Australia's Herald Sun talks to Chris Martin

Featured Replies

COLDPLAY'S Chris Martin has laughed off a personal slur by one of the world's most sanctimonious singers - Bon

The U2 singer playfully called Martin a "w--ker,'' a "completely dysfunctional character'' and a "cretin'' on live UK radio last week, as well as a "great melodist.''

"I always thought he felt that way,'' Martin joked.

"I think it's great that we're arch enemies,'' Martin said. "That's a joke too.''

Martin has long used U2 as the benchmark for Coldplay, with U2 saying Martin's band also keep them on their toes.

The mutual lovefest continues: Coldplay are now playing U2's new single Magnificent just before they come on stage "as a mark of respect.''

"We respect any musician,'' Martin said, ``particularly ones who've kept going and not changed line up and have always been good.

"The difficulty of the whole U2 thing is we're only on our fourth record. We're competing with people on their fifth records. We're just coming up to where people were making (the Beatles') Revolver or (U2's) The Joshua Tree. We're at a very different stage.''

Martin is one of the most self-critical million-selling rock stars alive, regularly slating Coldplay before their detractors have a chance to.

"Even in Melbourne there's probably a hundred better singers than me and a hundred better drummers than Will (Champion), but we have a particular chemistry none of us can explain,'' Martin said.

"one of us are ever going to be virtuoso players who can wow people with technique.''

Martin recently said hearing Bruce Springsteen made him feel like his band were "s--t''.

"I know we're not s--t.'' Martin clarified. "We want to be like Hussain Bolt, we don't want to be the guy who came fifth. It's not enough to get into the Olympic finals, you've got to win it.

"We're on our fourth album, we're doing about as well as you can ask to do, but there's a blessing and a curse to being in a band in 2009. The curse is there's so many things that have gone before you it's difficult to be original and also you're competing against all those things in history from Beethoven to Sigur Ros to Gabriella Cilmi.

"The blessing is you have all this stuff to learn from and draw from.''

The band are already working on the follow-up to last year's Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, the highest-selling album in the world for 2008.

"We've always got to improve, that's very important,'' Martin said.

"We try to only listen to things that are terrifyingly good. I think that's the way you should operate, you should always assume there's someone about to be better than you so you keep working hard.''

Martin has also written the comeback single for ex-girlfriend Natalie Imbruglia; the singer has pushed the release of her new album back to May to include the track.

"A bit annoyingly we've given her the best Coldplay song of all time, but because we're off-cycle we can't do it ourselves,'' Martin said.

"Half of me wishes we still had it. But she sounds f---ing brilliant on it. I think she has a very unique talent and an incredibly unique voice.''

Coldplay are planning to release a free live album later this year ("tickets are expensive, especially in a recession. We're playing huge places, we thought it'd be cool to do something like that'') and will open Sydney's Sound Relief concert on March 14 with a full band, as opposed to their planned acoustic set.

"We're trying to make it extra good,'' Martin said. "It's going to be a great day.''

Gabriella Cilmi gets a mention?

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa- *explodes*

  • Author

There's NOTHING sweet about her! :o

great article thanks :D

although I really wish that one day Chris would stop being so polite and just tell off the person who is dissing him (Bono, Liam Gallagher etc)

  • Author

Well I guess he knows Bono was kidding. ;)

Liam, however, is not

but we have a particular chemistry none of us can explain,'' Martin said.

I can explain :sneaky:

Martin has also written the comeback single for ex-girlfriend Natalie Imbruglia

She is not his ex!

There's NOTHING sweet about her! :o

Or her brain-killing ear-damaging single. My ears, they still remember the pain and the blood when her single was being played over and OVER again.

Nice article! :D

*Ignores the Gabriella Cilmi mention!*

Very nice article! Chris, as always, is showing he is way above any negative comments about him or the band...They are at the top of the world and they do not need to shout it ;)

I agree - it's good that he never retaliates with insults. If he did the press would just turn it into another big story and make it into a 'ongoing feud'. They're successful enough to that they can let their album sales do the talking!!

Martin has also written the comeback single for ex-girlfriend Natalie Imbruglia Please tell me that is not true -

It's true :p (Look how they shine for youhou!, sorry I had too :embarassed:)

It could be a nice song, you never know.. At least Chris likes it very very much

Martin has also written the comeback single for ex-girlfriend Natalie Imbruglia Please tell me that is not true -

True about the song.

Not true about the ex.

Erm, no it's not. He invited her to one of their concerts once and she turned him down

COLDPLAY lead singer Chris Martin celebrated his 32nd birthday at inner-city hot spots on Monday night.

But so much for the hard-living rock'n'roll lifestyle.

The British rock star reportedly left nightclub The Gin Palace before midnight "sober, on foot and heading back to his hotel".

It was Martin's father who was was the last man standing, having stayed on at the upmarket bar after his famous son left.

"My dad is more of a rock star than me," Martin said yesterday.

"He embraces the lifestyle."

The low-key celebrations started at top tapas CBD restaurant MoVida, where Martin booked a table for four.

The Coldplay crooner was accompanied by his manager, father and one other guest, and arrived around 7pm.

But it wasn't the champagne-soaked dinner one might expect from your average rock god.

Instead, Martin was seen sinking a couple of quiet beers with his dad and talking with guests in the restaurant.

"He was a lovely bloke, he had time for everyone," a MoVida patron said.

"He said he was loving the restaurant, having a good time in Melbourne and that he was celebrating his birthday."

The small entourage later moved to The Gin Palace, where they had "a quiet sitdown" over cocktails.

The father of two did nothing to dispel his reportedly quiet lifestyle with actor wife Gwyneth Paltrow when he left the party early, while his dad stayed out until 2am.

"They were having a little party all night and sitting around having a few drinks," a manager at the bar said.

Coldplay performed the first of three shows at Rod Laver Arena last night.

Awww, Chris is so nice :nice:

"accompanied by his manager, father and one other guest" --> Phil??

How suitable!

probably. and aww chris is so down to earth! sounds like loads of fun.

and great article! yes, i'm ignoring the gabriella climi mention also. :smug:

Nice interview. :nice: I especially like the part when he says:

"Even in Melbourne there's probably a hundred better singers than me and a hundred better drummers than Will (Champion), but we have a particular chemistry none of us can explain,'' Martin said.

 It's funny because today I've been thinking about how different the boys are, but they have this special friendship that keeps them together. :nice:

I do not hope the song to Natalie Imbruglia is as good as Chris says. I'd be gutted that they gave it away then.

Why does everyone seem to have something against Gabriella Cilmi?

"one of us are ever going to be virtuoso players who can wow people with technique.''

You guys WOW :o us with your All Around Awesome~ness everyday! Keep doing whatever you are doing because we love it!!!:D

A new article suggests that Chris will be spending his belated birthday with Natalie Imbruglia, she is rumoured to be attending a party with the Neighbours cast - why is she poppog up everywhere lately - its concerning me
