June 7, 200818 yr Ok Professor :dunce: Obviously you are a master at the bass and no every fine point of the awesome bass player, please explain how (WITH A GOOD REASONG) he is not a good bass player Well, I DO believe he is a "good" bass player, but the basslines he writes and plays with Coldplay's songs aren't any more special than the "basslines" put into most of today's mainstream music. I'm not trying to really diss him or anything, in fact he's the bassist who inspired me to become one. But I DON'T think he is anything "amazing" as mentioned above. Most of his basslines consist of him striking the root note of the current chord...over....and then again...and then again (there are exceptions of course). I just wish he'd get a little more creative. I do realize though that most people out their listening to music don't even pay attention to basslines when listening to music. Most of them just enjoy hearing the root note repetitively, and would probably prefer it that way.........which is sad....*sigh*......
June 7, 200818 yr what i dont understand is why in interviews we no longer see the 4 of them together, they are split in 2's forever now? or something.. its like jonny and chris, and guy with will.. weird I assume its because it is easier for each band member to have a chance to speak as opposed to all of them sitting together and Chris answering the majority of the questions, which is what we are so used to seeing

I have noticed that there are some songs with the repetitive root note, but so many of his bass lines are so much more than that (amsterdam, X&Y, Life In Technicolor, Speed Of Sound) many more i could a lot more if i wanted to waist my time

Don't get me wrong, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE COLDPLAY! But I'm mostly a fan because of their songwriting abilities, not their musicianship. And as for the "bassline" in Strawberry Swing, it's a perfect example of what I was talking about above. It's hardly even audible. You could just use a keyboard/workstation and get the same sound for that song.
June 7, 200818 yr look at the following baselines: violet hill enl white shadows Violet Hill: Playing the root note with the beat of the dream over and over (with a few small fillers every now and then). enl: absolutely guy's BEST bassline in my opinion, it's simple, but it's catchy. Fun to just sit back, relax, and play. White Shadows: Playing the same two notes over and over..ugh

Guy is an incredible bass player, not just because of what complicated things he can do, but also how he can keep reserved and not go over the top. Coldplay's music would sound too overcrowded with over-complicated basslines. Guy also does excellent jobs electronically with synths and the like. I wouldn't say he is a shit bassplayer, on the contrary one of the best Rock music has ever seen(heard). Apart from all this, I picked Jonny. He comes home bells ringing in this album. Every song has facinating and brilliant riffs and solos. Will's beats are also wack! I love how he's done what he's done! I agree with Chris when he said that in this album he sees the other guys taking the glory back. It's true.

A perfect example of this is the fact that Guy could never pull off some of the baselines that Chili Pepper's Michael Balzary, Will could never keep up with some of drumming of Niel Peart, and Johnny could never in a million years play most of the music from Joe Satriani. On the flip side, all of these great musicians could never write the quality tracks that Coldplay can. While I love Rush, Led Zeppelin, and the Chili Peppers, among others, I love coldplay even more because their talent is in their brilliant songwriting. Despite the fact that they don't have the musical talent of other successful bands.

Of course neither Chris, Jonny, Will or Guy are the most talented persons of the world with their instruments, but their true talent is the beautiful melodies they create and that’s what makes them be my favorite band in the world.
June 7, 200818 yr i personally agree with Kaos none of them possess any freakish talent but just because will is no john bonham, or jonny is no slash and guy is no flea and even chris isnt exactly freddie mercury on stage doesnt meen that their music isnt high quality and somewhat complex. its what a band creates as a group that matters. best example...U2 you would struggle find any of them in the top 100 for their respective instruments (maybe edge might creep in) but nonetheless they are one of the most respected successful bands in history. and i also agree that it is their (chris's) songwriting that attracts me to coldplay.

Perfect examples of complicated bass lines that don't overcrowd the song.
