I'm no music snob, so I don't think so at all.

What do you think?

I squeed just watching Gary Barlow sing with them on You Tube, so no!

So you don't think it's a bad thing for them to have become more pop, but do you think they're now a pop band or not?

What is a Pop Band?

One of the reasons why I love Coldplay is that they just so don't care, they like what the like no matter in what box other people want to put that.

P.

Yeah, I think the beauty of Coldplay is that they don't fit in to one box - 42 is not a pop song, Strawberry Swing is not a rock song.

Rock bands don't wear stage costumes, pop bands do not dabble with Delacroix.

Viva la vida, vive la difference!

They're popular indeed, they're probably today's biggest band in the world, especially since Viva la vida came out. I think it kinda started with X&Y too. It's not a bad thing.. but people could take it the wrong way.. Being pop isn't flattering somehow, as it may be associated with pop-rock cheesy music bands.

I don't mind them being called a popular soft rock, indie, whatever band, as long as they're not being called a pop gay band.. :)

Further boggling - what defines a pop band?

I don't think it's bad to be called a Pop Band...look at Take That - they are pure pop but they make brillant brillant pop songs...

P.

I don't think it's such a bad thing either. Take that is a good example.

But Mika's pop too, does he make good music ?

(okay, he's not a band. I was just looking for an excuse to diss him.. :P)

Fascinating answers, thanks guys! I really would appreciate more opinions and input here, and look forward to what comes up. As I've already written, I'll save my own opinion for later.

But what does make a pop band? A great question, and I'm sure there's no definitive answer. I feel myself that the band's progression over the last four albums has been Indie>Indie Rock>Stadium Rock>Pop/Rock, and that now they're very close to being the purest form of a rock/pop band (not group!)

No bad thing in my book.

well, but this is what it always comes down to ...good music...no matter if pop, rock, hip hop or whatever...

I liste to all kind of music as long as I like it...

^ Great point, and I'm the same as you. Postcards From Far Away (wake up Lore haha) is a very beautiful classical piece, and then we have everything from Lost with Jay-Z (with added rap) to ambient, abstract pieces such as Poppyfields.

Are Coldplay perhaps not only a pop band now, but in fact actually redefining the boundaries of pop music itself? I think that's what i'm trying to drive at, and why I made this thread.

True ! any kind is fine to me as long as it is good indeed. Coldplay proved it already, with ballads, rock, pop and even country.. etc.

I said it, and will repeat myself, pop as in popular is fine to me and that's the meaning I'd give it. But when people refers to them as pop to say they're a shitty band, there I have a problem. It just depends on what people mean when they think Pop.

:)

Yeah its Pop/Rock really, I don't mind, but I hope they have ore guitar based songs now, which classifies as rock, not that I dont like it but Coldplay should always change and ot make the same records

i think that coldplay partially are, and partially aren't.

for one, they're not like any other pop bands. their music is still alternative/rock.

but i think the thing is, when viva la vida came out, it was suddenly 'cool' to like coldplay. for some reason now more than ever.

so i think those people who just like viva la vida because everyone else likes it are not real 'fans', they're just, asses. :dozey:.

so those kind've people have made coldplay seem like pop, but i don't think they are.

Coldplay are unique. That's the only label they need!!:smug:

+1

That's also why their music is often called 'alternativ rock' cause it's a little mix of everything...and that's why I love them so much, every song is a new universe ^^

I LIKE this very much!!well said!

I like they are openmined for all kinds of music. So they're not rock OR pop band. They are rock AND pop AND MUCH MORE:D and they are making such INCREDIBLE MUSIC :heart::heart:

A nice way to put it Mark, but there are thousands of pop and rock acts that are unique, that wasn't the question I posed. That's a bit like saying that cornflakes are 'special' when asked whether or not it's a breakfast cereal.

Thanks for the replies everyone! It's interesting that the 'not a pop act' votes are in the lead. I'll post some reasons why I think they've become so later on.

I don't really know if they are a pop band... but whatever they are tagged, I really love the music so it's ok :D

  • Author

Me too Lore, but out of interest do you think they've become more 'pop', especially recently?

yeah, compared to parachutes, Viva la Vida is more pop... it's not like they are a pop band, but still they have a couple of "pop" songs
