Chris will definitely piss his pants when Radiohead play.

Shocked at Daft Punk winning in the dance cateogries for essentially GH tracks. Was really hoping for Sam Sparro and Kylie to take them out.

Coldplay, Radiohead and Robert Plant in line for Grammys

Coldplay: in line for an award alongside the likes of Radiohead and Robert Plant

Having already dominated the Oscar nominations, the British were set to take over America’s biggest music awards ceremony last night, with artists including Coldplay, Radiohead, Adele, and Robert Plant in line to collect trophies.

Britons made up a remarkable 13 of the 20 contenders in the main categories at last night’s Grammy Awards, held at the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.

Only once before in the Grammys' 51-year history have Britons played such a prominent role: that was 1986, when UK acts managed 10 nominations, including Sting, Phil Collins, and Dire Straits.

Scheduled to make a rare awards-show appearance last night was Radiohead, which earned five nominations for its highly-lauded In Rainbows album, sold to the public via an unorthodox (and, some have argued, unsuccessful) "honor box" system, where fans paid what they thought the album was worth. Radiohead was expected to perform the song 15 Step during the three-hour Grammys ceremony, with backing from the University of Southern California’s marching band.

“It's something we've been wanting to do with this song for a long time,” Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead’s guitarist and a BBC composer-in-residence, told the Los Angeles Times during rehearsals.

The Grammy nominations - which follow the five gongs won last year by Amy Winehouse - reflect the commercial success of UK artists during 2008, when Coldplay sold 6.6 million copies of its album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. Other big sellers have included the Scottish/Geordie/Australian hard rock outfit AC/DC, the Welsh singer-songwriter Duffy, and the X Factor winner Leona Lewis.

In a sign of the massive upheaval within the record business since the introduction of the iPod and iTunes, the record label with the most British nominees is not a big company, such as EMI, but a small independent outfit named XL Recordings.

Its artists include Adele and MIA, and the label was also chosen by Radiohead’s to release In Rainbows on CD.

In the Album of the Year category, Coldplay will battle Radiohead, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (Raising Sand), Ne-You (Year of the Gentlemen), and the New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne (Tha Carter III: The Rebirth).

The awards predictions website Gold Derby was last night tipping a win for Plant and Krauss, with Coldplay taking Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It concluded that Radiohead had been nominated “as a matter of conscience” and had no hope of actually winning.

Award winners and their entourages hoping for the lavish post-Grammy celebrations of previous years might be disappointed.

With the music industry facing the cataclysmic forces of both the internet and the recession, after-show parties have been scaled back or called off. Since the turn of the millennium, overall album sales in the US have crashed by 33 per cent.

A total of 110 categories make up the Grammy awards - among them country, pop, reggae, bluegrass, polka, blues and spoken word (nominees in the latter category include Al Gore, for the CD of An Inconvenient Truth) - with all but a dozen of them handed out before the main event begins at 5pm, local time.

The ceremony, which has long suffered falling television ratings and is considered an anachronism by some critics, is broadcast live at 8pm in New York and on a three-hour delay on the West Coast, so that it also airs at 8pm.
