injectionREX_228x319.jpgThe Government plans to offer vaccinations to girls as young as 12

At least one in 10 girls has picked up a sexual infection linked to cancer by the age of 16, according to the Health Protection Agency.

Their study estimated that this rises to one in five girls by the age of 18. And by the age of 24, around 40 per cent will show signs of having contracted the human papillomavirus (HPV) - the virus linked to most cases of cervical cancer.

In June, the Government signalled its intention to begin vaccinating girls as young as 12 against HPV from as early as next year.

The jabs would revolutionise the approach to tackling cervical cancer, which kills more than 1,000 women in the UK each year.

However, it has proved controversial with some critics suggesting that the jab could increase promiscuity in under 16s.

But the authors of the latest study said their findings "suggest that there is already a substantial risk of HPV infection in girls in England by the age of 14."

Researchers tested blood samples from 1,483 females for types of HPV that can cause genital warts and cervical cancer. The results showed that, from the age of 14, the risk of HPV infection increased sharply.

Across all females aged 10 to 29, an average of 21 per cent are estimated to show signs of having caught at least one strain of HPV, according to the study published in the British Journal of Cancer.

Andrew Vyse, who presented the study at the HPA's annual conference in Warwick today, said: "This study gives us vital information about how common HPV infection is in young women of different ages.

"However it does have some limitations and does not give a precise estimate of infection rates in young women in England, therefore more work needs to be done."

In June, the Department of Health said it was likely girls aged 12 to 13 would receive an HPV vaccine in three doses over a six-month period at a cost of around £300 per full course.

Its agreement "in principle" to the jab followed a recommendation from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to introduce it. The jab would not be compulsory but would be offered to girls in all parts of the UK.

If a vaccination programme was introduced, smear testing would need to continue for the foreseeable future, partly because the jab does not protect against all HPV types that may cause cervical cancer.

Each year around 2,800 British women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 1,000 die from the disease. Around 200,000 women a year also have pre-cancerous changes to their cervix picked up through smear tests.

The lifetime risk of developing cervical cancer is one in 116 in the UK.

Juliet Hillier, of the sexual health charity Brook, said of the latest research: "Statistics like this demonstrate a real need to improve education and prevention programmes which target young people.

"The Government must urgently implement a vaccination programme for girls and boys before they become sexually active and ensure resource is available to do so.

"Sex and relationships education must be made a statutory part of the national curriculum."

The HPA also released a "modelling" study showing that a vaccination programme would be a cost-effective use of NHS resources if the jab protected girls against cervical cancer for at least 20 years.

Its research showed that up to 70 per cent of cases of cervical cancer and 95 per cent of cases of genital warts in men and women could be prevented by the jab.

This is in addition to the cases already prevented by the cervical cancer screening programme run by the NHS.

The team said there would need to be careful monitoring of the effectiveness of the jab to assess the true impact of a programme in the UK.

Yes because if you hurt yourself, its not your fault, its ALWAYS someone elses...

No one is ever to blame for bad thing that happen to themselves...

If i burn my hand of by playing with fire its the store who sold me the lighter who is to blame, not me being a moron. Just like if someone gets a STD, they were forced to have sex, its not their fault.

So basically the article is saying that at least 1 in 10 girls will have unprotected sex before they reach 16. I blame the current culture of teaching.

I think it's fair to say that unfortunately for us current western cultures are fundamentally set up to fail in an immoral and unattractive way. And we are witnessing the disgusting process of love deprived self-hatered & destruction everyday.

So-called celebrities are the most publicised examples of this. You all know the ones I mean.

And what do they get?

....Awards!

It's madness.

No wonder we find ourselves in this current situation. Large amounts of kids, unchecked and lacking parental direction follow the flow of the current 'trends' instead and find themselves washed up in "The Bay of 'I've Ruined My Life", all because their parents were 15-16 when they had them and still wanted to go and get wasted every weekend......just like their parents did before them.

It's a horrible cycle - they all get dumber.

Most idiotic thing I have read in ages, it's so bad it's getting a place on my signature.

And they are not called STD's anymore they are STI's for some idiotic reason.

You're to blame for your mistakes, If a guy messes up and gets a std, he's just as guilty.

Wait i forgot everything bad in life is someone else's fault, its never your fault...what a great attitude to have on life. Always blame it on someone else!

Grow up, get off the computer and realize we make mistakes and we are to blame for alot of crap that happens to us and the world, not bush, not god, not your enemey but YOU. Stop acting like a 4 yr old, realize your mistakes in life and learn from them. Every person that blames their problems on others will never grow and be stuck being a waste of life. I guess you're a waste of life, can't grow up enough to learn from your mistakes.

The biggest people in the world got there by knowiwng they mess up and learning from them, not blaming every mess on someone else. You'll always be a useless sack of shit until you realize things you do cause problems and learn from it, adapt and fix the problems. You cant change until you realize when something's your fault. Those people will keep getting std's because they think someone else is to blame, why change their habits if they didnt cause the problem? You reap what you sow.

Sorry if i used too many big words, but i'm sure you wouldnt be adult enough to understand my point so dont bother with reading this.

Animals we are disposable, collapsible and raw in you go into some crowded room...:(

mrcool011, your comment is the most pretentious, platitudinous & ostensible I have read in my recent latent memory (just who the fuck do you think you are). Not only are you arrogant, you are close-minded. Human beings are natural products (dare I say victims) of a chaotic environment, the sex obsessed media & the trappings of limited funds. Monkey sees, monkey does...

This debate is really getting on my nerves. Both the larger public one and here.

So hypothetically if a woman chooses to go the abstinence route, gets married all that stuff- ideal situation in some peoples opinion, protects from all sorts of things- and only after the wedding she finds out her husband had been sleeping around behind her back, it's then her fault if she dies of cancer years later, and it was just for her not to get the vaccine because it made sure she stayed a virgin. Of course not. On either count.

There is a problem- a potentially deadly one. Now there is a very simple solution that will help. Life and love are complicated, the world isn't divided into good girls and sluts, and I find it offensive that people are debating girls lives and health that way.

What the question should be is "how safe is this vaccine"? Now there's a much more interesing debate that's going on right now.

Interesting that everyone posting in this up till now has been a guy...

I agree. The vaccine safety issue is a very serious one.......very serious.

And obviously a certain person on here is just trying to get a rise out of everyone.......if he's not then he's seriously lost.

Plus, the language used (whore) is simply wrong and out of all context - plus his silly ignorant comments do not address any of the problems....just provoke angry reactions.

Yes, no one is to blame for their actions. It is always someone's or something elses fault. We shouldn't hold people accountable for their actions...thats just silly:rolleyes:

So if i go out and shoot 10 people because i saw it on Halo 3, it is not my fault? People will never get anywhere in life if they dont grow up and realize how the world works. Don't blame others for your problems, own up to them and fix them unless you're a fat sack of crap who will never achieve anything in life, like most humans. And the reason they do not is because they are ignorant and do not learn from their mistakes. To learn from your mistake you first must admit to making them.Sorry if i went way over your head, it was the universes fault that made me this intillegient

P.S. Close minded is lying to yourself all the time blaming your mess ups on something else. Close minded people see the world as they want to, not how it truly is, they are biased and closed minded when they think their mess ups aren't their own fault.

You're the definition of someone who is closed minded, looking at life how you want it to be and you think it should be not paying attention to how it really is. You're not the center of the universe, life does not revolve around you.

^ What prime horseshit, really.

Never in my life have I read such a terrible response.

Seriously, for somebody trying to promote his "open mindedness" you sure did I great job of proving the exact opposite.

You will never be able to win people over such arguments and I'm not even sure I am able to point out the major errors in your truly pathetic efforts in a way you would even grasp....yes, you come across as that stupid.

Might sound harsh, you might even attempt a comeback by calling it simply name calling (which is expected) - but everyone can see and read what you have written - my comments are fair.....I cannot lie.

You should feel embarrassed & slightly concerned with the way you have been taught.

Hey if you want to live in a made up world where you never do wrong, be my guest. I always knew you didnt have a good grasp on reality, never fully developed as a kid eh? But for the majority of intelligent people who have grown up they need to realize they're not perfect and make lots of mistakes.

The dog didn't eat your homework your lazy ass didnt do it.... people make excuses for their mess ups that cause them to fail again. I own up to my mistakes, fix them and move up in life. While you're on the internet making up story's about aliens invading i'll be getting my doctorate in medicine and driving a benz. There is a pattern between people who blame their mess ups on someone else and those who take the blame for it and fix it. People like you will be trash for life(and i love that) while others take action and get results. Maybe one day ill drop a dollar in your cup while you're begging on the streets you pathetic sack of shit.

Hahaha all you do is name call dude, thus proving your lack of intellect. You dont have facts to back up your points just like a 10 year old boy you call names where facts should be. Get back to reality, life isn't a game, you've watched too many movies.

what ive been taught? i've learned this through hard times in life, messing up and blaming others over and over only to get no where. Once i learned i was to blame i made the corrections and moved up in life. Have fun with your shitty life and never getting anywhere. Cant say im suprised

We aren't talking about Bart Simpson style issues here!

You probably don't even know that you are doing it - but you are trying to make me sound unreasonable by saying such ridiculous things and attempting put the idea out that I'd believe a "dog ate my homework" story - as well as every similar cartoon style excuse.

Without any reason you are trying to make it seem as if I believe that every stupid child-like excuse is correct and it's always someone elses (or the dogs!) fault....

....When in reality we were discussing a far more complex and far reaching issue.......until you waded in with all your really laughable non-sense.

you're on the internet making up story's about aliens invading

Wow, HaHa, also completely and utterly untrue. Another slanderous attempt to dis-credit!

Why are you so motivated and passionate about writting complete drivel and coming up with pure lies????....

.....that's rhetorical by the way.

Haha bart simpson would blame his problems on everyone esle...have you not seen the show....

Guess its hard to watch tv when you make up your own reality.

You really do need help, psychological help. You've created this reality where you make a boring life interesting with your fairy tales. My sister is becoming a psychologist, I'm sure she can help you. Life isn't a fairy tale that you get to make up, it sucks then you die.

I need to stop responding to you right now!...haha. You might aswell go around saying I believe that donkeys are actually the rulers of the world.

Again.....someone - give him a clue...I give up. I'm sure he's being simple on purpose....just because he finds it all a big joke.

Oh and I wish i could make up my own reality where when i mess up its not my fault. When im just a innocent victim in the world who shares no blame for what goes on. I felt that way when i was 10 years old! for crying out loud you share the same ideas with little kids. You're making reality out to be what you want not what it is. I see it how it is, even when it has a very negative affect on me. I dont view reality as how it will benefit me, but how it is even when it causes harm.

Thats the difference between you and me and half the people on here, I dont let my personal feeling get in my way on my view of reality. I take myself out of context, while you base it on what you want it to be.

In the end its the difference between succuss and failure....my success and your failure. I dont know why i care if people have the same view as you, it only helps me. It means less competition in life for succuss.;)

Oh and if you keep arguing i'll take away 10 cents from your cup every time you argue. That'll be 10 cents you cant put towards buying more drugs.

Allright, we keep on going with the same thing. I have to say that I am surprise that after all this time neither of you has yet click on the ignore list. Why not?!

Just to remind you, No personal attacks - These forums are not a place for you to take cheap shots at somebody because he/she did something. Do that some place else (or better yet, get over it). ignore feature can be implemented via your panel at http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/profile.php?do=editlist (registered members only).

Now back to topic. I agree to some extend that whatever you do it's your own fault and balbalablabla but we are talking about under age girls here who obviously don't think of the consequences, but I also agree that it's also the media's fault and it is sad that the same cycle repeats itself through out the years..and the parents.. the parents:rolleyes:

I actually did forget about the ignore list.

Thanks V!

Yeah, I too agree that people need to take responsibility for their own actions but when such a large problem is spread out amongst many, many young girls then there is obviously huge social issue.....and in this case there are very valid points that can be made about our culture & the media's role - which I have previously said here - and it's not just down to girls being "whores" as it's also been put.....which most will admit isn't the reason, it's not that simple.......or at least I don't think so.
