Nobody has mentioned Velvet Underground & Nico

I've never listened to it, but I know it was very influentia

A famous remark, often attributed to British musician Brian Eno, is that while only a few thousand people bought the first Velvet Underground record upon its release, almost every single one of them was inspired to start a band.[2]l

The reason why no-one has mentioned Velvet Underground & Nico is because it's so god-damn over-rated.

Sgt. Pepper-The Beatles

Dark Side of the Moon-Pink Floyd

Kind of Blue-Miles Davis

OK Computer-Radiohead

Thriller-Michael Jackson

Revolver-The Beatles

Tommy-The Who

The Doors-The Doors

Nevermind-Nirvana

In Rainbows-Radiohead

Why do you consider In Rainbows worthy of being mentioned in the list?

It's rather an interesting choice, imo. Considering the rest of the albums you've put there.

i would also put In Rainbows there, but not because of the amzing music that album boasted but the impact it had on the music industry. the whole pay-what-you-want "stunt" and the webcasts and all that other stuff completely turned the music world on its head and now every band is obliged to release its music in creative ways. if i would to describe the full impact of the album i would be here for days but we havent seen the "world of music" shift like this since nirvana's Nevermind. mind you i am not claiming that radiohead has saved the record label industry (if anything they left it in a worse state) but they have changed the way big bands behave.

another album to throw into the mix

Chemical Brothers- Surrender

what about some classics of new "genres" like: Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Genesis, Mike Oldfield, Kraftwerk, OMD... just to mention some ones...

ok i'll post a more clear list... but just choose 10 albums... it will be hard.

btw i agree with LZ & PF ones.

1.Michael Jackson - Thriller

2.Michael Jackson - Dangerous

3.Michael Jackson - Off The Wall

4.Michael Jackson - HIStory

5.Michael Jackson - Bad

now non MJ albums...

6.Coldplay - Viva La Vida

7.Coldplay - A Rush Of Blood To The Head

8.Evanescence - The Open Door

9.The Corrs - Unplugged

10.Placebo - Placebo

yep that's for me lol

one that i cant decide on

Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

I think Coldplay has to be there, now were drowning in bands that sound like AROBTTH era coldplay.

The Beatles albums that should be there imo is Stg Pepper, its crazy experimentalism and the loose concept album were concepts invented then and there. And we still have bands trying to copy this albums formula. For inspiring though i think revolver should be there. Hell so should every Beatles album, no band did what they did.

Now for albums that lead to a huge ammount of people grabbing guitar and starting a band.

Well look at punk like The Clash's London Burning or the Sex Pistols (tho i hate them) Oasis / Nirvana helped raise guitar sales in the 90's and they both have their albums of critical praise.

Hmm what else.

1. Stg peppers lonely hearts club band

2. London's Calling

3. Morning Glory

4. Nevermind

5. A Rush of blood

6. The bends (inspired most of the stuff of that decade in britain)

7 - 10 more beatles...

(in no particular order)

-Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, Coldplay.

-X&Y, Coldplay.

-AROBTTH, Coldplay.

-Parachutes, Coldplay.

-Songs For You, Truths For Me, James Morrison.

-Drastic Fantastic, KT Tunstall.

-It Won't Be Soon Before Long, Maroon 5.

-Continuum, John Mayer.

-Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, The Beatles.

-Back To Black, Amy Winehouse.

Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon

Sex Pistols-Never Mind the Bollocks

Public Image Ltd-Metal Box

Kraftwerk-Trans Europe Express

Silver Apples-Silver Apples

U2-Joshua Tree

Radiohead-OK Computer

My Bloody Valentine-Loveless

Gary Numan-Replicas

The Cure-Faith

I do not think any of Coldplay's albums define music at the moment. Maybe at some point in the future. I think they are influenced by the defining albums but not yet legends.

^^

my favourite list of albums so far nice work chillinrevev. and i agree that they have been influenced by some of the records mentioned rather than be an influence for others acts at least not to the same extent as Oasis or radiohead. i guess only time will tell if coldplay have any impact at all. in my opinion the only act i can see having influence over bands that will unearth over the next decade are the White Stripes with their unique almost garage rock like minimalistic sounds and Jack Whites awe-inspiring vocals and guitar work

How can people honestly say Viva La Vida has defined music? its a good album yet, but I think you'll find its more copying ideas set by the Beatles (using foreign music ectra) to create an engaging pop record.

I don't think its going to be anywhere near as influencial as the likes of Parachutes. But |I know you can't judge this just yet, give it a year.

1. Revolver - The Beatles

2. Joshua Tree - U2

3. Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis

4. Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones

5. Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs - Derek & the Dominos

6. OK Computer - Radiohead

7. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd

8. Black Holes and Revelations - Muse

9. In Absentia - Porcupine Tree

10. Costello Music - The Fratellis

to be honest to compare fratellis albums i think the new one shits on costello music. but i know most people feel the other way.

i agree with you actually, and i was tossed between the two. but to be honest, costello music was so fresh when it came out so i had to put it on there

thats a very awesome list of albums you have there but the last three dont quite match the criteria most would attribute to an "influential and impacting" album. i honestly cant think of any bands which have been directly influenced by BHAR or the fratellis album. maybe in 10yrs time these albums might have an impact but they still fall under the category of being inspired by older records more than influencing future ones.

nonetheless a great list!!! thanks to everyone who has contributed.
