the only thing that bugs me about this song is at 2:18 when they abruptly get into the "Death and all of his friends" bit of the ending. It seems to come out of nowhere. haha.

Well, the part at 2:18 was actually well played, the band started on a scale from a soft piano intro with vocals, then going with some guitar notes, to some 3-4 secs of rock with the drums, after that, Jonny takes the show with his guitar and the band sings

it's that 2:18 introduced a whole new part of the song in a kind of abrupt way

unlike 1:48 to 1:52, which acts as a perfect bridge to the "Status Quo" bit AgeSix is talking about.

 

i don't hate it, it just sounds a bit weird. i guess it's because the 2:18 bit starts on the fourth beat of the measure, instead of the first.

 

still, it's a very very beautiful song.

Yeah, the time signature changes. The "status quo" bit is 4/4 apart from the last bar, which is 3/4 and then the last section is 7/4 (can be counted as 3+4).

 

I'm really pleased to hear some time signatures other than 4/4. The majority of Coldplay's work has been 4/4 so far so the use of alternative time signatures is one of the highlights (one of many) of Viva La Vida for me. Cemeteries of London is in 6/8, Yes has passages of 2/4 which give it a real nice skip, Violet Hill has a bar of 2/4 here and there too and, of course, the aforementioned Death and All His Friends ending in 7/4. Lots of triplet feel too. Very pleasing :)
