What do you do for a living?

Featured Replies

Hello fellow Coldplayers, I would like to know what you do for a living or for you younger types what you would like to do.

You see I am stuck in a dead end job because at 23 I STILL don't know what I want to do with my life but I need to find out really because I'm at my wits end. I figured I could steal some ideas from you :D

When I work I clean carpets.

Also I work at a Bible Camp in the summers.

Handyman - carpentry, plumbing, yardwork, etc. Some furniture refinishing in winter (a time of relative calm and starvation..).:)

over the summers i teach middle school boys elementary physics and rocketry. for the past 8 months, i worked as a receptionist at a doctor's office. i'm now a uni student.

i would really like to write novels and movies for a living, but i think i'd be relatively satisfied working in publishing or something, like being a book editor. but i'm majoring in american studies with a concentration in mass media and pop culture, so who knows where that will bring me.

Plenty of Work in Changes Ahead!

The days of great job security may be past us now.. But, I predict there will be an enormous demand for home remodeling, in order to upgrade our current houses to high efficiency standards (as energy prices will soar like never before)! Anything in this area should do well - from materials and research to installation. That, and materials recycling will boom as well, since known deposits of certain metals are limited, and demand continues to rise. Their extraction gets more and more risky, as the remaining ore bodies are in more sensitive areas of the environment - which will create a boom for replacement materials made of common earth elements (aluminum for copper, ceramics for stainless, etc.).

Research, development, and manufacturing of better solar cells, enclosures, and the like will boom as energy from oil and coal gets scarce, and the impact is fully realized. Also new automotive designs, engines, and the like should be big pretty soon - there's still enormous gains to be made in the design of vehicles.

Bioplastics, made to be earth-friendly and worker-friendly should be big as well - currently, the types of plastics we use have serious risks from beginning to end, and replacement materials will require changes in raw materials, manufacturing, and recycling.

There's always jobs in industry, as we transit from economies reliant upon fossil fuels to industries reliant upon solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass energy sources.

But the single biggest gains will be in increased efficiency. Efficiency is the 90%; everything else is the 10%. It's much, much easier to improve efficiency than it is to input more energy, and smart businesses will put a strong emphasis on this in the near future.

On a more human level, as energy prices rise, farming will grow at the local level - demand for healthier foods will prompt more organic farming practices, and since energy prices are tied to farming in many ways (from fuels to shipping to fertilizers to pesticides), organic farming will become a larger share of the food market.

Looking at textiles, most of today's are made of petroleum-based plastics, and some that are not (cotton) will jump drastically in price, as energy prices continue to rise. There should be a strong market for natural fibers, and those made from bioplastics. Since much of our homes and autos are filled with types of plastics that are hazardous to human health, it seems likely the replacement materials will have these natural sources.

Finally, the proper treatment and disposal of the wastes we generate still has to be fully addressed. Quite a lot has already been done, especially in Europe, but the rest of the world lags behind in this matter. We may even see mining of existing landfills, to recover much of the necessary metals which will be in short supply in the future.

Gads, it boggles the mind! There's technology which is constantly evolving, computer systems to be improved, water issues to be solved, cleanup of contaminated areas, green roofs, new space-age materials to store electricity, - if you like carbon science, carbon nanotubes will be bigger than ever! There's synthetic zeolites to be created and applied for various applications..

Health is a big big field as well - no doubt there will be a huge need for people in the field, as there are always care needs from A to Z.. And making it work for everyone will be a key issue. Preventive medicine should boom as well, as this makes the most sense.

IIEEE!!!:laugh3: Just pick something where there's jobs! (my personal feel is that we will need to restructure our economies, to reduce stress and improve happiness overall - focusing on better quality goods and services is one way; efficiency is another.)

Yea! I like that!! Well, life's a mix - no tires, no freedom.. but all work and no play makes John a dull boy. So, hurray for the mix!!:sunny::joker::laugh4:

umm well right now i'm a student. and i work at loblaws in the bakery. don't want to be there for my whole life.

but next year when i enter uni i'm going to study kinesiology. i'm thinking i want to go into some form of athletic therapy, maybe into some form of rehab. pretty broad right now, but hey i'm still young.

Medicine's a pretty rigorous field, but very rewarding - best of luck to you!!

my profession is high school student:rolleyes:

^^ Me too, justin. We're strugglin' with lots of exams, right??? That's hard, i think

Rocketry? that sounds really exciting. Actually. Really exciting.

it isn't too late though. i'm 22 and i started with uni this year. i was a bit unsure whether it is the right thing to do when i started because everyone on my course is like 18/19 but i guess i'll have far more opportunities after i completed the course.

I'm a High School Studie too but mum wants me to be a lawyer

I wanna be a like a director or a journalist...but the way I get money now is salvaging or saving up 'round Christmas, Birthdays and Chinese New Year!!

Oh I know. My auntie did a degree in Social Work when she was 40 and is now very happy in her job. I have been to uni but dropped out because I didn't want to waste 10 grand and 3 years studying a subject that might have nothing to do with what I want to do. If I can figure out what I want I'd be more than happy to go back to uni and do a vocational degree to get where I want to be :D

I'm uni student on Translation Department, so I really hope I'll also end up as a translator!

I'm almost 26 and in EXACTLY the same place. Don't have a job- it's getting frustrating- don't know what to do- probably the reason. Finished 2 years of a 3 year English degree and didn't go back (though I want to finish it someday, when I have money to).

So, lost, confused, and insanely lucky I have understanding parents who I get along with.

I guess I finally figured out that a big part of my problem has to do with infinite possibility. I just can't stand the idea of eliminating options that might be "my calling" or some such thing. But the logical part of my head knows that it really doesn't work like that.

What I finally did (after years of figuring all this stuff out one thing at a time) was just to figure out what my strengths and weaknesses were. I suck at customer service- like in stores, and I can't stand office work. I do enjoy working with my hands on specific projects, I like fixing things, and I like moving around and interacting with people when I don't have to sell something.

So with all that in mind, I'm planning to study electronics as soon as I can - there's a lot of good job possibilities in that trade, and I think it will be fascinating.

Anyway, I guess my whole point is don't freak out it's part of life. ;)

it IS very exciting! i love rocketry to death; i was such a little rocket nerd as a kid. but its not so exciting when i've got to pull the boys out of the classroom by their ears because theyre so obnoxious and won't listen to me (i'm rather young and don't have much physical presence). and it's not very exciting when i end up lighting myself on fire. well, that actually is exciting, just not fun. better me than the kiddies, though.

as for me being a uni student--i dont actually want to be here, i never really did. i only went to uni because it's kind of unheard of around here NOT to go, and i'm really terrified of ending up in a low-paying, dead end job that i can't live like i want to off of. i just want to get on with life, want to fast-forward through my college education and see where i end up at the end. i have no interest in going through the motions: i just want the damn degree so i can go on to the next thing, whatever that is.

I have done the same sort of job for 8 years now...

they say you only last 18 months in my job, then you burn out. (most people go on to better things)

That's a good idea, I HATE customers but unfortunately I'm in a job where I must deal with the bastards everyday. I wouldn't mind an office job, something to do with data entry, but I couldn't be doing with a 9-5. I like being able to stay up late, go to work at 2 and having days off in the middle of the week. Is hard.

What's your job Daryl?

i'm not sure what i'm gonna do after uni either. i consider becoming a teacher but i couldn't teach the subject i'm studying. i'm doing english literature at uni and no matter how well i do, english will never be my first language. i could go for german but i'm not sure because most people in britain don't seem to be interested in learning foreign languages.
