Well, no-one has been in touch to say they can't produce a mix, so I'm assuming the final nine are on their way to me...

Fingers crossed!

I'm just about to start making mine. Will be sending it tomorrow, yay!

Also, I still didn't get my mixtape .... Mixtape-maker, where art thou?

Haven't received mine yet, as well! Still waiting..

Lana, if I don't get mine I'll review yours from the last round because I forgot about it until now! >_<

I've listened to my mix a few times now, ready to write my review.

Two things: English is not my language. I know embarrassingly little about music, so when I say things like "violin" and "jazzy" it's feelings rather than facts.

01 - Nice rhythm, jazzy, mellow. Good first track, interesting and open, wondering which direction this mix will take.

02 - Yes, here comes more noise, more of everything, makes me smile immediately. Tempo varies, good thing.

The voice sounds so familiar, I should probably know who this is.

03 - Slightly similar to the previous song. I really like this voice, it's deeper, rougher, goes well with what I hear of the lyrics.

04 - Starts with a bass - oh sweet memories! and then a voice talking. This mix gets better with every song.

Heavier guitars and is that a violin? That's a surprise, love it. Can't wait to read the lyrics. Really very good one.

05 - A bit more held back, good song to follow no 4. The kind that makes me drum along the first time I hear it.

Something interesting happens at the end that I can't describe, it changes and ends with a warning signal.

06 - I really like the messy noisy instrumental parts, good contrast to the nicer voice. It's dark, it's got a pulse, this is my city at night.

4 and 6 are my favourites so far.

07 - Hmm... there are things I don't like. Like the voice, let it out of the can! But my first note was "I think it will grow on me" and it has.

First I thought it was too smooth, but now I hear other things. Interesting one.

08 - What?! Oh no. First thought, but just for a second. I absolutely love this.

It's what I'd call electronica (again, feeling not fact). I never listen to this kind of music.

It's crazy and I do hope this is a band with a good sense of humour, it could be fantastic live.

I love how it rises to chaos, pain, no, help, aaaaa - and then back. I wish it was at least twice as long, I wanna dance!

09 - A bit of reggae, and more. My partner must have humour, funny song, funny lyrics. Another favourite. Fashionable!

10 - I've been listening to The Scripts lately and this song has that nice, warm, mellow... argh, what's the word?! Feeling?

Nodding my head, dancing. Again a violin, with a very good solo at the end, a bit messy which is good, could have been too sweet without it.

11 - Laid-back, jazzy. Again a good combination with the previous, let's keep this good feeling for a while. Ba-ba-pa-pa... I'm singing.

Very good singer, sounds like one I use to listen to but this one's new to me. I think.

12 - Left me quite unaffected the first times but starts to grow on me. I can't say exactly what is wrong, maybe I need to read the lyrics.

It's a good song, I wish it was longer, something's missing.

13 - Love the bass here. Good song, very good chorus. I want to hear more from this band, if they can create even more of that riot they want it could be great.

My first notes says it will grow on me - yup!

14 - It's a siren, it's snow, it's California, the world is changing. I really like that siren, I like the unexpected.

Another song that makes me wanna dance, but in a quite different way than no 8. One track left, how will this end?

15 - Aaah nice, I want a car. It's not a song for the highway, but imagine driving through the desert or along the ocean. Open spaces.

What is it that makes a song mellow without being boring? This one on repeat and I won't stop smiling. Perfect ending.

So that's it. A very good mixtape with music that I normally don't listen to, couldn't name any of the bands.

Which is great, lots of bands I want to hear more from (of?). I'm so tired now, can't even find the typos and spellos.

One of the participants planned to make a mix with a theme, I wonder if this is it?

The songs go so well together but not in a boring way and there are a few that really stands out.

Thank you so much mystery mixer! You did a great job! Now tell me who they are please :)

That was mine :)

I'll write down the songs in a minute.

So my mixtape was for chipotle. I tried to do a little music research on her to see what sort of things she listened to. Looks like she likes the Red Hot Chili Peppers quite a bit, and Coldplay. And also noticed she wasn't from North America. So I chose to make the theme for here...Canada!

1. Jason Collett - Fire

Idols of Exile

A great singer from Ontario, he writes great lyrics and has a nice voice, sometimes he's compared to Bob Dylan. I hear elements of Wilco in his stuff as well. He's a member of Broken Social Scene as well. This is one of my favourite songs by him, I love the backing female vocals and the use of brass instruments over beautiful lyrics.

2. Pilate - Into Your Hideout

Caught By The Window

Another band from Ontario, they're now known as Pilot Speed. They definitely draw heavily on Coldplay and Radiohead, and some people think that vocally he sounds similar to Thom Yorke which is true at times. This is a great up beat song and ridiculously catchy.

3. Constantines - Brother Run Them Down

Kensington Heights

Another uptempo song. I don't listen to all that many "rock" albums, but for some reason I love this one. Its just so refreshing and not bland like a lot of rock. Love the aggressive raspy vocals, great guitars, great drums. Pretty much everything you want in a rock song.

4. Hey Rosetta! - Yes!Yes!Yes!

Plan Your Escape

I love this band to pieces, they're from Newfoundland (the province where I was born). I saw them live twice last year and have been hooked ever since. Tim Baker is a great frontman, very passionate and a great song writer. And yes, you're right, that is violin! They have a violin player and a cello player which gives them a unique sound.

5. Broken Social Scene - Cause=Time

You Forgot It In People

I had a hard time picking which BSS song to put on because they have so many great songs performed by so many different awesome artists. This was one of the first songs I loved by them. A great drumbeat goes throughout and then by the end it just errupts into beautiful chaos with guitars, stings, crashing cymbals....then slows down again. Pure genius.

6. Apostle of Hustle - Dark Is What I Want/Strutters Ball

Folkloric Feel

Also a member of Broken Social Scene. Glad you liked the messy intro and the dark pulse. Cool you can relate to it (your city at night). I always picture this song being played at a dark club at night where everybody is dancing but afraid or something. Another Coldplayer told me she liked this song, so I was hoping you would as well.

7. Brendan Canning - Churches Under the Stairs

Something For All of Us

Yet another member of Broken Social Scene. I was hoping that you wouldn't think all these songs sound the same :P. He's their main bass player, but I think he does a great job vocally on this album although they are pretty different. This song grew on me after a few listens. What clinches it for me is the part around 3:12 when all the vocals just burst in together.

---------------Hometown break: bands from my city (Halifax) and/or province (Nova Scotia)------------

8. Holy F*** - Royal Gregory

Holy F***

These guys are awesome, I've wanted to see them live but can never find anybody to go with me. I guess at their live shows they don't have a setlist or anything, they just improvise as they go. Its cool, they have the electronica sound yet make all these sounds with instruments. And yes, this song is too short, it makes you want to dance for days.

9. Joel Plaskett - Fashionable People

Ashtray Rock

This guy went to the same highschool as me (a few years before me though) and he is a hometown hero. This album has alot of songs about the neighbourhood I live in which is pretty cool. He writes fun songs as he "has a wicked sense of humor". Look up the video on youtube. You'll have a good laugh.

10. Plants and Animals - Good Friend

Parc Avenue

They're based in Montreal now, but some of the members are from Halifax. Kind of a longer song, but not boring. Has some great lyrics and honest sounding vocals. Kind of makes you feel sad or long for something, I'm not sure. The chorus "I wanna dance" is very catchy.

11. Feist - One Evening

Let It Die

Probably my favourite female vocalist out there. She only lived in Nova Scotia for a short time as a child, but she always gets a warm reception here. A great jazzy sounding song. Makes you want to dress up (but not too fancy) and go dancing with somebody special.

12. Astronaut - Wintersleep

Welcome To The Midnight Sky

This was probably the "riskiest" song to put on the mixtape. There were other safer songs from the album I could put on. But I felt this was a good one for this mixtape. His vocals are pretty dark and haunting, but unique. I recommend checking this whole album out.

-----------------End Hometown Break--------------

13. Stars - Take Me To The Riot

In Our Bedroom After the War

I didn't really like this song all that much until I heard it live. The opening bass is very powerful. These guys write "melodramatic love songs". Sometimes they're cheesey, but I love the way they combine the vocals of frontman Torquil and frontwoman Amy Milan (member of BSS). I love the way the song builds up to the chorus, then quiets right down again.

14. The Stills - Snow In California

Oceans Will Rise

I also love the siren at the begining. Still not sure what the song is about, but I love it. Very catchy. I love the vocals too, they almost sound painful but very honest.

15. Young Galaxy - Wailing Wall

Young Galaxy

I think you'll find the name of the band is very fitting for the music they write. This song is very sad I find. But I love this band, one of the lesser known bands that I absolutely love to listen to. They write very emotional sounding songs I find.

I thought it was a perfect ending for this mixtape.

So glad you liked it. I'll add the download link here.

oh my god... my review, my damn computer crashed the explorer, I hope it fixes on some minutes, if not I'm gonna suicide for not being able to click the damn post quick reply button at time

*cries*

Thank you Briggins! :)

And thank you for writing a bit about all the bands/artist, I was hoping you would do that.

I meant to guess the theme but I forgot to write that. I wouldn't have guessed Canada though.

So you stalked me? :laugh3:

Yeah, I guess I've mentioned the Peppers a few times here. They're my first but not only love. The mix I made for someone will tell.

I was afraid my favourite no 8 would be your own or a local band and I would never get to hear more from them, but guess what?!

They're streaming their music on Spotify so I can listen to them now  Yay!

I wish I could go with you to see them, I so want to see this band live. If you can't find company, please go alone and tell me about it ;)

When I first heard this song I thought it might be !!! (chk chk chk). I've seen them live in a small club and it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

Thanks again! I love my mixtape.

*cries*

aaah

I'm gonna shot myslef!

fucking pc

an advice: write it on a txt file, them copy and past it here.

a little too late

First I lost the upload link, then I struggled to delete the info of the song and spent like 1 hour, then realized I had to delete songs and spent like half hour deciding which, then saw that despite that there were some extra minutes, hten I had problems playing my mixtape and now this :bigcry:

I guess my deleting song info didn't work either....I did it all, I guess it just didn't save or something. Oh well!

Whoa, nice mixtape, Briggins! I'd love to hear it!

Well, I got my link and this is what it said....

Error

The file could not be found. Please check the download link.

Anyway the sender could re up it?

I know I had to upload mine for a 2nd time, so hopefully Alison sent my person the 2nd link.

Where was it uploaded?

For anyone that hasn't sent their mixtape yet (or if their links are broken) I suggest mediashare or sendspace. Rapidshare and yousendit are risky.

Of course.

Maybe we should also add a list of recommended uploading websites to the next signup thread. :)

durr. Uploading failed. :bomb: Trying again.

Anyway, I'm over being sick, I'm through the worst of the homework crunch, and I've finished my mix, which means I can finally go listen to the one I got one last time to give a proper review in the very near future. :D
