🌙 COLDPLAY ANNOUNCE MOON MUSIC OUT OCTOBER 4TH 🎵

U2 vs. Coldplay

As a U2 fan, I came on here to see whats up in the Coldplay world. I was shocked to see so many U2 disses. Especially since Coldplay tries so very hard to be as good as U2 (Chris Martin putting a picture of U2 up in the studio, and his reason ``to be the best, you have to beat the best``). Even worse is when Coldplay tries to BE U2. It`s pathetic how much your guitarist rips off The Edge, and how Chris Martin tries to get his Bono on. Chris Martin makes me cringe with embarrassment every time he tries to act like Bono live. It`s so bad I have to change the channel. Whether he`s singing ``come on love`` at the beginning of Yellow, or wandering into the crowd live, it`s all him trying to be like Bono. You guys have to admit that when singing live he sounds like a dying racoon, and he is not comfortable in his own skin. I could name a million other rip offs, but I don`t have that much time...

what do you guys think about this

Actually, there are a lot of U2 fans here. Visit the U2 thread and see for yourself. Not everyone here prefers Coldplay to U2.

Please don't come here just to start pointless arguing. Everyone has their own opinion. It's a waste of time to try to change that. If you think U2 is a billion times better than Coldplay and that Coldplay sucks, fine, you are entitled to your preference. We are entitled to ours as well. So please, if all you want to do is fight, leave.

yeah, this guy is just bored I think.. there's no point in trying to say that U2 is better than Coldplay just saying that coldplay is pathetic...

U2 is awesome, so is Coldplay... if you don't like coldplay, this is not the place to be (at least this section)

U2 is good. i don't really listen to them a lot, but i deffinitely respect them. im sorry you think that Chris Martin sounds like a dying racoon. I know some other people think of Chris the way you do, but if you were to actually look into it, you'd see that he's a very real person. I'm not asking you to though, obviously you're not a coldplay fan and that's fine. You're missing out though :P ;)

well coldplay is def. my #1 fav. band and U2 is prolly 2nd for me!! i love them both...and thats terrible to say that Chris tries to rip off Bono on stage! i know they get compared alot but seriously they are so dif. too!!

and really there are a lot of ppl here who love U2 also..

its very pointless and annoying when ppl join fansites when they are not even a fan :dozey:

ok heres the thing, i think coldplay is a really good studio band. rush of blood to the head had some amazing songs, warning sign and amsterdam were the best in my opinion. what made those songs so good is that it was coldplay being coldplay. i just wish chris martin stayed in the ``yellow`` mode, where he was being himself.

the reason why i posted this was because a lot of people here went out of their way to take a swipe at u2. one guy even wrote in his signature since he couldnt find the u2 vs. coldplay thread, he wanted to say how shit u2 were, yadda yadda...

does anyone here at least agree chris martin is very awkward on stage and when singing live has the voice of an animal caged up with a bad case of rabies

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!! I think Chris is very original and brilliant on stage..ive seen coldplay live and i have also seen U2 life and no Chris does not sound like he has rabbies...:(

im sorry if u were offended that someone said that U2 was shit but i really love U2 also.

but saying Chris sucks on stage, is just untrue...esp. if u havent been to one of thier concerts

:\

well that guy is one person, but most of us really enjoy U2. making a generalization, we have absolutely nothing against them.

Yeah, that was just one person. Don't assume everyone here is a U2 hater just because of that.

I actually happen to think that most Coldplay fans like U2 as well, and are being very objective when talking about the 2 bands, as you can see in this thread. Yours, however, is a very biased point of view. For instance, saying: "does anyone here at least agree chris martin is very awkward on stage and when singing live has the voice of an animal caged up with a bad case of rabies" is no way to start a U2 vs Coldplay debate on a Coldplay forum. It's one thing for Coldplay fans to preserve an objective tone, but when you post something like this, you can expect the talk to take a tricky turn. And why would anyone want that? I mean, we could forever find silly names to define Bono and Chris's singing, style or whatever, but to what end? We're all mature people here, right?

That having been said, I'm both a Coldplay and a U2 fan. it's just that, as someone else here said, I enjoy Coldplay better. AND I've seen Coldplay perform and Chris Martin is just great on stage, his singing and the way he relates to the audience. That is pure entertainment.

P.S.: Funny that I see this post today, cause I've just watched Celebrity Death Match: Bono vs Chris Martin, on MTV, and it was HILARIOUS!!

That's kind of like asking Bono to stay in the Boy/October mode. A great band has the ability to reinvent itself, which both bands have done (for better or worse). Now it's clear that Coldplay is heavily influenced by U2, but there are strong, objective differences between them. It's also the similarities that make both bands so great, such as their pursuit of such strong anthemic sounds, experimentation between albums, and electric guitar as a way of supporting the singer as opposed to gunslinging as the Edge put it...

Idiots are unavoidable. Naturally one can't vouge for every fan, and their are definitely a lot of coldplay fans that make me cringe. But as you see from this thread, there is absolutely no bad blood between our two bands.

LOL, he tends to get a bit too enthusiastic, like when he's performing at award shows to try to liven the atmosphere. During X&Y he got in a habit of running and singing at the same time, which didn't help, but overall he's actually improving. If you don't believe me, check out some clips from their live 2003 DVD in Sydney. His vocals are virtually perfect throughout with the exception of Yellow, where he started jumping around. He definitely sings better when he's playing an instrument.

well, I am a really really big U2 fan and have been an great fan of coldplay for a few years now.

I did feel that, with X&Y, coldplay was trying to hard to be a great band (like u2).

But, this new album and tour have really showed that they are coldplay...not a "wanna be u2" band.

I think that the small similarity to u2's music simply comes from the fact that they, themselves, are u2-fans...and those things always creap in to your own music. That's the music you love...so, that's the sound you love...therefore, you create things like it.

I've seen coldplay live a number of times now and it's very hard to compare their performance to u2's performance. Both bands have a VERY different sound live and both singers have a total different personality.

I do not agree about Chris Martin sounding like some weird animal live. His voice has always amazed me, it's extremely original and in a league of it's own. I love it, it's not the clearest, most educated voice out there, but that's the charme. This is someone singing from the heart..not from standard singing patterns. Some people won't like it...that's ok..but for me, it's magic.

Furthermore, there's a big difference in the bands presence on stage as compared to U2. Coldplay centers much more around a band-feeling, while U2 clearly have The Edge and Bono as frontmen. Both are ok. Also, Johhny has a very own sound..sure, he borrowed some effects from Edge, but there's no way that you would mistake johhny for the edge, or vice versa.

Last, but no least. Chris Martins performance on stage:

His movements on stage can not be compared to Bono, both have a total different way of entertaining the crowd..Bono uses flirtation and his status to get the crowd going..he almost treats the crowd like a man trying to get a first date from a beautiful women. Giving it all, without loosing face or charm.

Chris martin is much more focused on physical energy, swirling around like a balerina. He doesn't mind when he looks like an idiot (he doesn't, but, nevertheless)...

Both singers know how to enjoy a crowd...and get a full stadium to rise up and join in the madness that is a concert.

I love both bands...and can't see how, without them, there would be any fun left in todays mainstream music business.
