Compilation for a Friend

Featured Replies

My friend asked me to make a Coldplay compilation for him. (He asked me in particular because he said he didn't know anybody else who was into Coldplay) I wanted to see what you guys thought of my choices and sequencing; I spent much more time on the second than on the first.

1. Politik

2. Yellow

3. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face

4. Shiver

5. Clocks

6. Violet Hill

7. What If

8. Green Eyes

9. Speed Of Sound

10. The Scientist

11. Viva La Vida*

12. Fix You

13. Gold In Them Hills (Ron Sexsmith feat. Chris Martin)

14. Trouble

15. A Rush Of Blood To The Head

16. Easy To Please

17. Your Love Means Everything (Pt. 2) (Faultline feat. Chris Martin)

18. Life Is For Living

* I haven't actually listened to "Viva La Vida" (philosophical reasons), but I felt like I'd be cheating my friend by excluding it from the CD based on how much everybody here seems to like it.

And yes, "Don't Panic" is not here. I tried to include it because I know it's a "Coldplay classic", but in the end I just didn't like it enough to do so.

nonono

take off:

what if

speed of sound

gold in them hills

easy to please

your love means everything

add:

spies (underrated song)

amsterdam (thats just my favorite)

see you soon (best non album track by far)

talk (you must, its the song of the album0

in my place (you must have forgot it because by any measure it belongs on there)

Philosophical reasons?!

I'm not sure I understand you.

Is that some sort of silly way of saying you don't want to listen to it until the album comes out? Or something about the religious references because you're Mormon or something silly? :P

I don't think The Scientist after Speed of Sound works and I wouldn't end with Life is for Living, but the rest is a fairly decent structuring and selection.

P.S. if you're actually Mormon then I apologise but Joseph Smith was a bit daft so you had it coming.

ahh YOUR LOVE MEANS EVERYTHING :D :D

i'd say take off what if and easy to please

put either gravity or proof..or both.

oh put see you soon :D

Ain't Mormon, but thanks for being considerate in your second post. Your first guess was right: I was trying to save it for a better "album experience" when Viva La Vida comes out, but I already broke down. I put on the album and didn't bother to skip the track when it came on.

Yeah, the flow gets kinda iffy around there. Particularly "Viva La Vida" into "Fix You". Otherwise, I'm very pleased with it.

I decided to end the album the same way the band did on Parachutes. I liked the idea of the light-hearted ending.

add:

spies (underrated song)

amsterdam (thats just my favorite)

Spies - I love Spies; it was my favorite song from Parachutes for a while. I don't consider it a "hit", though.

Amsterdam - I already had six songs from ARoBttH. Seven would have been pushing it, I think.

See You Soon - Never heard it.

Talk - This song just isn't very special to me. To me, the big songs of X&Y are the three I included.

In My Place - I have never understood why everybody loves the crap out of this song. I was happy not to include it. No offense or anything.

put either gravity or proof..or both.

oh put see you soon :D

The rate-limiting factor here is the fact that I haven't heard any of these songs. I'm sure they're dandy, though.

And I will defend "Easy To Please" to the death. It's one of my favorite Coldplay songs by a mile.

Firstly, I can never understand people who say they are "into Coldplay" but still haven't heard loads of their songs...they're really not difficult to find.

Secondly, what are 'Gold In Them Hills' and Faultline doing on this CD? They're not even Coldplay songs! Waste of space.

Other songs that need leaving off:

Green Eyes (one of the worst on AROBTTH, in my opinion)

What If (Coldplay at their worst and most formulaic)

I agree with you about 'In My Place', I like it, but it is not a "classic"...but if you're leaving off 'Spies' because it wasn't a "hit", why are you leaving off this? And why are you including other songs that weren't hits (e.g. Green Eyes etc)?

You need to add (or at least listen to);

See You Soon (I second the poster above, it is one of their best songs)

Don't Panic (probably my favourite on Parachutes)

Things I Don't Understand (probably a better song than 90% of the songs on X&Y)

Talk (this and 'Fix You' are BY FAR the best tracks on that album...the demo is even better)

Aside from that, it's fine.

That MUST change, my friend. Pronto.

Listen to it, decide if you like it, then put it on the playlist/compilation. This is one of their best, most understated pre-parachutes songs they have produced in my opinion.

I do like most of your list though, even though there are quite a few things i would personally change ('Gold...' would have to go for me, and be replaced by something like 'Swallowed in the Sea').

I figured my friend might end up buying a Coldplay album or two later on, so that minimizes the overlap. It also added variety.

I know it's very shaky logic. I left off "Spies" because I knew few people would harass me (in person :dozey:) for leaving it off. I left off "In My Place" because I just don't care for it enough. I included "Green Eyes" because it represents a side of Coldplay most of their songs don't show - most songs are long, loud, and anthem-esque, while "Green Eyes" is a pleasant, tightly written number.

And thank you for your recommendations.

Early? Underrated?

I like those qualifications. That's half of the reason I included "Easy To Please".

P.S. if you're actually Mormon then I apologise but Joseph Smith was a bit daft so you had it coming.

Im Mormon! and that hurt, jerk.

YOUVE NEVER HEARD SEE YOU SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

see you soon was like the second b side i ever heard and that was because of live 2003 how can you never have hEARD OF SEE YOU SOON

!

You should also add Moses, one of the best live performances during their AROBTTH tour(Watch the Live 2003 dvd and you know what I mean:P)

btw One I love is also superb:D

My advice:

*Leave off the non-Coldplay songs. Especially Gold in Them Hills, that song sucks.

*You really should add Don't Panic.

*Leave off Fix You and/or Speed of Sound. There should be a X&Y song on it though. I recommend White Shadows, Low or A Message.

*Good to see an old song like Easy to Please on it. There really should be old Coldplay songs on a compilation like this. You could add one more, like Bigger Stronger, See You Soon or even Ode to Deodorant.

*Maybe another b-side? Animals, I Ran Away, 1.36 are my favs.

nonono!

keep on:

What if

Speed of Sound (even though it's kind of ehhh....)

Easy to Please

Your love means Everything (Because it's actually good)

KEEP OFF:

GOLD IN THEM HILLS (bleh)

Oh you should add:

How you See the World (It's really kind of good)

Low (Most definitely, it's one of my favorites)

High Speed

Why leave Fix You off? It's one of the best coldplay-songs:cool:

You can keep Fix You if you want, it is one of their most popular songs, I just don't like it.

No Amsterdam? Fail.

It's just that, if I had to make a list consisting of one Coldplay song it would be that one.

But yeah, just let him listen to A Rush Of Blood? Most people think it's their best. For good reason; he'll be blown away right from the start (gotto love Politik).

EDIT: What's up with Talk being all overrated? Worst song on X&Y :P (along with The Hardest Part)

Ik heb nog nooit een top 10 Coldplay lijst gemaakt :(

Anyway, why not just let him listen to an entire album?

TAKE OFF Gold in them hills?!

No no no SIR, keep that on!

You can take of Speed of Sound though, because that was majorly overplayed.

Add:

Things I Don't Understand

Animals

Violet Hill

The FIRST version of Talk

White Shadows

A Message

The Scientist

Brothers and Sisters

*EDIT* There is no love for Gold in them Hills on this thread. :P It's good considering the other guy sounds like kermit the frog.

Looks like endless discussion :P

Coldplay should definitely release Greatest Hits (CD+DVD maybe?)
