Quotes:

Eyes Open is composed of broad' date=' obvious songs with broad, obvious hooks, aimed straight for the hearts of as many people as the band can manage. All of this would be bad, horrible even, if it didn't work. But it does.[/quote']

If Eyes Open lacks the vivacity of its breakthrough predecessor' date=' it remains an assured example of a band still paying more than lip service to the notion of rock music as a vital pop form.[/quote']

Snow Patrol's hungry rock sound only gets bigger and better this time around.

Eyes Open is far from a horrible album. It’s easy to listen to' date=' it’s melodic, and it’s well-read. But you’re a strong (or naïve) listener if you can get past the calculation, the number-crunching, the crassness with which Lightbody has taken aim at the MySpace demographic.[/quote']

Eyes Open dives headfirst into mainstream waters' date=' hoping the strength of its intentions will be visible through the glossy bombast. It is, but it takes some surface-scratching to reach it.[/quote']

Eyes Open hardly furthers Snow Patrol's rote one guitar attack' date=' and repetition exposes Lightbody's interpretations of love's little hiccups as a tiring experience.[/quote']

Over 45 minutes' date=' it feels monotonous and preposterously self-pitying, but in controlled doses, it bests all the rest of the U.K.'s current wave of post-Coldplay bedwetters.[/quote']

I so much prefer Final Straw to Eyes Open. They really sold out with the 4th album to appeal more to the masses (and it worked).

Quotes:

Black Holes and Revelations is probably the least restrained album of 2006' date=' which for some is a blessing, for others a pretentious annoyance. It is, however, a focused album.[/quote']

This is the band's most autopiloted effort yet' date=' a hacked-up last-gen rehash of said space jams, only now with greater emphasis on glitz and glam. Somehow Muse, always loveably lame, have managed to take a turn for the lamer.[/quote']

Muse impresses' date=' and continues to impress on Black Holes, not only because they have the Romantic classical harmony-fueled huge stadium sound down pat, but in the details that show a band mature and talented.[/quote']

The work of three individuals arriving at the peak of their powers' date=' it’s likely to be the band’s OK Computer, their Music For The Jilted Generation, their Dark Side Of The Moon – the record that everything they produce subsequently is immediately unfairly rated against, ‘til time’s own sands sit still.[/quote']

Unfortunately' date=' it seems the group is more interested in refining, rather than re-defining, their craft, whose torpid mechanics bear no mystery, no guts behind all that glamour.[/quote']

Muse have made a ridiculous' date=' overblown, ambitious and utterly brilliant album, with more thrills than their previous three put together.[/quote']

That’s not to say the album is a disappointment (it isn’t) or not great (it is' date=' mostly), but after hitting their creative and commercial peak with Absolution and its subsequent breakthrough stateside, Black Holes and Revelations clearly reveals itself to be a transition record.[/quote']

Haha great job as always, Nikky boy

Yep, everybody say Thank you to Nik for running this album of the year contest.

The result wasn't really that surprising relating to the nature of the music fans on this forum, but it was a good read :D

Cheers Nik :)

welcome guys! :)

hope to make this list next year, as well. with more votes, of course ;)

that was great Nik!

thanks. too bad there are so many disapointments on the list.

it makes me feel kinda arogant by willing for this forum to finally have some kinda of wider listening.

dont know. i couldnt even force myself to listen muse's BH's.

as for Thom...i think it worked out cus its kinda a mellow version if RH that you get use to much quicker than to RH and that's the main reason why not many ppl here like RH or think Coldplay is miles infront of them. the second explination seems to fit better these last couple of days.

thank you very much Nik - that contest was great :nice: :cheesy:

GO THOM YORKE!

vbmenu_register("postmenu_1939690", true); dajrekshn I agree with you, Radiohead takes a lot of getting used to, and some people don't really want to commit to trying to get used to them... and then they miss out on an awesome band.

YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!

I had an idea.

How about a "Best of 2006: The Banned Albums", which will include just the banned albums, Greatest Hits, Best-Ofs, Live Albums, Remix albums, re-issues.

But writing it now, it doesn't look to be a good idea, so please ignore me.

I think it would be a good idea.

The list would be clearer.

There just wouldn't be that many choices.
