Britney Spears' former husband Kevin Federline has been given sole custody of the couple's two children. The court ruling came a day police came to Spears' house, when she refused to return the children after a court-monitored visit.

Federline, 26, who did not appear in court, already had temporary custody of two-year-old Sean Preston and one-year-old Jayden James.

Another court hearing has been set for 14 January.

"I'm not happy about any of these events," said Federline's lawyer, Mark Kaplan, after the hearing in Los Angeles.

"There's no winners here."

'Breakdown'

Police were called to Spears' home at 2000 on Thursday (0400 GMT Friday) over a family custodial dispute that they tried to resolve "peacefully by court order", police officer Jason Lee told the BBC.

After nearly three hours, Spears reportedly handed over her children.

It is reported that police found the singer under the influence of an unknown substance, and she was taken to hospital for medical evaluation.

Local TV reports showed police at Spears's hilltop mansion and pictures which apparently showed her being taken out of the house on a stretcher, the BBC's David Willis reports.

The singer was not arrested, and "there was no actual crime", a police spokeswoman said.

The pop star's lawyers filed a court motion earlier this week asking to be relieved as her representatives due to a "breakdown" in communication.

Spears and Federline were married in September 2004 and divorced in July 2007.

Hit "Report Post" if that spambot makes a comeback. Sometimes the mods can miss things.

I thought I'd offer my $.02.

I think she might have some guilt about having gone the route she's gone. The fake breasts and the fake music.

Add in the fact that she's a celebrity, and gets lots of exposure. I suppose I'm just speculating, but if she wasn't happy with those choices, and then throw in the fact that she's exposed as if she is successful and should be happy, well that could be a double whammy. She may have thought "Well, they are acting and treating me like I should be happy, but I'm not.." I don't know if I'm making any sense or not..

Then when she starts sliding, they (the media) start exploiting her for some of the behavior she displays and that makes it even worse. Horrible.

Britney Spears angers northern fans as she yells 'what's up London?' at her Manchester gig

She had driven 200 miles from London to get there. But when Britney Spears greeted the audience at her Manchester show last night it was clear she had absolutely no idea where she was.

'What's up London?' she yelled to the stunned fans gathered at the MEN arena - the only gig outside the capital on her Circus tour.

Perhaps making a rare departure from her lip-syncing script was too much for her. Or maybe an earlier stop-off at McDonald's on the journey had left her feeling a little dozy.

Whatever the reason for her confusion, concertgoers were less than impressed with the 27-year-old singer's slip -up.

'If she can't tell the difference between London and Manchester what hope has she got?' asked a mother who took her 14-year-old daughter to the show.

Another was upset with Britney's decision to mime to recorded backing tracks during the tour, adding: 'People have paid to see her live, so she should sing live.'

Britney made a similar slip-up on stage in San Jose, California in April, when she shouted: 'What's up Sacramento?'

Earlier, there was a warmer reception for the singer when she popped into a suburban London McDonald's to buy her lunch on her way to Manchester.

Surrounded by bodyguards watching her every move, Britney darted into the branch at Neasden, north west London, where customers were amazed to see her. After picking up a late lunch, she jumped back into her waiting people carrier and continued on her way.

Her current stay in Britain must be doing Britney the world of good given her radiant appearance yesterday.

The singer looked tanned, toned and happy as she left her London hotel for her journey north in a pair of pink hotpants.

It appeared she was dressing for all weathers given the fact that she teamed her tiny shorts with a cosy polo-neck sweater.

Beaming at photographers as she left the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, it seemed a few days of relaxation in the capital with her sons after finishing her London run of shows on Sunday had given her a boost.

Following her performance at the MEN Arena, Britney was driven the 200 miles back to London last night.

During her time off with her boys, Britney had enjoyed showing Sean Preston, three, and Jayden James, two, a little of London. On Tuesday the family went to London Zoo and on Monday, they visited Hamley's in Regent Street where the boys were treated to some new toys.

While Britney has spent her London stay at the opulent Mandarin Oriental Hotel, which backs on to Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park, her sons are staying elsewhere with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, who is also in the capital.

Hot to trot: Britney looked radiant in a pair of pink hotpants and a white polo neck as she left her London hotel on Wednesday

He agreed to come along on the tour so that the children were not separated from their mother for too long.

Britney was even said to be paying him $4,000 a week to travel with her so she could be near them.

This week, lawyers for Spears and Federline reportedly filed documents with the U.S. family law Commissioner Scott Gordon, stating they have reached a new temporary custody arrangement.

U.S. gossip website TMZ reported that the family had agreed new custody arrangements for the tour.

Britney will have custody of her sons more than the 50 per cent of the time for the rest of June, July and August.

The tour is a family affair for Britney - who is also accompanied by her sister Jamie-Lynn and father Jamie, who is managing her affairs.

She will head to Dublin on Friday for two more shows before going to France in July to continue her high-energy tour of Europe, before more dates in North America in August.

Whatever. You're at a fucking Britney Spears gig. What the hell are you expecting? xD
