Coldplay crash the crowd at Madison Square Garden

Band get up close with audience in New York

Jun 25, 2008

Coldplay performed the last of their three free shows at Madison Square Garden in New York City last night (June 24), after two similar events in London and Barcelona recently.

Opening with 'Life In Technicolor', the band made their way through a 16-song set in front of the capacity crowd who scored free tickets, battling several technical difficulties along the way.

Fresh from the news that they have scored both the Number One album and single spot on the Billboard charts, singer Chris Martin modestly commented that the almost-title track from new album 'Viva La Vida Or Death And All ' "somehow made it to Number One in your country".

Martin several times made jokes about the free show, telling the crowd "There are no refunds."

In front of crowd dotted with many familiar faces including Kirsten Dunst, Albert Hammond, Jr., Helena Christensen and Charlize Theron, the band performed a number of songs from 'Viva La Vida..', as well as older favourites including 'In My Place', 'Clocks' and 'Trouble'.

From messed-up lyrics to problematic equipment, the band’s difficulties added to the stripped-down feeling of raw authenticity that saw them perform on catwalks extending both sides of the enormous stage.

Attempting to perform new track 'Chinese Sleep Chant', an issue with Jonny Buckland's guitar promoted a frustrated Martin to say: "Fuck it, let's cancel the gig. This is embarrassing. Let's go home. We come over here, we steal your women and we can't even play one song."

Later, accompanied by several security personnel, the band literally walked off stage into the 10,000 strong crowd to the back of the arena, where they performed two acoustic songs - 'Yellow' and

'Death Will Never Conquer', on which drummer Will Champion took on vocal duties.

Returning to the stage for 'Fix You' and final track 'Lovers In Japan', the band opted out of an encore, with the show clocking in at just 70 minutes.

Coldplay played:

'Life in Technicolor'

'Violet Hill'

'Clocks'

'In My Place'

'Viva La Vida'

'Chinese Sleep Chant'

'God Put A Smile Upon Your Face'

'42'

'Square One'

'Trouble'

'Lost!'

'Strawberry Swing'

'Yellow'

'Death Will Never Conquer'

'Fix You'

'Lovers in Japan'

Death Will Never Conquer??

^ Uh, yeah, is that a cover or an all new song? Must. Know!

The same set as Brixton I think :)

Politik still conspicuous by its absence...

Yeah, I wonder if that is their set list for the tour?

The tour will be longer by four or five songs, one of them acoustic I think.

Yeah, these are just buzz gigs... warm up shows. The tour shows will be longer and of course have encores.

I hope DAAHF is only missing from these setlists because they are saving it for the proper tour...

Me too, really hope they play DaAHF live. Perhaps a final encore of that, then Fix You and Lovers in Japan is on the cards??

yup.. encore for sure. also cemetaries of london better be on the sydney setlist!

It would be a crime not to play DAAHF live.

That song seems to be virtually created to end a concert. I love it so much.

Oh, and I think they should really give Fix You a rest for a while, but I know that's not going to happen.

I agree, Semy.

Especially with the entire band singing the chorus.

:wreck:

It's giving me chills just thinking about it live.

I know, at least play it a couple of times on tour, so we can hear what it's like. But its absence is definitely worrying me. It's so epic!

And they must play A Rush of Blood to the Head.

And of course DAAHF...

There is at least 30 songs that would disappoint me if they didn't play them.

I heard its an old Irish pub song....... ??? I can't be certain.. I'm not Irish, nor have I been to any authentic irish pubs.. :embarassed:

Agreeeeeeeed! This is what I was hoping to hear come out of the Brixton show and it seems it still hasn't happened. They could play that final chorus "... I don't wanna follow DAAHF..." over and over. I garuntee that would be come an instant classic finisher just like Amsterdam and even Fix You, Lovers In Japan just seems out of place at the end... Its a great song but it doesn't belong there. Oh well, I think DAAHF just makes sense as the finale...

You know what else is cool? Fix You and DAAHF are in the same key. How cool would THAT transition be if they played them back to back as a finale?? :o;)

LOL

where do we go for pics of the concert??
