DrHW
The four songs we have heard indicate what I posted earlier. "Not Everyone is Going to Like This...." Chris is honest and straightfoward. This sounds like "B" sides that were unpublished. Is there potential for more that has not been heard? Yes. With his personal life it would been hard to imagine that the, "greatest of all time" masterpiece was being recorded. This is one, if not the favorite group that I have. I have seen them four times and would not hesitate to go again. I think that they "could" be the Band that can knock U2 off of the Perch at the Top. If they had to go here before going there, then I am all for it. This is not the direction that will take them there. Do what you do best. Add some more true, hard rock, passion and circle the wagons as I know you have it in you. I know the Masterpiece is on it's way. :)

TraceOddity
I like what I've heard so far, and the 'A-sides' are of higher quality than the B-sides, but it remains to be seen whether this will be the album. It could be, but let's hope they keep evolving and that there are even more 'new directions' on albums to come!:D
Mimixxx
With his personal life it would been hard to imagine that the, "greatest of all time" masterpiece was being recorded. What do you mean by this? You mean cos he's happy and not in turmoil he can't write a good album?

This was a disappointing step IMO. We'll see what happens.
lostsides
Well said. They need to go back in the rock direction. This was a disappointing step IMO. We'll see what happens. Coldplay were never 'rock'. They might've written a few more guitar-driven tracks but I wouldn't call them a rock band. I really like the direction they're going. It's new and that's all I wanted from LP4. footyfan10
yeah i cant say i agree that this album is the wrong direction, if anything its the direction X & Y was not. every band needs an album where they throw most of their old stuff out of the window so they can see what its like to different stuff, and luckily IMO, this album did that without sacrificing quality, in many ways i think it increased their quality. think about the bands that last a long time, along the lines of a U2 or Oasis or The Rolling Stones (a really really long time), they all evolved. coldplay's evolution has been paced like U2's, who took a good five albums before they really hit one out of the park with The Joshua Tree. the fans obviously like the stuff before it (I love U2's early albums, and I obviously love Coldplays) but it wasn't until they had time to get big (in coldplays case going into X & Y) and then realize being big wasn't so great if it was just big and not better. which is exactly what Chris Martin said. I think Viva la Vida might be Coldplay's Joshua Tree, in that it has A LOT of top quality songs. I mean, right now there isn't a song i dislike, and ive listened to them long enough to start to be iffy on them. i mean, all songs sound good or bad right away, but once you get past that and you find you like them, you know you've got a grade A album. A Rush of Blood to the Head was a Grade A album, parachutes was an A- for me, but X & Y was just a B, because i look at a lot of the songs as ones that i wont be listenting to hardly at all after the album after viva la vida comes out. there not bad songs, but they aren't good either (what if, white shadows, a message, low to name a few). right now i like every new song because they all offer something unique. It's probably apparent I'm a big U2 fan, but I will say that in terms of breadth of top quality songs per album, they tend to do less than well. they usually have a few standouts, but because they've been a band for a long time it seems like they've made a lot of great albums. Coldplay was most like U2 with X & Y because it only had a few offerings I think we'll be hearing ten years from now (fingers crossed theyre still together!). Songs like Fix You, Speed of Sound, Talk, Swallowed in the Sea. But Viva la Vida looks like it could be the perfect record. So yeah, long story really long, i think this album rocks right now, and i can only hope that stays true when we've got the whole thing.
EnglishSilk
I will only repeat what I posted in another thread, because I just love Chris`s voice above all else "I don`t care if all the new album is nothing but bathroom noises of Chris`s gargle, spit and rinse" , I`m gonna love it!:D
Pseudonym
I just hope Coldplay someday reaches the worldwide success levels of U2. It seems like everyone in the world loves U2 and has been around during all their evolution and stardom. I kind of like their music, I just never really got into it. Id really like to see my favorite band, Coldplay, reach those success levels cuz I ddint get to live thru the "U2 era". So I want to see what it's like to be a fan of a band that everyone loves and is famous around the world. To get back on topic, I think even if this album isnt Coldplay's strongest or best style, it's good for them to get all this experimentation out of their systems until they truly hit their stride, which I believe will happen with LP5.:D
Famous Old Painter
Well said. They need to go back in the rock direction. This was a disappointing step IMO. We'll see what happens. What? What I've heard of VLV is the closest to "rock" they've ever done! Violet Hill is thier heaviest song yet! Or do you want them to go back to such brutal headbangers as Sparks or We Never Change? Bobby Dylan
Haha, I'm guessing he meant like really early stuff, like the first three EP's have some more straightforward rock type songs. Just off the top of my head Brothers and Sisters, It's Only Superstition, Bigger Stronger. Those types of songs. They always had softer ballad type songs though, never were just a straight up rock band
JPB
I'm not crazy bout having to use U2 analogies but I believe VLVODAAHF will be their The Unforgettable Fire, which I think is Chris' favourite U2 album - A Sort of Homecoming is definitely one of his favourite songs. Both albums are the fourth in their respective careers and both albums contain exactly ten tracks (hidden ones we ain't countin). LP4 will turn heads. "Oh wow, is that Coldplay? Y'know I hadn't really liked em before but this is really good!" It will convert many! Violet Hill and Viva La Vida are already doing that. LP5 will be the one to put Coldplay on top. Then LP6 will suck. Joking!:P

I can't see myself listening to many, if any, songs from X&Y after Viva la Vida comes out. The only songs from that album I can listen to now are Fix You, A Message, Swallowed in the Sea, and 'Til Kingdom Come.
