Singer Chris Martin of Coldplay turns 31 today.

 

As you know from reading this column the Lehigh Valley has always had many problems associated with excessive drinking and alcholism. And a story from 100 years ago today shows how society viewed alcholism in 1908.

 

A South Bethlehem woman who an Easton Express writer described as being well-dressed, educated and articulate was arrested on a charge of being a nuisance. In court she calmly and directly told about her fight with alcholism. She had visited a sanitarium to try to cure herself of it. But she just couldn't stay away from alcohol for a long period of time, she said. The writer of the story said it was a pitiable story. Apparently people at the time thought alcholism was associated with lack of money. But they discovered it wasn't. 50 years ago today:

1958: The founder and former chairman of Dixie Cup Co. set forth an idea to the Easton Area Chamber of Commerce that isn't new but still deserves attention, the Easton Express editors wrote.

 

Hugh Moore suggested that Easton and the small local municipalities surrounding it merge into one metropolitan municipality.

 

25 years ago today:

1983: A musician who hasn't performed in the Lehigh Valley in nearly 20 years will play at the Allentown Fair. Liberace will appear Sept. 4 for two shows.Liberace last performed at the Allentown Fair in 1965.
