Violet Hill is being played far too early in the set!!

Second or third song, right?

It feels 'cold' to me when they play it so early. At least, it did when I saw the band twice in June, and I'd been hoping they'd fixed it by now. But I've (obviously!!) been reading the reviews of every gig, and just now had a PM from a friend here who saw them just a few nights ago and said the very same thing...

I really don't think this magnificent song should be one used to warm up the crowd. For a start, it doesn't do that at all. It seems just to keep them lukewarm (if that) after LiT - till the temperature rises later.

I think it's not one to get people going and set their hearts on fire so early on, but would be a great crowdpleaser later on when everyone's already riding that high. Not quite an arena singalong like VLV, but pretty close, in the right spot. Much love for this one is going untapped, and it pains me.

Thoughts?

I love it second! It's the song people know most (along with VLV) and it gets the crowd pumped up early. It just fits so well after LIT. I actually think it might have done alright being track 2 on the album, putting COL later. I think it's perfect live.

Interesting 2732, thanks for the input. You've seen them this tour I take it, and it well down very well with the crowd and really started the party mood? I'm so glad to hear that :)

I just worry because here in the UK it only got a few weeks airtime before Viva was released, and after that radio-wise it's been completely forgotten (such is the all-powerful Viva, lol) To my mind that's a great shame - it's a cracking song. Even at the June gigs it didn't get much of a reception, despite being the first and much-awaited return of the band, though it was of course a decent singalong at the start and end.

Anyway thanks again, you've given me hope it may yet rock the crowd in December :)

Anyone else?

Yep, the crowd certainly loved Violet Hill here. It was also nice to know what song was going to be played first (after LIT of course) and the whole crowd sang along the chorus part.

I think it doesn't matter what order they play songs in, if the crowd loves the band. they'll get pumped no matter what.

(And I saw them in Hartford, CT August 2nd):D

Brilliant!! :D

This is my worry. I saw them twice in London in June, and that was the feeling (as I described) this much-loved song gave me - too 'cool' and under-appreciated (even though those dates were at the height of its release, arguably).

Come December, that's a lot more time for the casual fans to forget the track even more. I should think that in the States you get a lot of people who really love the band at the gigs, whereas here they're a household name. Everybody wants to see them even though they know only 'Clocks' etc - just so that they can tell people they were at the gig.

This wonderful song's not on the radar for many such people, alas :(

Poll added (and the result so far with my one vote is clear hehe).

Please vote, also convince me more that I'm wrong!

I LOOOOOOOOVE VIOLET HILL...and i really think that it should be later in the set!...It seems like they really dont care too much for it! Cuase when they really care and like a song it seems like they put out it later on the set!..So by putting it for thr 2nd song it seems like whatever lets just get it over with!

I personally love that song!!!

i love every single coldplay song! (except "a whisper"....i dunno why :laugh3: )

..and im not bothered what order they are played in really...but i can see what u mean that it should be played later in the set :D

i think its good where it is. the first time i heard the song back in april i remember thinking that it would be a great song to open up a set. i understand why they open with LiT but i definately think violet hill is a great follow up. however nothing can beat the opening combo of square one and politik... NOTHING.

Saw them quite a few times now for this tour and I like VH being played right after LIT. It really fits ! Great song to start with and sing along to. During LIT, you only get to sing the oohoohooooh oohoohooooh oohooh, and so you're eager to sing more. VH does the job pretty well !

now if you ask me about Viva La vida, there I would tell you it doesnt fit (that's just me). I think the song might be better at the end after the acoustic set, before the last encore !

I think it fits perfectly after LiT as well! It just flows, you know, and Jonny guitar solo just makes the crowd go wild !

Itæs a great second song!

I actually don't like Square One that much as an intro song. I really preferred AROBTTH Tour opening with Politik and then moving on, usually to GPASUYF or something. I think the organ playing and then the sudden pounding is the most chilling and exciting way to open a gig.

too early, I insist that Square One should be right after LIT :(

Yeah, they both should go after LIT at least or just Square One

square one was made for X&Y and should die with it, fine if it shows up in the middle of the set on rare occasion, but this isn't twisted logic anymore.

exactly. they change the set lists with each new album.

I dont think that Violet Hill is played too early.I think it fits perfect where it is.Being that Chris said that Violet Hill was always a track that they wanted everyone to hear first. So i guess its no suprise thats its right after LIT.Althought i do think that a LIT,Sqaure One,Politik,Violet Hill combo to open the concert would be awesome!!

totally agree with you :)

not too sure about having Politik back as an opener ! but the reason you mentioned is why it's perfect for the first encore after the C-stage part ! The crowd relax during the C-stage and then get excited during the remix and when Coldplay come back on stage with Politik, it just blows everyone's mind :D

LIT -> Cemeteries, like on the album.

I'd love it if that happened.

Violet Hill should be later in the set IMO.

I would have loved if they played Square One before Violet Hill, but Violet Hill second was great too. It doesn't really matter much to me.

Thanks so much for the comments guys, it's given me a lot to think about...:)

I guess my problem is that VH's just such a 'cool' song. I think they either need some greater 'warmth' there to get the crowd jumping (Clocks? - not that I'm a big fan, but they'll always play it) , or something dramatic and deeply impressive (Square One or Politik fit the bill for me, but I'd love other suggestions).

i wasnt saying they should use it as an opener again... all i was saying is that out of all the opening combinations of the first 2 songs theyve used so far that was my favorite. it would be stupid if they opened with a song not on viva la vida because this is the viva la vida tour. but IMO there are really no other good songs to open a concert on viva la vida other than LiT and VH.

however i think politik is the best single opening song. put i prefer the COMBO of square one/politik over politik/gpasuyf. but really idk any song by any band that could open a concert than politik. just my opinion.

It's a really good opener. Gets the audience SOO amped. Just as long as they spread out their big singles, it's all good.
