Visiting England - any recommendations?

Featured Replies

Great, thanks for the tip. An your first post too! I feel privileged!

And thanks to you sally. I apprecriate your suggestions, and I think a trip to Liverpool is definely on.

And Mark...thanks for spamming my thread so much, yet contributing so little!

You're welcome.:P

OK - I'll contribute something. If you visit London, definitely visit the Tower Bridge Museum. It isn't expensive, and it means you can take advantage of some fantastic views from the indoor walkways at the top. The London Eye is a must too - it's worth every penny.

A good way to do it is to travel to Tower Hill tube station, circle the Tower of London (even if you don't go inside), then walk to Tower Bridge nearby. After visiting the Tower Bridge Museum you can then finish crossing the bridge and walk along the Embankment on the other side, where there are various places of interest (including the rebuilt Globe Theatre).

Eventually you will reach the Millennium Bridge, which is worth walking across too.

St. Paul's is then within reach, but the admission price is too high IMO, so just take some photos outside.

It's also worth going to see Buckingham Palace, of course, and then walking along The Mall to Trafalgar Square. That way you can see a lot without spending too much money.;)

This place is worth visiting too, as it's quite possibly the best music venue in the world.

cheers! feel free to ask me if there is anything you're particularly interested in.

when are you planning to go?

Cool, thanks. I have been told to go to Bath, and I think Stonehenge is on the way there? Although, it's fenced in, right? You cannot get too close I hear.

I'll look into Winchester...any particular reason to go there?

Stonehenge has a rope around the path to stop people coming off the path and touching the stones.

No real reason for visiting Winchester except for it's the ancient capital of this country, and has a really nice church.

I have heard that Avebury is actually better than Stonehenge - bigger and better yes?

I think there are many castles to visit, which 1 or 2 do you recommend? I will be going the 27th until Jan 14th, but only staying in London until the 1st. That gives me 2 weeks elsewhere....!

Thank you Mark!

Where are you from and who are you travelling with?

New Zealand, and by myself! I love traveling alone best, because I get to decide where to go when.

Are you a student?

Avebury has a more random layout and is less busy as it's out of the way.

Evans Evans is a tour company that offers day trips to both. I have used them before, did the the Windsor/ Stonehenge/ Salisbury tour and Oxford tours. Check out their site if only for some ideas. The site for the London Pass is also a good tool to help plan what to see while in London. The place where you pick it up can help you with info, maps, booking any kind of trips and stuff like that.

you're probably the first person to recommend someone to come to moss side!

i guess its probably alright though. only been there once but a friend of mine used to live there and he liked it. it probably isn't as bad as it's reputation. the same goes for toxteth. its just not the kind of areas tourists would usually visit.

I recommend seeing Stonehenge, Bath & Winchester.

yeah, agree. stonehenge could be a bit disappointing for you.. i was there last year, and i was really disappointed. i was really looking forward to visiting it, but i was surprised cause it was quite small.

anyway, bath and winchester worth it too.

Just my 2 cents worth

If you`re going to be able to visit just about anywhere, why not go to Exeter/ or Devon , where Chris Martin is from?! Since he has friends and family there..never know who you may meet!;)

I would avoid the stonehedge area as from 17:00 tomorrow up-to Saturday night, due to the great escape happening.

I was joking about the areas of Manchester..

hehe

The Lakes are stunning.. ! I fell in love there once
