Both great bands!! I don't think you should be saying one is better than the other though...

Let me say this though: How many hit singles did U2 have in their first decade? ;)

U2 (first decade):

I Will Follow

New Year's Day

Sunday Bloody Sunday

Pride (In The Name Of Love)

With Or Without You

Where The Streets Have No Name

I Still Haven't Found...

One Tree Hill

Desire

All I Want Is You

------10 hit singles-------

Coldplay (first decade)

Shiver

Trouble

Yellow

In My Place

Clocks

The Scientist

Speed Of Sound

Talk

Fix You

Violet Hill

Viva La Vida

Lost!

Life In Technicolor ii

-----15 hit singles give or tack 2 or 3-----

Die hard U2 fans are just angry that a band like Coldplay is threatening the popularity of one of the biggest bands on the planet (which simply isn't true). Coldplay is amazing. U2 is amazing. They both have admitted being inspired by one another. I can tell you both artists perform WAY differently.

FOR THE RECORD, Bono thinks that Coldplay is great.

Can I ask you what is your criteria for hit singles ?. I mean I will follow didn't chart anywhere , yet is a hit single ? and you are missing quite a lot of them too :\

I have to honestly say, I've never actually heard the sounds a dying raccoon makes, so trying to compare that Chris Martin's singing is for me at least impossible. :laugh3:

CP vs. U2, clearly it's like comparing strawberries to chocolate, which is to say both are really really exceptionally great.

One's got a Strawberry Swing, the other has got Fudge Sundaes! :P

(I think it's clear that U2's singles did better) I also hear all of those songs on the radio ALL OF THE TIME on different radio stations, so that tells me that they were pretty big singles.

U2 doesn't have as many singles as Coldplay, but the singles they did have were really successful. Coldplay has a lot of great music, but the singles didn't do AS well as U2.

It's safe to say, though, that competition in the music market has changed substantially over the past 30 years and there have been many other great artists other than Coldplay this past decade (In my personal opinion Coldplay is the best).

It was only when U2 released Joshua did they beat their competition by a large margin. Joshua Tree (Their fifth album) happened to be their breakout album which catapulted them into superstardom. They only cemented their status as rock legends when they released their seventh album (Achtung Baby... in their second decade) because Rattle & Hum didn't do as well.

Coldplay's breakout album is hard to define... Yellow was a huge single, but I still have to say that their second album was their best album.

Coldplay also hasn't had a flop. U2 had a flop in their first decade. That was the album 'October'.

Listen, I'm not saying one band is better than the other. I'm only trying to prove they're both great bands and they both respect eachother.

And SERIOUSLY?!?! There is this accusatory copy-cat allegation that Coldplay has had for a LONG TIME! Personally, I see a huge difference, but even if there were striking similarities here's this example: The Kinks and The Beatles sound alike; Led Zeppelin and AC/DC sound alike; Soundgarden, Creed, Stone Temple Pilots, and Nickelback all sound alike!

It's simply just that people don't like Coldplay which is OKAY. But THEN they have to go further to prove their point and they come up with BULL like these arguments.

In conclusion to this... rant? I would like to repeat they're both great, and if you don't like Coldplay that's fine! but you need to get over it.

Well , You are comparing different charts though. I mean peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 isn't the same as having a number one on top rock tracks. Having a top 5 on the top rock charts has become quite easy for coldplay to achieve and this days it's quite easy

If you wanna compare u2's HIT songs , compare them on the billboard Hot 100 that is practically the only one that matters lol

Over the 80's u2 got 12th Hot 100 entries . The ones that got to the top 40 ( that can be considerated modarate hits) are :

-Pride (in the name of love) #33

-With or without you #1

- I still haven't found what im looking for #1

-Where the streets have no name #13

- Desire #3

- Angel of harlem #14

And that's pretty much it. At the begining i thought you were comparing them on the UK charts

-Clocks 29

-Speed of sound 8

-Violet Hill 40

-Lost! 40

-viva la vida 1

-Christmas lights 25

-ETIAW 14

Without saying that Viva la vida ranks among the best selling digital tracks of all time and that Coldplay's digital figures are much bigger than u2's.

About the recurrent airplay for u2's songs , yeah. They are played quite a lot. They used to be both , big album and single sellers , though they have declined a little bit but still fine

They did have flopish albums , but they have mantained their career for 30 years that it's quite an achivement for itself. and to be honest NLOTH did amazingly for being an album 30 years after their start.

IMO coldplay is a bigger band now a days but U2 are already legends lol. They can not be called as has-beens or things of that nature. Their cultural impact is bigger than coldplay's and will remain one of the most influencial bands in this times .. hopefully with time Coldplay will be able to become one of those . Which im quite sure that if they continue that way they will

In the meantime they can continue to storm the music charts  . Keeping the likes of Ke$ha out of the top spot:cool:

And what? I'm a coldplay fan lol. It just seemed wierd cause you put singles that hadn't chated in the UK singles charts or the US charts ( like I will follow ) , I thought you were looking at the UK OOC charts or the Billboard hot 100 charts and you weren't

I guess I can't really compare both :P Sorry. It's kind of obvious the digital figure are bigger! Lol.

Ugh, here we go again with another one of these threads...

Whether U2 or Coldplay are better is all a matter of opinion. Neither is better than the other. It all depends on who you talk to.

What a pointless waste of time.

Both great bands!! I don't think you should be saying one is better than the other though...

You forgot Out Of Control, Another Day, 11 O'Clock Tick Tock, A Day Without Me, Gloria, Fire, Two Hearts Beat As One, The Unforgettable Fire, In God's Country, When Love Comes To Town, and Angel Of Harlem. So make it 21. :D

Wait, wait, wait. Okay I'll let in In God's Country and MAYBE Angel Of Harlem, :D but you can't seriously say that the rest of those singles were BIG can you? Gloria? When Love Comes To Town?Seriously?

Alright maybe not Fire, 11 O'Clock, Another Day, and A Day Without Me, but Gloria, Two Hearts, The Unforgettable Fire, and when Love Comes To Town were HUGE especially now they get tons of radio play

GLORIA?!?!?!

Okay, weeelllll if we're going this route then I forgot to mention Don't Panic, God Put A Smile Upon Your Face, The Hardest Part and Lovers In Japan!! 5 more that I hear all of the time! Even! Ha! :D

BTW this thread has gotten me listening to all of my U2 again... which is good because it distracts me from the excitement of waiting for Coldplay news.

Yes Gloria! I hear it all the time on Sirius.

awesome comparison :daisy:

Let's see Coldplay pull off a tour to the magnitude of the 360 tour when they are 30 years into their career!

lol NEVER!! That was an awesome show! HOLY CRAP I went crazy. I went to their concert the day those craaazy religious people starting saying the rapture is coming. Basically Bono said, "So, let's party like it's the end of the world!" And then they played Until The End Of The World from Achtung Baby. It was pretty much glorious.

Who resurrected this thread? Be weary as it will get some people's underwear in a knot here.

Can't really compare the two bands outside of the fact that Coldplay has probably been the greatest contender at taking U2's mantle of biggest rock band in the world.

While Coldplay was obviously influenced by U2, within the rock spectrum they are very different and always will be. Coldplay still have not reached U2's critical or commercial heights though, and that isn't an opinion - it's just a fact. You can like Coldplay more (as I do), but you can't dispute that U2 was bigger in their heyday than Coldplay are at this point.

Maybe this next album will really catapult them to the top, but I don't know. I hope so!

^At least you talk rationally. Most people on here don't.

lol, I saw them in Philly. Awesome show :D
