Chapter 6[/size][/b]

 

 

Mirages

 

 

Guy sat on the same bench where they first met in the park for three days.

He sat there in the blistering sun.

He sat there during a torrential rain storm.

He sat there on a beautiful spring day.

Still no Julie.

He went back to the pizza place.

He went back to their first apartment.

No Julie.

Then an idea came to him.

He went back to the Farmer's Market on Sunday.

That's where he saw her.

"Strawberries?" he asked.

"Yes," she said, "You know I love them."

"What happened?" he asked, "They told me you were dead."

"I practically was," she said, "But the authorities told me I had to disappear for my own safety and to protect you."

"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked.

"I was in a coma for several weeks. By then you had already been told that I was dead and even had a funeral for me."

"What about now?" Guy asked.

"Andrew is dead. Someone killed him last week in a bar fight. So I was free to come out of hiding."

"Why didn't you just call?" Guy asked.

"I was afraid it would be too much of a shock," she said, " But I knew you would come here looking for me eventually."

"Did I really see you in all those other places?" he asked.

"Yes," she nodded, "I was following you to make sure you were okay."

"If I touch you will you disappear?" Guy asked.

She smiled.

"No, she said.

He carefully and slowly raised a hand and touched her cheek.

Then he leaned over and gently kissed her.

"See," she said, "Still here."

"Don't leave me again," he said.

"I love you," she said.

Guy smiled for the first time since Julie had been gone.
