Why Viva La Vida wasn't as good as AROBTTH

Featured Replies

i think you can't compare VLV with one of the other albums.

For me, every album is incomparable. Yes, the most of them got the Love-thing topic but VLV is different. it's a new sort of album. Which band created a album about war and kings before? I think no band have... and it takes a lot of courage to do that. Cause most of the fans prefere that Love-thing.

I love VLV. It's different but it's one of their best albums.

Chris wanted to expand himself lyrics wise and he did. People say Coldplay songs are rubbish lyrics it should'nt always be so obvious about love and he took that criticism and used it constructively. Its vey different album. Thats why they had Eno on board. They wanted so many colours in a short time. Something people can jump to or whistle, which in my honest opinion Radiohead have never done, so all those peolple whosay with In Rainbows they changed everything then you can well, they havent done what Coldplay have done with Viva. So I geuss Coldplay went that one step better than Radiohead. So they should win every award they are nominated for:D

I think you're taking the lyrics too literally.

Yeah, and A Rush of the Blood to the Head wasn't as good as Viva la Vida...AT SUCKING roflcopter lolcats

On A Rush of the Blood to the Head, there were a few filler songs like "Daylight" and "A Whisper" that had no particular spot on the album and didn't really do much for me at all, but on Viva la Vida, everything fit. It didn't seem like they crammed some random songs in to make the album longer.

Great point, I agree. This is what Coldplay wanted to acheive with VLV. They wanted everything to gel beautifully and it does. It never sounds a bit too much, and if it starts to then the next song is on. Like when Jonny likened it to a movie, you watch it all together. And to me, what they set out to acheive on this album is 100% correctly done.

I'm torn between Parachutes and VLVODAAHF. Sometimes I listen to their first album and feel a little down about the fact that they'll probably never make a whole album like that again (kind of young, kind of indie, etc.)

At the same time, I listen to their most recent work and I'm really happy about how they've branched out. In my opinion, it's the most cohesive album; it feels like all of the tracks take place on the same map/timeline/story rather than sharing a particular sound. I think it's really interesting, and it's one of the few albums I never play on shuffle.

I'm confident that they can keep getting better, so I think I could live without hearing a Shiver or Spies 2.0 (maybe). Even X&Y, my 'least' favorite album, has unique qualities to it that I love that none of the other albums have.

Like a lot of people have said, I think each album represents a different incarnation of them over time; I like how each one has a different sound. Some days I'm feeling a little Parachutesy, other times I'm feeling A Rush of Blood to the Head. Coldplay's the only band I've been able to listen to consistently for the past couple of years; I've had to take breaks from other bands because their albums, which sounded great, also sounded really similar to one another, and I'm the kind of person whose obsession can quickly turn into boredom when it's repetitive. But with Coldplay, I just switch over to another album. The Beatles, Radiohead and Snow Patrol are a few others for whom I can say the same.

Why is this post so long :blank: I should get a blog.

TL;DR - I'm a fickle person who can't pick a favorite Coldplay album because they all sound different. But I don't mind.

Yeah, you just have to go to the show. And if you need to find out what's behind Chris's cold eyes, you'll just claw your way through his disguise... (do-do-do-do....)

personally viva la vida has nothing on AROBTTH and Parachutes.

but it doesnt mean it was bad, just not nearly as great.

I know the two are completely different. Its just with me something is missing from VLV, that kind of showed through on PM, but not to much. Usually with most people it takes a few listens to get into music. I have never really listened to VLV too much. Maybe cause deep down I didnt like it.

Bringing in Eno, it excited me, I jumped for glee. Why? He is an unofficial member of my favorite band, U2. He helped U2, make their 4 absolutely best, historic, and downright brilliant albums. He himself in his own is a musical god.

He gave Coldplay a lot! I must say, he did wonders. I just like U2 Eno better. I have come to expect weird and far out echos and effects. Its U2, its cool. With Coldplay though...VLV doesnt feel like Coldplay. Its to overproduced. There I said it.

Eno added to many effects, I said I like Lost?, its basic stripped down, and requires nothing but Chris. Postcards From Far Away was the best track out of this year from them, its not over produced. LiT was amazing because it was so basic, yet so intriguing, and new. But Yes, was just too much for me. 42, that is now how i spell disappointment.

I do have to say I loved Prospekts March, because it seemed more back to basics. Glass of Water lyrically, was pretty good. But musically the best stuff they have produced as a whole since Politik.

Im hoping that they dont add so many effects and stuff that needs playback live. I want a good solid song. Im no longer expecting a Joshua Tree from them though. We already have it.

And on the quick topic of filler. Every album has it. Even VLV, I only listen to 3 songs from that album now.

Yes 3, was 4 till Prospekts March.

LiT - LOVE IT! But lyrics added so much

CoL - ITs good but not great, a little to overproduced.

Lost! - Not nearly as good as the acoustic piano version

42 - One of the most overhyped songs ever. I expected an Epic song like Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway type song, not to that level of epicness, but an epic the way he said it was a three part song and all that hype. I got what I expected in OCtober with Snow Patrol

Lovers In Japan/Reign Of Love - One of the three...just a great, happy upbeat song. I loved it, but wish the production was a little less. But still amazing. Reign of Love...reminds me of a parachutes song, so automatic love.

Yes - Just didnt like, that much. Like the low register, but it was better done with Prospekts March/poppyfeilds and Now My Feet Wont Touch The Ground. CSC, liked it at first, not anymore....

Viva La Vida - Easily the best track. Just perfect in my mind. This is the stuff I want more of. But with piano and guitar not strings. Still their best song live.

Violet Hill- Coldplay, Rock? Who would have thunk it? I was sufficently excited when hearing these two tracks in May, these two are the last of the three. They have the new sound to them, but also still feel like classic coldplay to me. I feel comfortable.

Strawberry Swing - Ambitious, but just never liked it.

DOAHS - Cool song, reminds me a bit of old coldplay, but it feels to forced, and to much like Fix You pt. II

i can see where u are coming from..and agree with Strawberry Swing...although i now like it much more than before...

Strawberry Swing only really grew on me after 100 listens or so. :P Now I think its one of Coldplay's top 3.

Whatever:dozey:, every song on it is still better than U2s new single, thats for sure!

I would disagree, their new single is very very good. Its just some people dont appreciate good, different music.

They use a thing called talent, and another thing called not sounding the same.

are u implying that coldplay don't have talent?

Im implying that 2008 was a easy year. Viva La Vida wouldnt hold up against U2 any day of the week.

If they do plan on a new release this year, then yay! The only thing is, the world will see why U2 are gods, and why Coldplay will just be the filler until the next big band of U2s caliber comes along.

Im implying U2 are stronger musicians then Coldplay.

fair enough but it all comes down to opinion..because to me cp are better than U2

Well then, since we are implying things, I'll imply that U2's new song is still not good to my ears and can be beaten, again in my ears, by Viva la Vida any day of the week.

I'll also imply that 2008 wasn't just some fluke and that Coldplay haven't reached their peak yet while 'talent' filled U2 are slowing down.

But those are just implications, of course. As gotcheese2768 said its all down to opinion.

Honestly as a whole Viva just feels colder and disconnected for a coldplay album. It has nothing to do with my disliking experimentation because personally I feel this is the most generic record they've produced to date. It might be different for them but its a sound I hear frequently everywhere else. And a step back from the creative and expansive pictures they used to paint with their songs. In listening to their other records I always felt a connection and an intimacy with the lyrics that is missing here. It just doesn't feel heartfelt anymore, I can almost hear him willing himself to sound "different" but writing is about whats in your heart, and if you have to reach too far, it just isn't going to seem genuine anymore. Its one thing to say your not going to put yourself in a box creatively but its another thing to restrict yourself from anything that might come naturally out of a fear that the all powerful critic machine might disapprove. Is that not just another box of a different shape?

Thanks for saying it better then me. He is constricting himself because of critics. Something he vowed not to do. Prospekts March was a bit better, ore heartfelt, but not on AROBTTH level.

And on U2, they have produced some of the best records in the last 15 years. Even their worst album sold millions of copies. I am willing to bet my first born that No Line On the Horizon will be better then anything CP can hope to release. When a guy like Daniel Lanois says this is the best album he has ever heard. You know it means something.

The thing U2 have always done that sets them apart, they did the whole experimental thing, and genuinely. Achtung Baby, was an amazing album, and completely different then the Joshua Tree. Zooropa, was a brilliant album. Pop, was pure beauty, and if you can release an album like Pop that was never completed, then you have talent.

Bono has and always will write with his heart. I also have to say Coldplay live, was very generic. I wasnt compelled by it. Not until Politik. Maybe cause it was a festival, maybe cause of where I was, just didnt feel it like I've felt it before.

Chris I beg you to givce the critics the middle finger, and write with your heart!

I do believe if they were worried about critics "Chinese Sleep Chant" wouldn't have been on the album. 'Cause it sucks. A lot. :laugh4:

You guys are all too critical. the reason we are fans is because we aren't critical.

IMO U2 is not a great band..... I never really understood all the hype of J.T. cause when i heard the album it just had like 2 good songs on it and thats it...tHE same with there other albums.....Ya VLV doesnt have the emotion that other Coldplay albums have but its way better then anything U2 has done....IMO.
