Disappointed

I'm so not into Violet Hill. I guess I'm just someone who loves the more traditional songs from the band with a softer tone. I thought it was too dark, intense, heavy and quite depressing actually. Whenever I'm feeling down, I will always listen to Coldplay on my Ipod and immediately, I feel relaxed and better! Though, with this song, it makes you feel more sad.

I understand a band wanting to expand creatively and not make music just impresses their fans. However, I think this is such a new direction that most fans are not used to.

Anyhow, I'm hoping the rest of the album is better. I did like the end of Violet Hill though, the piano and also Jonny's guitar solo was awesome. Maybe it will grow on me, though I've heard it probably 12+ times already. Alternately, I loved Speed of Sound the minute I heard it and for me personally, X & Y is my favorite album of all time, from any band.

Ah grab a tater and smile..:)

yea uhhh i think we've been over this. theres a seperate thread for negative violet hill comments. no need to make your own thread.

Indeed, and further..i can not understand why ppl would feel the need to complain about a record that has been released....

A band becomes very one-dimensional when you expect every one of their songs to be uplifting. There are other things to express in the world.

I actually didn't find it quite depresssing. Yes, it is darker & more intense, but as I was discussing with my sister, I found the X part of the last album more depressing.

X & Y was definately not one of my favorite albums and I really liked the Y part of it much more. Hey the X songs were great in concert, but on a whole musically I am also used to their more traditional songs. I did like Speed of Sound right away as well and it is one of my favorites from that album. But, Fix You...that just feels more depressing, musically speaking. Hey, it works if you are in one of those moods...but sometimes it can be a bit much.

As I listen to Violet Hill more and more I am digging the rough electric guitar more and more. We'll see how the rest of the album is when time tells.

The fact is, that everybody expects coldplay to make a great record, when sometimes it's not as simple as many think it is.

They wanted to make a shift in their musical style and VH is a good example of it.

I'm not saying that VLVODAAHF could be their worst album, but..

just see the example of R.E.M. an awesome band with incredible songs, no one can say that it was one of the ebst bands of the 90's..but what about them NOW? their last albums have not been so good. why?

wanted to change their style.

But i'm aware that some change for better, i hope coldplay is one of them.

I love the song and especially the end, but I can see how fans of the piano ballads and acoustic songs might not like it as much. I love their quiet music, but I also listen to bands like System Of A Down, so loud=good too, imo.

ANd yes. There are already too many VH threads...although I think most have been merged already. Can we try and post in pre-existing threads instead of making new ones.;):)

Yeah, Violet Hill is boring.

The main problem I have with it is JB's guitar parts. The distorted guitar riff at the start of the song that drives the beat is shit, sounds very much cut and dropped there, it doesn't sound a part of the song. Also, JB's guitar solo is also shit. It sounds like something the Kaiser Chiefs would come up with. Very boring and repetitive.

Violet Hill will be the song I skip on VLVODAAHF.

Trouble with the solo is that although it's cool in its simplicity, it doesn't go anywhere. If he'd played it like that for the first 8 bars and then gone somewhere else with it (maybe moved up the neck) for the second 8, it would have been cool. I'd have suggested it move around more, had I been working on the album.

I also listen hard rock, metal, and a lot more of heavy genres, but the "heavy" part of VH, exactly at 2:20 is just not good i prefer them a bit softier

Well, I'm sure there will be some softer songs on the album for people who don't like VH. It's going to be very diverse, so hopefully there will be something for everyone on it!:D

im surprised they didnt have the solo go anywhere either. i really enjoy the song but when it gets to that part i always imagine it breaking into something more intense -- it's a great long break so they could have put so many good things in it --- like some great big string melodies underneath, would have made the repetitive solo make sense. it would have been nice to see jonny pull out a really crazy ass solo right there. even though he's one of my favorite guitarists due to the fact he never lets his guitar "overbear" the song, it would be nice for once to see him pull a hendrix or something.

I'd love to see him try.:) THat would be cool.

If it had to be repetitious, maybe they could have offset it with a counter-melody. I love doing that sort of thing.

I made an 'if you were eno' thread for ideas like this...I'd love to hear from other know-it-alls like me,lol.

You know in the last chorus of Square One, where chris arpeggiates his voice with jonny's looping 4 note riff, but in the opposite direction (he sings the 4 notes the other way around, if that makes any sense)? I think it added an interesting effect to that guitar line and made it more interesting to listen to. If they had used a similar technique in the VH with chris' voice complimenting the riff (to turn it into a 2-note chord), I think it would sound quite alot more interesting. I find it hard to use the proper terminology, so I hope people understand what I mean. Its hard to explain

That was one of the coolest moments on the album, imo. I thought it was a brilliant little bit of arranging.

i like the song actually but not 100%.

at the last verse "I took my love down to violet hill, there we sat in snow all the time she was silent still"

It sounds like something err... missing. But it's still good.

And i prefer if the the verse "If you love me, won't you let me know?" is repeated twice. :nice:

Is it my imagination or does the beginning of VIOLET HILL sound a bit like the theme tune to THE OC tv programme:o

agree:P i tought about it at once. and i love the oc song, so i love voilet hill to:) its great:P its so good sound:o

Try listening to Violet Hil with a broken heart. It's quite a sad song..

I'm surprised it sounded so like X&Y. Thought this would be something really out there.

I like it. I think it will be like Speed Of Sound - a steady and safe single but with the best yet to come on the album.

I hope it's not.

Speed of Sound got overplayed and I got sick of hearing it ALL the time. :(

Yeah its okay..but not as good as speed of sound....

As soon as I heard the opening notes of Speed Of Sound I was in love. It took longer with VH. I still love it, but it didn't hit me right away like SOS did. I fell in love with VH at the end of the song, not the beginning.
