A Spell a Rebel Yell is better than Violet Hill...

Featured Replies

I really like that 30-second-preview of that song.

It's different, but you can still feel that coldplay-touch...

Well, I just wanted to say that, I had never posted in here before... Good Morning everyone... Enjoy Coldplay ! God Bless !

hey!:)

...well I really like spell of a rebel yell and can't wait to hear the full version!...but maybe violet hill is a better first single for it's energic and different sound..don't know why but spell of a rebell yell reminds me a little of coldplay's firsts songs with those great athmosphere...:) beautiful...

Unless that was the best 30 seconds and the rest is as crap as Violet Hill ;)

Dunno about it really... I prefer Violet Hill because it's so fast and energetic... A Spell A Rebel Yell is kinda too slow for my taste...

I mean, Coldplay did have great slow songs in the past, but listening to this 30 second clip it sounded more like boring slow...

ASARY sounds like just my kind of Coldplay. I love the synthy stuff, that's why I'll always have a soft spot for X&Y.

violet hill is a way superior. well im not a kid i dont want to listen the same music all the day. violet hill is make me forget the old coldplay, seriously. i wanna hera the new album!!.

you can't judge based on 30 seconds thats rediculous

I'm holding out on a verdict as from the 30 seconds we've heard I'm not that impressed but there's no context, it could be better, it could be worse. If it's better, I'll be thrilled, because I love VH and two free grade A songs speak volumes about the album content :)

I agree with Justin, you can't completely judge both songs unless you hear all of ASARY.

I agree with you even if we have heard something different in ASARY, nearly the opposite of VH.. I think we have only to wait for hearing the whole song to compare it to VH

Yeah, you can't really judge a song based on a 30-second clip.

It's such a stupid tease, they shouldn't have done that. Just give the whole song or nothing.

i think...

i agree with ya.

violet hill is totally different. i'm hoping the rest of songs in the album are still coldplay-ish. i hope the old coldplay isn't totally fades.

The 2 are so different that I can't really compare. Esp. from a short clip. But I think I'm going to love ASARY because it blends electronic and organic sounds, and it has ENO written all over it. It already reminds me of Peter Gabriel and a little U2...and it's still ALL coldplay, from what I can tell. What's not to love? Better? I don't know. A great song in its own right? Absolutely. (Unless they played the only good 30 seconds in the whole song as a preview, lol.)

Welcome to the forum, by the way! Glad the new music's bringing us so many new members.:)

Welcome to the forum!

And kudos on voicing your opinion right away!:smug:

Well, it's definitely hard to judge a whole song on the basis of only 30 seconds of it, but from what we've got right now I personally like "Violet Hill" better. I didn't react very well when I first heard the clip of "ASARY" but it's definitely starting to grow on me now. I've been listening to it on repeat for about 10 minutes while I was joining up to become a member of the forum just now and creating my own icon/avatar.

I am still barely able to contain my enthusiasm for the upcoming album, though. It shoul d be fantabulous! :D

Of course you can judge a 30 second clip. Just like I can judge a movie trailer, and decide whether or not I want to see the movie.

Now, that doesn't mean I'm going to always make the right judgment. But, you at least get an idea.

Judging a book with having read only one single chapter, pretty interesting concept... though they were only doing it on french telly

Of course, only an ignorant person wouldn't think so. If I have 5 books and can only afford 1. How do you pick? You take a look and read a little of each, and buy the 1 that interests you the most. That doesn't mean you'll always be right with your judgment, but theres still nothing wrong with it.

Why do you think every other online music store in the known universe has 30 second samples? I've discovered many amazing bands and CD from browsing said samples and so have many other people. And what was I doing? Judging from 30 second samples. Of course, I've had it go the other way too.

I can't even tell anything about the song except that it sounds weird in that clip. I would have to hear the full song to form an opinion about it.

Hey, I wrote this long thing for a board on facebook, and because I'm that cheap I thought I'd put here too so I don't find myself saying the same things in other posts. Hope you don't mind.

Now that "violet hill", the first substancial piece of music to relieve our speculations of the past couple years is out, coldplay fan boards have gone abuzz with innumerous theories, opinions and questions.

Violet Hill is a solid song, not my fave, nor is it a complete let down. While having it's criticisms it does have many innovative changes that are new to coldplay repertoire and increse one's hope for the upcoming album.

My picture of the growing album is a constant rollercoaster. First I'm thrilled by the website and CD artwork scheme, and a moment later am incredulous at the announed album title. While the first single is good, I feel it reflects a more chaotic, perhaps louder side of the album that I doubt is exemplary of the album as a whole.

What I do find more encouraging than violet hill is the 30 seconds of violet hills b-side "a spell a rebel yell" made a available by nme in past weeks. I was ecstatic when I heard it because not only did it sound way better than violet hill, but the feel of it's synthy, spacey backdrop and vocals reminded me immediately of nothing other than the sound unique to u2's "The Joshua Tree". This is no doubt a brian eno influence. I don't lie when I say that months ago I was listening through "the joshua tree" and hoping that somehow LP4 would be a coldplay version of this album. And lo' and behold the sound is unmistakeable. for me, coldplay's next album is potentially a dream come true.

rolling stone's song by song account describes violet hill as probably the heaviest song on the album, and even it has it's sweet eno and coldplay-esque subtleties. Based on what I've heard so far, I expect Viva la vida will be more of a joshua tree than a kid A. While violet hill doesn't reflect that so well, it is an earthier, and more serious and powerful than much of what coldplay's done before and I feel that there will be two or three songs that hit the mark dead on and blow us away thanks to coldplay's new found musical bravery.

On Jo Whiley, Chris said that one of the driving factors for this new album is to make it okay to be that sixteen year old who says they like coldplay and not get teased about it. Basically to make it okay to like coldplay. While that's funny it's also encouraging that this may be a "cooler" album than X&Y and ensures that we won't see another "fix you".

You have DISCOVERED bands with 30 second samples... Fair enough, but you HAVE NOT SAID this song is better than this one, based on a 30 second sample..That would be as stupid as saying : This movie trailer is much more better than a whole other movie..

That's what this topic is about... And surely not : I only got money for one book but I'm tempted by 5 of them .. If a train leaves city A at 8.00 am traveling at the speed of 130 miles per hour etc...
