in England or if I’d prefer to go elsewhere. When I told him I wanted to play this football and prove that I can adapt to it, he fought to sign me.”

Didn't you draw again at West Brom?

You got to get winning again, 2nd to 8th in the championship is only 4 points in it.

Man Utd names operating officer

Football club Manchester United has appointed its first chief operating officer, with day-to-day responsibility for operations at Old Trafford.

Michael Bolingbroke, 41, will take care of finance, IT, human resources, and legal and property services, taking up the post in May 2007.

He will also generate revenue through the use of Old Trafford as a conference and event centre, as well as matches.

Soccer issues, governance and strategy will remain with CEO David Gill.

Mr Gill said: "His experience and ability will help drive Manchester United forward off the field."

The appointment means the board of Manchester United will now be joint chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer, Mr Gill, Mr Bolingbroke, and Bryan Glazer, Darcie Glazer, Edward Glazer, and Kevin Glazer.

A new commercial director will be appointed to the Board shortly.

Earlier this month, the Deloitte's Football Money League showed Manchester United had dropped from second to fourth in the list of the world's wealthiest clubs, trailing Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus.

Deloitte's figures take into account income from ticket sales, merchandising and broadcasting contracts, but do not include transfer revenues and do not calculate profitability.

AKA, Man Utd isn't a football club anymore, it is a business.

Look who's back:

Mandaric seals Leicester takeover

Former Portsmouth owner Milan Mandaric has completed his takeover of Leicester after the Foxes' shareholders accepted his offer for the Championship outfit.

Mandaric would not reveal how much he has paid for Leicester but says he is aiming to take the club back into the Premiership within three years.

The 68-year-old said: "It will be hard work but this is a great opportunity."

Mandaric also vowed to stand by manager Rob Kelly, although he admitted talking to Iain Dowie about the job.

Fulham 1-2 Man Utd

_42609777_giggs203.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a dramatic - and scarcely deserved - late winner as Manchester United moved nine points clear at the top of the Premiership.

Brian McBride put Fulham ahead after Nemaja Vidic and Edwin van der Sar failed to clear the ball before Ryan Giggs volleyed United level.

Van der Sar twice saved from Simon Davies and Tomasz Radzinski hit the crossbar as Fulham pressed forward.

But Ronaldo cut in from the left before drilling home his deflected winner.

The goal was Ronaldo's 16th of the Premiership season and extremely harsh on Fulham, who played most of the better football only to succumb to the Portuguese winger's individual moment of brilliance.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson jumped up and down at the final whistle - a clear illustration of how much the victory meant to him.

The visiting team had started poorly, while Fulham, deploying a diamond formation in midfield, set about their task with enthusiasm.

Vladimir Smertin shot wide, a Davies cross had Van der Sar scrambling and the Dutch keeper saved from Papa Bouba Diop before McBride struck.

Ferguson had dropped Gary Neville in favour of Wes Brown in an attempt to counter Fulham's aerial threat.

But the United defence made an uncertain start to the game and it was more uncharacteristic hesitation that led to Fulham's opener.

Vidic should have hooked clear a ball over the top as Davies chased him down.

Van der Sar charged out of goal but, close to colliding with Vidic, made minimal contact.

McBride seized on the chance, his low shot hitting the post and rolling into the net, despite Rio Ferdinand's last-ditch attempt to clear the ball.

Shortly afterwards more ragged play led to Van der Sar almost falling over as he tried to control a backpass, the Dutch keeper just clearing the ball as Radzinski closed in.

Ronaldo missed by inches with a strike across goal as the visiting team finally showed some cohesion.

And it was a precise move that led to Giggs' brilliant volleyed equaliser, the skipper striking the ball back across goal and into the bottom corner.

Despite restoring parity, United might have gone into the break a man down but Rio Ferdinand escaped with a yellow card after putting his hands around Radzinski's neck.

Fulham continued to push forward in the second half and Van der Sar came to United's rescue after 49 minutes with a brilliant one-handed save after Davies showed great skill with a volleyed strike on the turn.

Radzinski should have converted a Michael Brown cross but headed against the crossbar and Van der Sar made another brilliant save from Davies.

United's keeper came to his team's rescue again, denying McBride, before Ronaldo struck with his late winner, which clipped Phillipe Christanval on its way to goal.

Fulham appealed for a penalty seconds after Ronaldo scored, when Van der Sar tangled with Heidar Helguson, but the referee waved play on.

^Chelski must be worried after that result. The end is nigh.........................

I think maybe another couple of weeks of being 6-9 points behind Utd, Chelski's Champs League quest might be stronger as a result of resting players in Premiership games
