New Doctor Who Actor To Be Revealed!

The name of the actor who will replace David Tennant as Doctor Who will be announced tomorrow, the BBC said.

Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.

His replacement - the eleventh Doctor of the TV series - will be revealed in a Doctor Who Confidential programme on BBC One at 17:35.

The casting was confirmed over Christmas and filming for the 2010 series begins in the summer.

Tennant is due to begin shooting the first of his four specials this month, just weeks after surgery on his back.

The last of these episodes is expected to run in early 2010.

The casting decision has been a priority for the show's new creative team, led by executive producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger.

The BBC said that in Saturday's Doctor Who special "the actor playing the new Doctor will be giving his or her initial reaction" to becoming TV's most famous time traveller.

Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales, said: "We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own.

"I just can't wait to tell everyone who it is - it has been a nail-biting Christmas trying to keep this under wraps!"

:stunned:

I kind of almost don't want to know....

Hopefully it will finally shut up the tabloids for a while. Except that they'll immediately start speculating about how long the new guy will stick around for.

Alan Carr's in the running, apparently................................

Note: The previous statement reflects my lack of knowledge of British actors.
:laugh3::( That's kind of sad. Especially since most of the best actors seem to be British...

You disapprove? Not ready for the first "gay" Doctor??
I don't care beans about his private life. I'm not ready for an ugly doctor who can't act.

Anyone following Tennant will have to have a huge range to be able to live up to him. Acting is what makes the old show watchable in spite of the sets costumes and effects. Acting is what keeps the modern show working even when there's a giant cgi steampunk robot stomping on London. Most of these stunt suggestions are just nonsense for headlines that would never work.

Matt Smith has been confirmed as David Tennant's successor in Doctor Who.

Aged 26, he will be the youngest ever actor to play the iconic role. His credits include political drama Party Animals and The Ruby In The Smoke, opposite former Who companion Billie Piper.

Of his casting, Smith said: "I'm flabbergasted. I haven't slept really! [Doctor Who] is an iconic part of our culture, and now I'm taking that on. It's nervewracking. Exciting. Exciting."

Smith will replace Tennant at the end of four Doctor Who specials, the last of which will air at the start of 2010. He will then go on to helm a full fifth series alongside a new companion, who is yet to be named.

Steven Moffat, who takes over from Russell T Davies as executive producer following the specials, said: "Literally from the first day, the second or third person we saw, it was him. He was spot on from the beginning.

"There is something quite old about him, so he looks quite young and old at the same time, which is important."

Tennant announced his decision to quit the long-running series in October 2008, saying that he did not want to "outstay [his] welcome". By the end of his tenure, Tennant will have appeared in three full-length series and eight specials.

I CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT I'VE JUST READ!!!!!

I saw Matt performing in "Swimming with Sharks" a year ago and when I saw that he was performing in "That Face" in June (Duke of York's) I went to see it to see him again because he was so great in "Swimming..."!!!

He is such a nice guy!

He was a bit overwhelmed when I told him that I went to see "That Face" after seeing him in the other play. :)

OMG - I have met the new Doctor Who twice already!!!!!

I guess that will become harder now...

I have a pic with him! And his autograph!

Now I have to write messages instead of calling two friends... it's just too late...

But I'm so excited!

I predicted that he will have a great career - but the new doctor... THAT IS AWESOME.

I'm so happy for him.
