I got my mixtape already. I was trying to hold out on listening to it until I submitted mine. But I'm too tempted. Hopefully I'll post a review on it soon. And ummm.. Yeha I'm like halfway done my own... so I'll have that submittedin the next few days I think.

Here is my review...

1. With the first few seconds it sounded like a Killers - Human remix or something. Which would be mightly cool. As it goes on.. it's a good tune. I feel like I'm waiting for some major instruments to kick in... but still a nice mellowish song. I'd definately keep it in my iTunes.

2. Hmm. I really hate female vocals most of the time... so this automatically loses points. Guess that's kind of my fault. It's kind of repitive and boring. :( Don't like the voice either.

3. Ohh. This one sounds good right away. I like it, really soft and nice. Easily my favorite so far. I love it when he swears, a lot of emotion. It's really good, next time I listen to this I'm gonna read over the the lyrics at the same time. Love the feeling.

4. Female vocals again... It's definately better than track two. That being said, I dunno... not really my thing.

5. Hmm.. I dunno. A little too mellow for me I think. Might be a grower though.. So I might listen a few more times. I'll keep it in my iTunes for sure.

6. Definately an interesting sound. The folky music in the back is kind of distracting though.... not my thing for sure.

7. Hmm. I think it's okay... it's not something I'd usually listen to. But considering, its pretty okay, I like the little beat. It's good.

8. I immediately like this one at the beginning cause of the bass and thought oooh something a little rockier. But then it picked up and the lady started singing. :( Not a fan. I feel guilty that I'm not enjoying this more.

9. I don't like it.. too upbeat without enough rock. I dunno.. don't like the voice or the music.

10. I'm not really a techno/instrumental type person. But that being said, this is one of the better tracks on the mixtape for sure. I like it, it's good.

11. I guess this is my fault again... but I don't like the female vocals... And the song isn't my cup of tea.

12. It's too mellow for my tastes again..

13. This automatically earns good points for being a little bit louder. Refreshing change. Sounds a bit washed out, but that's a great effect and I really like it. Good tune.

14. Shining Light by Ash. I definately love this song. It's great. Good choice.

15. I am Indian... but I've never like Indian music or whatever. So I dunno. Not a fan. Like the riskiness of putting this on your mixtape though.

Overall, I think we have pretty different tastes but there wer definately a few songs I really enjoyed.

The best one for me was definately talk 3 which I loved. After that, I really liked track 1. And I also loved 13 and 14. Some other ones were good as well and will probably grow on me my second time around.

I think I would've liked it a bit more if I was into more mellow stuff with female vocals. :P But I dunno, I've always disliked them. So that's not your fault.

I definately liked listening to the mixtape though. Thanks for submitting it so fast.

I recieved two more links overnight and have posted them to their recipients

That was the one I made, Prospekt. Sorry you didn't get as much out of it as I'd hoped :( I feel bad, like I've not done my job properly, if that makes sense. I'm going to try again...

Is it ok to post the track list, Ali? I don't want to spoil it for you! (I sent my mixtape to Ali too as she said she wasn't taking part due to an uneven number of participants).

Please post the tracklist... I've sent you a PM about it... I really want to know who sang what because I haven't heard most of them and need to head over to ITunes fast!!!:)

i hope i've finished mine for next weekend. :)

good to know that there are 3 already

I'm afraid my partner is not going to like it :P

So Fixed let me listen to his Mix as I don't have a partner. Here's what I thought:

Track 1 – Not got a clue who it is... have a feeling I’ll be saying that a lot. But I like it – quite dramatic, good vocals, and I like the violin

Track 2 – Another new one for me. Love the vocals and the way the song twists in the middle. Kind of upbeat but mellow at the same time

Track 3 – Male singer, in my head this would count as folksy, so I’m going to guess Seth Lakeman, ‘cos I know you like him and he’s the only folk name I know Am I making a complete fool of myself here? Anyway, like his voice, really nice tune, and would definately lie to hear more by him/them (?)

Track 4 –This is beautiful. Really mellow (I need to find a new word, I use that too often), and I love the girls voice. Would like to hear more of this artist/group (?)

Track 5 – Elbow, right? I don’t listen to them as much as I should. I love Guy Garvey’s voice. Their tracks are always so atmospheric. I only have AITB and TSSK ... will have to find the album this is on.

Track 6 – More folk, or what my uneducated head would call folk. Really different to the stuff in my cd collection, but I like it.

Track 7 – This is on an advert but I can’t think which one and that’s really bugging me! Anyway, it’s nice to hear the lyrics. Not sure I’d want to hear a whole album, it’s maybe a bit too quirky, or paybe it’s just cos I’ve heard it so much on tv...

Track 8 – My least favourite so far. It’s not bad, but I’m not a fan of the singers voice. It’s a good, upbeat tune though.

Track 9 – This feels familiar, but maybe it’s just reminscent of someone else. Anyway, I really like it. Quirky, fast tempo, sounds old but I suspect it isn’t.

Track 10 – Now you’ve completely thrown me... but in a good way! I’m not a huge fan of dance, and wasn’t expecting a track like this, but this is ok. I’m tempted to say Chemical Bros. But I may be wrong. I recognise, and like it. And a piece of electronica is a pleasant surprise.

Track 11 – Not an immediate hit, but it will probably grow on me. I can’t make out the vocals very well, and there are so many great singers on this mix, that it kinds of stands out because of that.

Track 12 – First tie I’ve ever been tempted to say “Meh..”. It’s inoffensive, it just doesn’t grab me like most of the others. Again, I can’t make out the vocals that well, and that kinda bugs me (it’s why I don’t like Chinese Sleep Chant too)

Track 13 – A real change in mood. A bit heavier than what I’d usually listen to but I really like it. If it wasn’t for the fact the voice doesn’t sound familiar, I’d have a guess at Oasis. Love the backing vocals

Track 14 – Ah... Ash... takes me back to my student days (yes, I am that old!) It’s a modern classic, and great to hear the original as that Annie Lennox version doing the rounds at the mo is annoying me

Track 15 – Well you are full of surprises aren’t you! I have no idea what style of music this would be classed as because I am painfully uneducated where music is concerned. The word that comes to my naive little head is Bollywood – I know that’s not a style of music, but I’m guessing it’s Indian, right? Would never normally listen to something like this, but I really like it, and it’s a fab way to end your mix.

Thank you so much for sharing this with me. It encapsulates the genius of the Mixtape Exchange – it’s introduced me to so much music that I would normally ignore. I look forward to reading the playlist so I can go off and discover more gems!

Thank you to both of you for your comments :) Here's the track list:

01 Ghost Under Rocks – Ra Ra Riot

Discovered this band through Sara's (from Tegan and Sara) Top 10 Albums Of 2008 list. Hymnal, lots of strings, nice backing vocals. And it has the line, "soaking wet dreams". Yeah baby.

Album: The Rhumb Line

02 Summertime – Jesca Hoop

She supported Elbow on their Winter 2008 tour. The title says it all - summer, fields, hills, sun, warmth and all things lovely. And a beautiful, dreamy voice.

Album: Kismet

03 State Of The Union – David Ford

"Heroine tastes like ice cream". I love how this goes from this to THIS, but, I can never quite figure out how, why or when, as by the time it's HERE, I've already lost myself in David's train of thought. Passion. Listen to the delivery of the words in this. It's not sugarcoated. It's raw and it's real and it's right there in your ears.

Album: I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I've Caused

04 Love Show - Skye

Former lead singer of trip-hop band, Morcheeba. This makes me think of the city at night, walking though streets, thinking of life and love and all that. That's really soppy isn't it.

Album: Mind How You Go

05 Switching Off – Elbow

This made me cry a couple of weeks ago. It's incredibly beautiful.

Album: Cast Of Thousands.

06 Lady Of The Sea – Seth Lakeman

If you're not sure about folk, give this guy a listen; he may just change your whole perception of the genre.

Album: Freedom Fields

07 Be Gentle With Me – The Boy Least Likely To

This is from the ING Direct advert. It's just a really cute song.

Album: The Best Party Ever

08 Closer – Josephine Oniyama

I've honestly not heard anyone else like this girl. Soulful-bluesy-folk? Maybe. Whatever it is, I like it! Her debut album will hopefully be released some time this year.

EP: In The Labyrinth EP

09 The Magic Position – Patrick Wolf

This boy's a genius. Electro-folk kind of thing.

Album: The Magic Position

10 Star Guitar – The Chemical Brothers

The sounds they make are crazy. You need to listen to them through headphones, on a train. Speaking of trains, the video for this is wonderful.

Album: Come With Us

11 The Con – Tegan and Sara

The obvious track to use would probably have been Back In Your Head, which features a great piano line. But I wanted to try something different. Amazing album - short, to the point, everything's there for a reason, they leave you wanting so much more.

Album: The Con

12 Chorus Of Wolves – Woodpigeon

Can't put my finger on why I like this band so much. They make me think of Canada. Probaby because they're from Canada.

Album: Songbook

13 Blind – Embrace

Yes, this is Embrace and it's one of their best tracks. It surprises quite a few people too. Listen to Rik McNamara's demonic howling, listen to the guitar in this track, achieved by swinging a microphone around the studio while he unleashed hell, listen to Danny's mental use of made-up words; wtf does "engulfophobia man" mean?! I don't know, but it's ace.

EP: Fireworks EP

14 Shining Light – Ash

What can I say about this? It's great isn't it.

Album: Free All Angels

15 Jai Ho – A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack)

Great soundtrack for a great film. This plays while the credits are rolling - joy, love, dancing. Spectacular!

Album: Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack

I feel really dumb for not spotting Skye & Embrace :dozey:

Also gutted that I missed Jessica Hoop at the Elbow gig - I just had loads of work to do and decided to just show up for the main event... then traffic meant I missed the frist two songs anyway, but that's another story.

I've heard some Teagan & Sara before and hated them - so you've improved my initial opinion of them.

Thanks for the track list... I'm off to ITunes right now! :smug:

FIXED! I really like your mix... I knew of only 2 of the artists on it, Elbow (of coarse) and Seth Lakeman. Both were on my 2008 top 10 list for best album. Needless to say this intrigued me even more to download the mix. Very nice! I liked all of your choices and appreciated the way you changed things up. I keeps my interest. Female performers and vocalist may not be for everone and thats fine. I really like to hear a sultry, sexy song from the oposite gender evey now and then.

I hope you are not the only participant to post a link to their mix. :wink3: I really enjoy listening to as many as I can...

I'm listening to mine right now, and so far, somebody's done a really good job. =3

Edit:

Most of the time, I didn't really know what to put. I tried, and that's what counts. I think.

Track 1 - Pretty and acoustic. I like it, and it's only half a minute in. Now a clear, pretty girl voice, yay... Sounds familiar. Ahh, pretty guitar part. I love how lullaby-ish it is. It's also a song I can imagine myself driving to (if I had a car), dunno why.

Track 2 - I like the way the vocals all sort of blend together but maintain their own sound. I mean, I can pick them apart, but all the different singers' voices go together. The guitar could be taken out of the song, and it would still be neat.

Track 3 - The guy's voice kind of throws me off, but who knows what the next few minutes will bring? I don't know. I can't say I don't like it, but at the same time, it's not something that automatically catches my interest. It's pretty magnificent-sounding, that's neat. Wait. These strings kicking up really add something. I don't know what it is. Forget what I've written. I like it now.

Track 4 - It sounds all 80's-ish. It's weird and funky. Woo, I wanna dance. It's not bad, but it's not what I'd usually listen to. And now it gets loud and becomes something I think I like. Yeah, I like it. It's neat. I think I love it.

Track 5 - Smashing Pumpkins. Dunno what song, but I can tell by Billy Corgan's voice. This was somewhat unexpected.

Track 6 - Weird. Sounds all schizophrenic. Interesting, though. I don't really know what to say. A bass kicked in. It's sounding worse, not the song, but I mean whatever's happening in the song. It's gritty, I like it.

Track 7 - I love this guy's voice. I like this song. It's mellow, but has a sort of anxious feeling to it, even if it's meant to sound sort of passive. What the hell am I talking about? Anyway, it's nice. I have an obsession with strings, so now I really love this song. Ooh, a piano. Could it get better? Yes, because I think I hear brass. Yes. I do. Greatness.

Track 8 - Flutes...clarinets...hand claps...a build-up? This reminds me of I'm from Barcelona for some reason. Probably the clarinets. Makes me happy. I don't know how I feel about this song. It's nice, but it's one of those songs that I'd have on my iPod because it's neat and I kind of life it but I never listen to it anyway.

Track 9 - Somebody likes acoustimagic. I don't know what that meant. AHH! The voices sound far away. It's playing tricks with my mind. It's sort of cheery and optimistic in its own, eccentric way. Or at least that's the way it sounds. It takes me a few listens before I start to analyze lyrical content in songs.

Track 10 - Sounds like oldies. Ha ha. It's probably supposed to sound like it's on the...ah, radio. It's interesting. I don't really know what else to say about it.

Track 11 - Uh...this is different. I don't really like it. The music...and her voice...it's just...I don't know. Not my thing.

Track 12 - Mmm, makes me sleepy. More pretty singing. AHH. I'm not sleepy anymore. It just asploded into anthemic greatness!

Track 13 - Tumors, yummy. She's one of those quirky songstresses, isn't she? I don't usually go for that (except in the case of Regina Spektor), but she's got such a pretty voice I can't help but like it.

Track 14 - This is cool. Sounds really familiar. It's really different, and even though it's a quiet sort of song, it's not boring. Things keep popping in, like a little violin bit, or another vocal part, and it's just nice.

I received a couple more mixes overnight and have sent them on to their recipients... :)

First of all, My english is not very good and I don't know many terms about music. My review may sound clumsy... sorry. I loved it, really. In fact, it's similar to mine.

Track 1

The Decemberists, for sure.

Yup, I recognized it inmediatly. I love it, one of my favorites from Castaways. The lyrics are genious, brilliant and very creative.

Track 2 This one sounds familiar… but I don’t know who he/they are :embarrassed: I like it… It’s kinda folky. It’s growing on me! I like the guy’s voice and the music is lovely.

Track 3 “You don’t know me at all” It’s what I heard. There’s a man and a woman singing, with a few strings and a popish background. Nice Song.

Track 4 Reminds me of track 3 for some reason. Nice tune.

Track 5 Not very impressive, but it’s not bad. Catchy at the end.

Track 6 Fleet Foxes!!!! Wooo! What can I say? They’re awesome.

Track 7 Final Fantasy/ Owen Pallet Right? He’s such a great musician! Awesome Violins!!!! I love this song so much <3 Again, I love the violin parts, freshing. At this point, this Mixtape is very similar to mine.

Track 8 Cool Song, nice chorus, very enjoyable. Very catchy, I like it.

Track 9 I hear strings, and a guy’s voice, kinda low. Calm song, beautiful.

Track 10 BEIRUT!!! <333 I love his music, in fact, I’ve been in a Beirut phase all this month <333 I love the trumpets… just brilliant. Makes me want to dance and drink, really.

Track 11 Who’s her? I really like this song, nice strings and her voice sounds pretty! Is it Regina Spektor? The vocals are great! I love the vocals again! Beautiful.

Track12 Owen Pallet Again! I really need to listen to him more, he’s awesome. This song is catchy, the flutes and violins are brilliant, as always.

Track 13 Calm Song, lovely. The vocals are pretty good too. Quiet, and relaxing

Track 14 Gogol Bordello?. Love them. This song is just brilliant. The drums, the flutes and the “Uh Ah” makes it sound exotic and funny. Pretty Cool. Their Characteristic sound. “UH AH UH HIYA”

Track 15 Nice, again. Don’t know who is he, again. This song is beautiful, I’m starting to love his voice.

Track 16 A man singing, then a guitar. Awww This one is lovely, the voice+the music is awesome. Cannot wait to see his name.

Track 17 Sufjan Stevens, one of my favorite artists. The guitar on this one is great, the lyrics and the chorus are awesome. Folky and Rocky, he’s awesome, brilliant.
