Iron Maiden won because they had the entire Metal fan-base doing a Belle & Sebastian and voting for Iron Maiden to win, they had metal magazines supporting the cause.

 

Elbow won best band because people have finally opened their eyes and ears to the band after toiling the past 15 or so years, and they deserved it, and hopefully it will lead them onto greater things, although topping The seldom seen kid will be hard to do.

I had never heard of Elbow before. I went to Youtube and listened to some of their stuff....and I like them. :) Not as much as Coldplay, of course, but they're alright!
