Kernan emphasizes the graphic and explicit nature of satire; he often refers to the obvious physical characteristics of satiric symbols, such as sickly or decaying flesh of figures meant to represent human vice, while Swift’s characters represent the same vices in a less explicit or obvious manner. While some aspects of satire as presented in Gulliver’s Travels are occasionally consistent with Kernan’s model, particularly in Part IV of the novel, his vision of satire for the most part does not correspond with Swift’s satiric style.
