Why?

Why not?

Public schools teach children government propaganda. They don't get a real education that helps them in life.

Private schools can spread propaganda very easily too.

I vote so I can actually bitch about the government. Still crooked as heck but which gov't isn't.

I agree that there are problems in the public education system, but I wouldn't call it propaganda. Right now, with No Child Left Behind, there is too much of an emphasis on testing and improving test scores and holding schools accountable for failing scores. Instead of giving students the opportunity to go to better schools (which is fine as a temporary solution), we need to focus more on improving these schools that are failing, which means more funds for them. Something isn't right in this country when people in New York City will pay millions to build new baseball stadiums while only a few blocks away, there are classes being held in stairwells and not enough textbooks for every student.

And to be honest, neither presidential candidate took a stance on education that I could agree with. :\

However, on other issues, I agreed with Obama the most, and hopefully these aspects of the educational system here will change over time.

Education is fucked up anyway, you learn things just to pass a test, not to gain skills in life.

I think people need to calm down, he's not jesus.

If people keep over hyping him he's going to be disappointing with what he actually does

I think what the majority of the excitement is about is the fact that he's our first black president, and that this an extremely surreal and historical moment in US History and for all American citizens.

Yeah-- test scores mean absolutely nothing as an indicator of how much one has actually learned.

The multitudes of stupid people I deal with in a daily basis is an example of how tests are not an indicator of knowledge. And I work in the legal industry.

This is terrifying. You should be ashamed.

I did vote today as soon as the polls opened! :D Go Team Obama!

It's not as bad as mine Saf

We don't have KINGS here in America. That's the whole reason we got away from the British monarchy. Thousands of Americans DIED so we would never have to worry about oppressive government again.

Yet people treat this politician like he's some sort of savior, the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's horrifying to watch unfold.

Honestly, it's just some lyrics matched to a certain meaning made to a sig, no need to get worked up about it and make a huge deal, I doubt Chels means what you imply she means.

This all sounds too much like one of these cases:

Hey, I love that one. :cheesy:

Come on, it's just a metaphor. We all know there are no US Kings, it's just a use of Coldplay in symbolism, and a damn good one I might add.;)

usually i don't bother to defend myself when i don't really see the need to be defended, but i might as well say that yes, it's intended to be a metaphor, and a celebration of a change in leadership under whatever kind of ruler. and as i said earlier, for right now, obama has the chance of being a savior, of working his ass off to get us at least part of the way out of this huge rut. he may suck, he may fail, he may be worse than bush ever was, but for right now, i'm willing to put all my eggs in the obama basket because its our ONLY chance, and for right now i trust him to take that chance and make something great out of it. it's all about HOPE that he'll come through and make good on his promises, and right now i have tons of that. we can't see into the future, so for right now, i'm participating in this amazing moment in history by being happy, hopeful, and excited to live in a country that has more of a chance than it's had in recent history to heal and make itself better than it's been recently.

What I worry about is the "hope".

The world media is elated over Obama's win. They act like he's actually going to make a difference, but all the indications are he won't be any different from any other politician.

At what point do people stop placing all their hope in Republicans and Democrats to solve the world's problems? How many more wars, depressions, taxes, and empty promises before Americans wake up to the fact that they've never needed government to help them?

so are you promoting anarchy? that's fine if you are, but i'm just not a proponent of it, personally. i worry about people having too much hope in the masses for that to work. i think we need some sort of guidance for society to run.

and even though i think politicians are generally slimy like the rest of the world, i don't like blanket statements about anything--i think there are exceptions to every rule. it's much too early to say if obama is one of those precious few exceptions, so no one can make any call. but for now i'm more optimistic, because it's better than living in the hole we have been. it's better to see the sun for a little while, in my opinion, to be in the shadow forever.
