I'm afraid.....

...don't really know where to talk about it, but coldplaying is a good outlet.

Found out today that a family member close to me is anorexic. Was just doing some research on it....and it really scares me. And I don't know what to think.

The internet can be great, but when it comes to medical stuff it's sometimes best not to research too much, otherwise you're mind will explode and you'll end up scaring yourself unneccesarily. I've no experience of dealing with anorexia, but I'd imagine that it's best for you to talk to the family member and deal with it head on. Make sure they've seen a doctor. Seek professional help. Keep an eye on them, be there for them. And remember, it's not the end of the world - loads of people with eating disorders learn to get through them and go on to live healthy lives :)

Yeah, I"m not sure the severity of it or anything. I didn't really ask for many details...and its just something I don't really know much about.

Thanks for the kind words though.

Anorexics and those with other eating disorders can keep their conditions hidden sometimes for years, so if it's come to your attention I'm afraid there's a chance it may already be pretty serious. I agree that the internet can sometimes scare when you look up these things (aka finding out the stuff the doctor kept from you) but in this case you're not the patient, so I say you can't have enough information in order to try to do what you can to help.

Hopefully someone on here who's beaten the illness will get in touch privately with some advice. If not I'd recommend joining a medical forum, there are some fantastic ones about.

My friend was anorexic, she got over it though, She was off school for over a year, it was terrible,

Yeah, Im not sure the full exent of it.

Just where there is the whole physciological part to it.....its not just something you can take a couple pills and make it go away.

Yeah you are right, I guess the best thing you can do is make him/her feel you are gonna be there supporting him/her instead of judging.... by what you said I know you are not judging him/her but he/she might be feeling like that you know.

I'm sorry to hear that Briggins :\

One of my old classmates had anorexia and it got quite bad but she's doing fine now..

It will take a lot of time to recover but at least you all know about it now and that makes a huge difference already.

uggg

Found out today a family member might have cancer. :(

So much bad news on that side of the family lately.

Sorry to hear about that. I feel for you :(

There are people I know that have dealt with anorexia and one of the best ways to help is just to be there for them as support. Don't really try to press on about the subject, but wait until they decide to talk about it.

I hope your uncle will be okay too with his situation.

Maybe I can help. Well help you understand. I can't believe I'm going to say this but first of all please understand that it's not something we're proud of. In fact we are embarressed by it, that's why we try to hide our disorder but anyway I'm anorexic and I don't know but yeah I swore I would never tell anyone on here because I didn't want to embarress myself or be judged but if you want to ask me any questions or anything just message me.

Genuinely sorry about your family member mate.

Be there for her however you can be, and remember, these problems don't fix themselves over night. They take months and years of hard work, on everyones part.

:(

My heart goes out to you Brigs, hopefully the cancer is treatable and doesn't spread and hopefully your family member with anoremic gets better as well.

Ouch, man. I've known people who are anorexic, and my friend has a family member who has cancer, and I've gotta say, it's going to be a long, hard road ahead of you.

The best thing for the person who is anorexic is to NOT GET ANGRY at them. Let them know that you're there for them, and you should insist on medical help or therapy. Most anorexic people only really open up at a pretty late stage. And you have to remember that anorexia nervosa is REALLY a nervous disorder. It's a sickness, and fixing it isn't going to be easy. The best thing to do is get a qualified specialist and always be ready to support them in every way.

Good luck with your friend, man. Get them help, and stay with them, and they'll probably be able to get over it.
