Hurricane-force winds of more than 120km/h (74mph) are battering Germany and have forced the cancellation of dozens of flights.

German forecasters have advised people to stay indoors. Schools across Germany have suspended classes for the day.

The weather system is moving across western states and is expected to reach Berlin by Thursday evening.

German radio says more than 40,000 volunteers are on standby, as widespread damage is expected.

Germany's national rail company Deutsche Bahn has reduced the maximum speed of intercity trains to ordered 200km/h (124mph) - 100km/h slower than usual.

Huge waves pound the port of Wimereux, northern France

In pictures: Europe lashed

Britain and northern France have also been lashed by the storm.

A British container ship was listing in the English Channel almost 50 miles (80km) off Cornwall. All 26 crew of the MSC Napoli had abandoned ship and taken to liferafts.

The wind has whipped up waves to a height of nine metres (30ft), German media report.

Low-lying areas of northern Germany are preparing for possible flooding.

how bad is it in other countries?I read that Germany was/is one of the worse affected countries.......here in my area the storm is strong but not as strong as in the northern part of the country.....:\

many TV stations are talking about it in special shows.....wow....

oh dear. :stunned:

switzerland is affected as well but its not that bad over here.

Well it's considered to be so dangerous one of my classes has been cancelled this evening!!:stunned:

I hope it wont be as bad. All the students in Berlin had to go home earlier and well, I didnt go to the gym because of the storm but right now its not too bad. At least where I live.

Yeah, all pupils and students in Lower Saxony, Bremen and Hamburg had to leave schools and universities at 11:30am. Personally I was very amused, because I normally had to stay until 03:30pm. :D

But it's indeed one of the worst storms I've ever seen. All trains have stopped now, nobody can't go home. It's horrible! We had a very heavy thunderstorm in the afternoon. 15 minutes later there were no clouds in the sky... I so hope we'll not get a big storm tide at midnight.

Nearly every TV station here has special news with the latest information and new pictures of damages.

NDR 2 just say that the water will become 5,10 m higher than the normal high tide at 4:00am. That's a disaster! A lot of areas in Hamburg will be evacuate at 1:00am.

here we have a pretty strong wind at the moment

the forecasts say it can get worse...

well,.....we didn't have electricity for 2 and a half hours yetserday...because of the storm......weeeee that was scaring but funny at the same time......

wow and so many streets were blocked because of trees.....

was pretty... erm... well...different.

the weather is going crazy. absolutely crazy.

it's freakin warm outside now and the sun is shining...

Fortunately the storm tide wasn't as bad as expected to be last night.

I went to the dike at 11pm and there were standing a lot of people looking to the water and everyone was calm. You only heard the wind and the waves. It was a bit spooky if I'm honest...

Today you could see a lot of damages. Traffic-lights didn't work, neighbours of one of my friends lost their roof and another friend had to sleep in the main train station of Bremen, because all trains have been stopped last night.

Now we'll get a lot of snow next week... Crazy weather!

I heard that they even had 25°C(!!!!) in the south of Switzerland today.....:uhoh:

Damn that Kyrill :(

No real damage around here, apart from the verges of a country lane I found out to be very soft when pulling over for a fucking BMX X5 because the driver was a dick-head and didn't want to get his 4*4 dirty, so I lost all traction on the left hand front wheel, which meant the wheel flying up lots of mud and ripping off my mud-flap :(

yes and this is what happened at the newest train station in Germany in Berlin....ouch:sick:

well obviously this can happen.....they said it on TV in the weather news....wow that's so crazy....:freak:

That's like the same temperature as here in July...

Haha, i wonder what the weather will be like next year..or in 10 years

the weather all over the world is going crazy

even in the US, one moment its 70 degrees all over the country (more than useasonably warm) and the next, the midwest is being LASHED with huge ice and snow storms so bad that 50 to 60 people have died. And all that is happening while the rest of the country is having crazy warm weather.

its absolutely insane.

i want some of that snow!!!!!!!!!!!1:veryangry:

i'm just wondering where are the Republicans with their "there's no climate change" theory???

Its stupid to say that there's nothing wrong with the weather. Even here we don't use the heating anymore.

Maybe I'm never going to see snow :(

yea well see they pick and choose when they want to be for and against science. They are against stem cell research (science) but then they are all for science when it comes to global warming. Sure i agree the earch naturally heats and cools itself, but that isnt the issue, that normally happens over MILLIONS of years, not 4 or 5! and look at this past two years compared to 10 years ago!! its rediculous to think that our load of shit we do to the earth has NO effect on the environment.
