I was totally on Federer's side at the beginning of the match but was chuffed for Nadal at the end - you could see it meant so much to him.

 

As for the underwear and ball-bouncing (and by the way how often does he rub himself down with a towel!) I think he has a bit of OCD. But I reckon a lot of top sports people do - it's that attention to detail that makes them a champion

^ I agree. About that OCD thing. He's got this special way of putting his bottles of water on the ground too.. he's full of ticks this guy! hehe

I actually didn't see much of the match - I had to listen to it on the radio as I was on a long car journey. Didn't get home 'til halfway through the last set.

 

Will watch a repeat though and look out for that bottle thing - what exactly is it that he does?

I didn't catch it much this match, but I've seen it in Roland Garros and the commentator mentioned it too. It's how the bottles should be put the same exact place that it was before and heading the same way.

Definitely. I watched it through all the delays and was determined not to sleep until it was done. They were both great, but Nadal just had great persistence and determination, moreso that I could've seen coming from Fed, which in truth actually started coming out after the first rain delay. Had they continued playing then, it really could've ended there.

 

Either way, great tennis :D (And Fed was also touching his butt too guys lol, it's only that Nadal is more, well, bootylicious that it becomes more obvious and happens so oftne :laugh3: - still doesn't take away from the fact he is a terrific tennis player and now, winner!)

It was a damn good match, I only caught the last hour of it though.

It will go down as the greatest Wimbledon match of all time - one of the days when the nation stood still to watch a titanic sporting encounter.

Millions of TV viewers and a packed Centre Court were transfixed by the gladiatorial battle between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal which finished with darkness descending at 9.15pm.

The Spaniard finally triumphed 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7 in what was also the longest men's final ever played, at four hours 48 minutes.

 

Roar of approval: A winning point for Nadal

 

The exultant 22-year-old then clambered up to embrace his family and then, in a first, strolled along to the Royal Box to shake hands with King Juan Carlos and pick up a Spanish flag.

 

Afterwards he said: 'I'm very happy to win this. It's like a dream, it's my favourite tournament.'

As the tension built during the match, the Centre Court audience even ended up sounding like a football crowd, chanting for their favourite player.

Nadal is the the first man since Bjorn Borg in 1980 to win the French Open and Wimbledon back to back.

His epic victory last night denied Federer what would have been his sixth consecutive Wimbledon title and both players were tearful as they embraced each other at the net.

 

The seemingly never-ending battle is likely to eclipse even the classic final between John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg in 1980, widely regarded until yesterday as the best match seen at Wimbledon.

First set: Nadal shows his power

 

The American won that in five sets, 8-6 in the final set. That match is probably best known for an amazing tie-break in the fourth set which McEnroe won 18-16.

Borg was there yesterday to see the Spaniard rush to a two-set lead and seemingly on his way to victory without too much drama. Then Federer hit back. To add to the suspense, there was a succession of rain breaks.

The match, scheduled to start to at 2pm, was initially delayed by more than half an hour by rain.

 

There were two further rain breaks and there were fears that the game might not be completed because of bad light and to add to the mix Nadal slipped awkwardly and hurt his right knee at one point.

 

 

 

But Federer is far from finished

Federer, gracious in defeat, said: 'I tried everything, got a little back, but Rafa's a deserved champion as he played fantastic. I'll be back next year.'

 

Nadal said: 'He is still number one - the best.'

I missed the first two sets but caught the last 3. What a game!!Absolutely amazing! I was rooting Nadal aswell. He so deserved this!!!!

I watched the first two sets and the final set. It was a perfect match!
