Bonus_mosher
not really.... He said there wasn't a single note of falsetto. = bullshit. The whole chorus which he remembers hearing is in falsetto.
RunForTheHills
He remembered the BAM BAM BAM BAM after each chorus, though. I think he was telling the truth, personally. Thanks Locust!
bmn
I think this song is one of Coldplay's worst ones. It doesn't deserve to be a single. I don't understand why people like it so much.
Hyphin
He is definately telling the truth. Maybe he just doesn't know what a falsetto is. Cuz there is Chris singing up there in the song. But he gets the description right. Thanks Locust. And BMN. I was wondering what you disliked about Violet Hill? I personally love it. But perhaps you might think that I am predisposed to like it, and that I would never really ever seriously consider that it was bad. But I have. I was pretty much EXPECTING to dislike it, even as I pressed play on my iPod. But the truth is...its...undeniably....pure Coldplay, heart and soul. Every bit of what makes a song Coldplay is present. The heartfelt lyrics, the strong music and the lasting impression that makes you listen to it over and over and over again everyday. Absolutely the song has ADDITIONAL different aspects, but these different aspects never are used in place of what Coldplay are about, but rather try to ADD something. I personally feel that Viva la Vida is prefect. just. perfect. But I still love Violet Hill, and would love to hear how someone can dislike it. At the end of your post you said "I dont understand why people like it so much". I've just explained why I do, and I think, many people do. It's Coldplay. But New. Shed light on your reasons. :)
bmn
Violet Hill was presented as a single so I compare it to Coldplay's previous ones: Yellow, Clocks, In My Place etc. Violet Hill simply doesn't match their standarts! I think Violet Hill would be good as a B-side but not as a single. I've asked many fellow Coldplay fans and they agree that the song is below Coldplay's average. To be more specific I don't like the choir in the beginning and I don't like the new sound. >but rather try to ADD something. Why add something if everything was great before? Why not just release a new hit song without any new influences?
footyfan10
I like Coldplay's not exactly "new direction" but definitely the addition of new elements to their music. I think Violet Hill is the perfect blending of this. I can understand the dislike. It's certainly not traditional Coldplay, but I think what it retains is the things that underscore all their music - great lyrics, solid tempo, etc - I think ending it the way they did was also a masterstroke. I don't think I'd like it nearly as much without the ending, mainly because it would seem a little to different, but the end brings it all together. Great song in my opinion. manfromjapan
VIOLET HILL FIRST IMPRESSIONS I've had the new Coldplay track (from the forthcoming album, VIDA LA VIDA - OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS, out June 16th) on loop for days now. It's available as a free download from coldplay.com until May 6th, when it goes on paid download everywhere. The title refers to a beautiful hill in Hong Kong that looks out to panoramic views of the city. Apparently a rare, precious violet grows on the hill. So there you go. I suspect 'Violet Hill' has been chosen as the first single since, like 'Speed of Sound' from 'X & Y', it will effectively bridge the gap between the two albums, and give a hint of what's in store. The first thing one notices is the use of loud, distorted but playful guitars. They make the song seem fresh and experimental, and give a new mood and tone. Yes, 'Violet Hill' is a little bit of a strange beast. It's lyrics are not easy to 'get' and the structure is definitely odd. The chorus is treated as if it's an afterthought, and the song doesn't build up to it. The guitar solo is over before it begins. 'Violet Hill' is a tease of a song, and a great, smart teaser for the new LP. Both traditional Coldplay and something different. There's certainly some obvious influences here....the opening synth is pure Brian Eno (the LP's co-producer), the structure akin to Arcade Fire (an acknowledged influence on the LP) and the opening line reminds me of U2's 'Angel of Harlem'. Martin's voice sounds different. Very direct and deep. He sounds simultaneously sad and detached. He sounds very masculine, and this track alone might silence their naysayers who regard their music as 'music for bedwetters'. Oh, and the piano-led epilogue is beautiful.
