i got some money as a present for christmas, and i'd like to spend them smartly

I voted for the Smiths, but If you're an audiophile, which it seems you are, you should pick up Marquee Moon. It's one of those touch-stones in Alt-Rock history...sort of the OK Computer of its time. They're both amazing! Glad I don't have to choose!

I was listening to Neil YOung at a party last night. Half the people wanted it on, half the people wanted it off. He is pretty amazing. His greatest hits cd is a good place to start. I need to buy that one at some point.

The Smiths' debut album is wonderful, obviously, but I voted Eels.

 

Eels is a fabulous band, that I discovered lately, and really love. But if you have the choice, perhaps Electro-Shock Blues or Blinking Lights And Other Revelations are even better than Daisies Of The Galaxy.
